2018-9 Caps, $82M cap

He's not a top-6 player. He has yet to break 40 points despite being given plenty of chances, and is extremely injury-prone. Caps have plenty of forward prospects who are ready to step up, but no defensive prospects who are NHL-ready.

Cole is not the type of dman the Caps need. Keep Kempny, trade Burakovsky, and then there's enough cap space to bring up a couple more players to complete the roster.
Also, Boyd probably gets $800K or so.

Like the roster, but the Caps would have to give up more in that trade.

1. Grubi won't get that much in return.
2. Why not re-sign Beagle instead of bringing Fehr in?
3. That 3rd pair is pretty bad. Rather keep Orpik and trade Burakovsky.

His regular season numbers are fine. He doesn't produce offense, but his defense is solid. He is the Caps' best PKer. And he's 37, not 40. Siegenthaler and Lewington should be playing - in Hershey. They've done nothing to show that they're ready for the NHL.

Grubi is also slightly younger than Raanta and Talbot were at the time they were traded, and with similar stats. He has the 4th best save % of any NHL goalie with 20+ GP over the last 4 seasons. The Caps can get a better haul than what you're proposing.
And you never answered my question - why get rid of Orpik if you're not going to use the cap space?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capsin9</b></div><div>my question to you is how do you know they aren't better than orpik if you haven't seen the play nhl minutes?</div></div>
We've seen Bowey and Djoos in the NHL, and they weren't as good as Orpik. Siegenthaler and Lewington have not been as good as Djoos and Bowey in the AHL, so simple logic would tell you they aren't as good as Orpik at this point.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capsin9</b></div><div>caps fans drive me crazy with this grub thing
he is a nil backup goalie that has starter potential
to dump orpiks contract it would cost grub.......maybe bc and a prospect
main point being grub isn't holtby.......... he's 27-28 he's not young his value isn't the same as most examples you'll give me bc he's older and has never been more than a back in the nil</div></div>
Grubi started for the last quarter of the season - he has shown that he has starter ability. And he is 26 (27 in November) - same age as Schneider when he was traded to the Devils. Giving up anything more than a low-round pick or mid-level prospect to get Orpik's contract off the books is an idiotic idea, let alone Grubi.

Honest question: why dump Orpik if you're not going to use the cap space? At this point, none of the 4 defensive prospects you have up there are better than Orpik.

You are giving up a starting-quality goalie, 3rd line forward, 3rd pair D, and prospect for a 5th and moving up in the draft. Grubi alone would be worth that.

Caps need to get a lot more back in that Isles trade. And rather than signing Green, just re-sign Carlson.

Those two trades are awful. That puts a weak defensive group in front of a goalie who hasn't shown if he can take a full starter's load.

2018-9 Caps, $78M cap
I'm not talking about fitting Carlson just this year, but also in the future. Keep taking on big, longterm contracts and there won't be any space for the mid-range guys that are needed for depth. Plus, he's 28 - do you want to sign a $7M+ deal that will go until he's in his mid-30's?
This is also looking at the low end of the expected cap, and still leaving almost $3M. When we get the cap number in about a week, I'll probably make a new roster.

Definite no. That's way too much for Karlsson. If the Caps want another high paid dman, keep Carlson - he's better.

Have to give the Caps a lot more. Wilson has been a great fit on the top line, and Grubi is starter material who the Caps are already being asked about. That trade is closer to Grubi alone.

would Vegas do this?
No, Vegas won't do that. First, that's not nearly enough value for the dman currently leading them in TOI. Second, McPhee has said he's keeping his young dmen. Third, that still leaves them with just as much of a surplus in dmen.
If I were BMac, I'd look into getting Merrill. He should be cheap to acquire, has a low cap hit, and has been scratched for most of the games. Send down Ness and a forward, and there will be space after Niskanen returns.

3rd d pairing help (Vegas)
I would offer slightly more, maybe Stephenson instead of McGauley, to get Vegas to retain half of Merrill's salary.
I think Caps might be better just using Bowey on the 3rd pair, but that might require a coaching change.

Only changes I would make are swapping Connolly and Vrana, and keeping DSP up instead of Stephenson. Stephenson has shown that he's not a NHL player. DSP is still young enough to potentially develop into a useful player. Or could keep both in Hershey.

Only change I would make is Graovac over DSP. But 4th line does have a few options.
I'm just worried that they'll have Orpik on the 2nd pair and Chorney-Djoos/Bowey as the 3rd pair. Seems like Trotz is leaning that way.

I don't see Buffalo making that trade. Ovie is on the downside of his career, while Nylander is just about to head into his prime. And why would the Caps trade Samsonov?

Actually, Burakovsky is quite comparable to Reinhart. Reinhart had 47 points in 1360 minutes - 1 point every 28.9 minutes. Burakovsky had 35 points in 849 minutes - 1 point every 24.25 minutes. And that was while he was mainly on the 3rd line, only getting 93 minutes of PP time (both of those due to the strong Caps' roster, not a problem with Burakovsky) to Reinhart's 231 minutes. Burakovsky is only 1 year older - so how exactly are they not comparable?

I'm sorry, what? How?</div></div>
Kane is good, but he's been a distraction throughout his career. His deal also ends after this season, and I don't think the Caps could afford to extend him. Reinhart is also good, but isn't much better than Burakovsky. He put up more points, but it was in a top-6 slot with better linemates and 4 minutes more of ice time per game. The Caps would also lose one of their two PK centers and a top-4 defensive prospect. Not worth it.
The Arizona deal is even worse. Holtby is the best player in that deal, Wilson is a power forward developing a strong 2-way game, and Johansen is another top-4 defensive prospect. OEL is quite good and Reider shows potential, but Raanta and Schenn are easily replaceable. Having to keep part of Orpik's cap hit and lose a pick as well makes that an awful deal.
