<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>thekiller93</b></div><div>the reason why is I don’t agree with klingberg thing because ppl forget if the leafs have the best offer for any trade for example and a team has to take back salary to make the trade work they will it’s how hockey always worked I get you gotta pay to retain but but it’s really not that much the leafs barley paid anything for hawks to retain on McCabe for 3 years 1 year of konecny won’t cost that much honestly I think the leafs paid a 5th to minny to retain on oreilly or was it another trade but either way you can’t deny three 1sts even if they took back klingberg is hilarious and no team would pay that</div></div>
The best thing TOR can hope for is for Klingberg to end up on LTIR and stay there for the rest of the season

While what you’re trying to say isn’t necessarily all wrong, there’s some next level context you need to be aware of:

1) the closer we get to the Trade Deadline, the more Cap Space Teams have and the more Teams willing to Retain or Take Cap Dumps there will be making it cheaper &amp; easier to dump and/or get retention on a player

2) the out of Pocket Expense to the Owners will be minimal at the Trade Deadline, because the Player they Retain on or Accept Dumped on them will have been paid like 80% of their Salary at that point as well as any Bonuses as well, so the out of pocket expense isn’t as large as say paying from now to the end of the season and again, there’s far fewer Teams willing to retain right now = today, so the compensation required is significantly higher, same goes for the off-season in comparison to the Trade Deadline, when most retention and cap dumps only go to the end of the season

3) aside from Cap Space and Money Out of Pocket, what’s even more important and valuable to Teams are Retention Slots. You’re only allowed to retain on 3 Players MAX and PHI is already retaining on Kevin Hayes this season, the next and the one after that, leaving just 2. If they were to retain on Konecny, that’d take up 1 this season and another next, leaving them with just 1 retention slot this year and next. They don’t want to do that, given they’re a rebuilding Team. They want to maximize their retention slots. They’re VERY valuable to a rebuilding Team

So ultimately, it depends on when this trade happens, how many teams they have to compete with that are willing to retain for compensation and whether using a retention spot makes sense and is worth the compensation in return

I’m not high on McCabe, personally I think he’s a very good shot blocker and he has some physicality, but otherwise he sucks. The only reason CHI got a 1st for him, is because of the $$$ amount and years/term they retaining on him. I think McCabe is a 5/6/7 D-Man. In fact, I’d have Zadorov at 2LD over McCabe in TOR all day long
