I think STL, DAL, and PHI are close together in terms of GM strategy. Great teams on paper that fall far short. Fired coaches but holding off further changes depending on if they can get into the playoffs.
PHI is out of the playoff race because of key goalie injuries.
STL and DAL are precariously close to switching to a retool/rebuild mindset, where they give up on the current roster and make trades that sacrifice the present for future success.
I remember when ROR's contract was ridiculous. It is excellent value now, but he is easily traded because of age. All players peak and then decline with age. There's little point in keeping ROR if they aren't making the playoffs with him.

Retained salary or buyouts are fast becoming rare.
Even with that, this dream roster is $2 million over the cap.
Calgary could do one big move before the playoffs, but will Treliving dare jeopardize resigning his young stars?
This roster is why playoff rentals are a thing, lower price and lower cap and doesn't ruin signing current players.

Teams will take him if they can be coaxed w a player of Johnssons or Bracco’s caliber.

I don't know what Carolina wants tbh, I just don't think they're interested right now.
They have a new owner who can lift the team budget for the first time.
They have signed new important long term contracts.
They have lots of good prospects with the Checkers.
They could buyout / LTIR retire Jordan Staal.
They are looking at losing Ferland and Adam Fox (NCAA unsigned)
They're coming up on a clear fork in the road where decisions must be made, but they've chosen to ignore Toronto so far while they wait and see.
Maybe they are willing to take on Nylander this season, but are just waiting until the last possible moment to minimize the cash price. That'd be cool and help explain Dubas' confidence to get Muzzin and sign Matthews.

Leafs cap troubles fixed
Good attempt, just try to stick with the teams that have (a) the most cap room, and (b) are the furthest away from being Cup contenders
OTT / PHI / MTL / VAN / NYI / COL / NJD / CAR have the most cap space
from those
OTT / PHI / NJD
are the furthest from the playoffs
If you don't trade Zaitsev now, he can block trades to 10 teams (eg: those with $6 million or less of cap space this year) and he is under contract until age 32.
NJD are our best hope. We can bundle an overpayment to dump Zaitsev as part of a deal to maybe get Vatanen or Severson, and stay near our current salary.

Testing the offer sheet
Realistically a 1st + prospect might be Kapanen's trade value, but a high-mid round pick and not a late round pick from Calgary.
Not worried at all about an offer sheet, more like the cost to buyout Zaitsev hanging around for most of Matthews' contract.

That's the same as Edmonton buying Kris Russell. Don't be like Edmonton
The alternative is buying Robert Bortuzzo as the new Ron Hainsey.
If they're cheap and worthy of a roster spot, it's going to cost assets in a trade. The clock is ticking fast on Matthews now

Compete for the cup
This looks a little better if you consider Sandin and Liljegren playing on the Leafs before next year's playoffs. So without any new pieces, we should be better even if we lose Nylander from the roster.
After that we can plan on having more cap room and filling in holes from the UFA market.
But I would feel much more positive if we added an established RD, instead of another LD.
After waiting out Marleau+Clarkson's ghost, Zaitsev is the only one that doesn't fit, and one mistake shouldn't sink a roster.
The worry is do we have the depth to go multiple playoff rounds, and it might be 2 years before we can start filling in those holes.

Just looked at the standings, there's no teams with cheap RHD that would trade AND are clearly out of the playoffs.
It's going to be super expensive, but the Leafs need to get rid of Zaitsev before his NTC starts.
CAR is not interested
DAL, STL, VAN won't trade if it means they miss the playoffs
Everyone else has their own cap problems
I'd say the best hope is NJ and somebody like Damon Severson.

Next year
If Dallas falls out of the playoff race before the deadline:
- They can give us Klingberg, a RHD from the few in our price range
- They can take Zaitsev in exchange for overpayment in the trade. Likely Liljegren +
- it's a modest but important upgrade today, and it eliminates a future cap problem
We can't delay until 2021 to upgrade our top D to withstand playoff hockey. We have 6 playoffs with Matthews locked up, these are expensive years to waste.
This is also the last playoffs we'll have Nylander
edit: checked the standings, no way DAL trades now. Maybe Severson from NJ but it's a longshot for Dubas to get any RHD or trade Zaitsev right now

This season, you can add KK and AJ to that list of young players. If he's willing to split it up, then Nylander might make more sense for them. Im looking at it from a perspective where they keep all the young kids together!

Trading Kadri isn't even an option. He took a discount to buy his NMC.
So Dubas is a liar, big deal. He is a GM doing what's best for the team

They would want him, that's fine. They would just have to trade with the Leafs to get him and the price would certainly be more than a 2nd round pick. There's extra cap space over the summer when this would likely happen.

I'm not worried about that, because I never see offer sheets for anything but top tier players. It's too easy to match + trade a player with no No-Trade-Clause.
The players would likely choose not to sign an offer sheet, build up some stats playing on a championship team, and then collect their Stanley Cup bonuses at free agency
We will have to shed Nylander to open up some cap space for our blueline though. He's not good enough to be a Top 3 forward on the team, and he's too expensive to be #4

That's a bit too much to comprehend
We have $7.6 of cap space left for next season, +$3 cap inflation, minus bonuses.
4 UFAs, 4 RFAs other than Marner
Even if we're dropping Gardiner's $4 and Zaitsev's $4.5 at no additional cost, those savings would need to be spent on replacement D

If you want to evaluate this deal, you must consider the lower cap hit of a 5 year deal.
To get our value, we'll need to deploy the rest of our cap space and win the cup. Everything is worth it then.
We'll be able to attract so many free agents at discounted prices that we can get through a 3 year period of no picks and prospects in the pipeline.
No one expected Tavares to be as impactful as he has been this season. Heck, even adding Muzzin has people thinking the Leafs are a whole new beast.
I really hope we buy another RHD for this playoffs, so long as we keep don't touch the top player at any role -- because it can only be a caliber of player with an affordable cap hit until summer 2020.

Suck on that Arizona. If there's an offer sheet now, you can only dream that it is Matthews buying the Coyotes as he is now personally wealthier than Barroway and the Coyotes combined
As for the price, it is what it is. 5 years = 1 year of UFA.
We better be getting the most out of our other assets inside this window. No cup is a failure, 1 is expected, 2 will be great.

Isn't Colorado going to try and add before the trade deadline as well?
They are in the last playoff spot of a weak west. A minor addition now, especially from one of the competing bubble teams, can get MacKinnon some playoff experience
Maybe trade Jost because he's regressed and the shine is off, but he's still young enough a rebuilding team would take a chance on him. Even if he gets back in he'll have to play wing instead of the center his game is suited to. Bring in a young scoring winger instead, or some 25 year old 2nd pairing D to strengthen the backend
Anything can happen once you get in
Even if you are guaranteed to lose in the first round, you still have the #1 overall from Ottawa.

5 Years for Matthews 6 for Marner
Interesting and fair breakdown.
It all feels premature, and specifically I don't think there is any contract negotiation in the month before the trade deadline.
Dubas can sell the agents on Matthews becoming the "face of the NHL" by asking the media to put that out there.
Agents can stoke the flames by giving scoops to the media that the price has gone up.
If a deal was close, it'd be signed before Dubas set off the trade deadline frenzy.
The one thing Dubas can do to lower the prices of Matthews and Marner is giving them a taste of something exclusive, playoff success.
TOR is rumored to be hunting for a top minute RHD alongside TBL, NYI, PIT, COL, VGK, (and EDM lol)
TBL, PIT, and VGK are serious buyers
This is going to be the most exciting trade deadline in a decade
