Gibsons Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>You're selectively ignoring the fact that Gibson isn't outplaying other ANA goalies in the same period with a massive sample. So no NHL front office is stupid enough to think half a decade of play isn't indicative of what the player is. And what Gibson is showing to be is an overpaid average at best soon to be 31 year old goalie. No organization is giving anything more than a liability back to Verbeek. Hence why Gibson will be staying in Anaheim to "lead" Anaheim to another bottom five season like he has done for years now.</div></div>
I'm not ignoring that. I've addressed that.
Dostal is a quality goaltender. Just like Gibson, he'd be a highly desirable asset if he were made available. His numbers are not substantially better than Gibson's.
Cal Petersen put up better numbers than Jonathan Quick when they played in a tandem. Does that make Petersen a better goaltender than Quick?
A goaltender's play behind a poor team is not indicative of how well they'd play behind a good team. An average goaltender than plays average behind a bad team won't become a quality goaltender behind a good team. A good goaltender can play poorly behind a terrible team and still be a good goaltender behind a good team.

Gibsons Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>Gibson hasn't had an above average season since 2019. That's half a decade of mediocrity- not "several years." This season Dostal played nearly the same amount as Gibson, yet noticeable outperformed him.</div></div>
The Ducks have been absolutely terrible since 2019. That's no coincidence.
The Kings were terrible for 3 years while they were retooling. For each of those 3 years, Drew Doughty was "terrible," and "over the hill," and "one of the worst contracts in the NHL." This season he just finished arguably the single best season of his career.
Put a decent team in front of Gibson and he'll look every bit like the top quality goaltender he was pre-2019.

I don't think you're going to be able to pry Bourque out of Dallas for 1 year of Chychrun, even if Ottawa retains 50%.

Gibsons Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Byrr</b></div><div>The problem with the 'bad team' argument is that his backups are always playing better behind that same team.</div></div>
Not significantly. Last season, Gibson put up a .899 SV%, which is almost exactly league average. The median save percentage by teams last year was .8985. Dostal put up a .901 playing a backup role (i.e. easier starts). Keep in mind that Dostal is a highly regarded young goaltender that is expected to be a quality starter in the league.
I'm not saying that Gibson should be getting Vezina votes or anything, but he's definitely still a quality goaltender in the league. I'm a Kings fan that absolutely can't stand the Ducks, and I have no problem admitting that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>Weren't they shopping Gibson just last summer and that's when it got out that he won't accept a trade to any Canadian market? I would bet Verbeek would trade him for future considerations if he could. He just can't because NHL GMs likely universally view Gibson as a liability.</div></div>
No, it came out as a rumor last summer that Gibson had said that he would never play another game for the Ducks, and he had to come out and publicly deny that. The Ducks said they had no intention of trading him.
His numbers don't look good, but he has had one of the single worst teams in the league playing in front of him for the last several years.

The Ducks don't need the cap space, and I don't think they'll sell low on Gibson. He just had another season with poor numbers through very little fault of his own.
Unless someone gives up a pretty substantial haul for him, I think Gibson will be in Anaheim for at least another season.

Making tough choices for the future
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SpiderSpiderSpider28</b></div><div>Is Turcotte waiver eligible next season? Sort of the difference between agreeing with you or thinking that this is a significant overpay</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KINGS67</b></div><div>Hmmm. I don’t think so to be honest.</div></div>
Alex Turcotte is waiver eligible next season. Turcotte is also no longer an AHL player. He has been really good for the Kings while he's been healthy. The problem is that he can't stay healthy.
If he is healthy, he'll be in the NHL lineup, if he's not, he'll be on LTIR. There's no risk of losing him to waivers.
I don't think the Kings are looking to shop Turcotte right now. With Byfield's extension looming, I think they're looking for as many inexpensive skilled players as they can find for the bottom six. Thomas, Turcotte, and Laferriere will all be on the squad next season. Helenius and ****emo will get a good long look as well.

Getting creative and can Stamkos fix powerplay
The Kings can't afford another seven-figure, bottom-six forward.
They're already on the hook for Talbot's $1M bonus next season, and Byfield's carry over bonus to next season could be as high as $942,500. After factoring in Byfield's extension and the need for a starting goaltender, there's no room for someone like Smith at $2.5M. I don't think Grundstrom will be back, and I think even Lizotte is a question mark because his performance has earned him a raise.
We'll very likely see all of Alex Laferriere, Akil Thomas, and Alex Turcotte in the starting lineup next season. Guys like ****emo and Helenius will be given a long look as well.

Thinking outside the box
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hckeydude123</b></div><div>What if he signed something in the 7-8m range as an extension? Helly is probably going to win the Veznia this year and he signed his extension this year. Maybe the days of the monster contracts for goalies are after Bob signing his, since then you have Helly signing his 8m contract Sorokin signing a 8m contract and Vassy at 9.5m. So it wouldn't be crazy to think Igor could sign something around an 8m contract.</div></div>
6 out of the top 10 goaltenders in GAA this season had a cap hit of $2M or less. I wouldn't ever pay more than $6M for a goaltender.

Goalies have value when they provide significantly better performance than their cap hit. Bobrovsky has been one of the better goaltenders in the NHL recently, but no one is going to give up much in a trade for him because he makes $10M per season.
Shesterkin has one more year of a reasonable cap hit. After that, he's going to cost a LOT of money. More than Hellebuyck. I wouldn't give up significant assets for one season of affordable goaltending plus the right to give out a $9M+ goaltender extension.

It's not a question of price. He's not available.
If Chicago called up and said they'd be interested in swapping him for Bedard, then sure. Short of that, Byfield isn't going anywhere.

There's no way Byfield signs for that little either. You might be able to get him to extend for 1 year @ $5M, but only if it's with the promise of a long-term deal next summer.
Lizotte deserves a raise as well.

Which part? The trade value is fine I suppose, but I don't know why the Kings would be interested in that player. Also, why are you paying Berggren more than league minimum after he spent most of the season in the AHL?
I think the Kings would just keep Laferriere on the 3rd line, put Thomas on the 4th line, and trade Kaliyev for a draft pick.
Also, there's absolutely no way that Byfield signs that extension.

Contract comparison
I think Jack Hughes is probably the best example. He had a similar level of expectations, talent, and performance over his first couple seasons.
The main difference is that Hughes signed his extension before his breakout season while he still had a year remaining on his ELC. For that reason, he "only" got $8M. Had he waited for his ELC to expire, he would have had his breakout PPG season under his belt and would have cost $10M+.
Byfield's breakout season, while great, isn't as good as Hughes' was, so I don't think he'll get $10M+, but I do think he'll get more than $8M. If I had to guess, I'd say an 8 year extension would probably cost the Kings around $9M-$9.25M.

There's no way Byfield is signing that contract. A bridge for 3 years would cost around $6.5M. 8 years will cost $8.5M+.

As a Kings fan, I would do none of those trades.
Grundstrom's qualifying offer is $1.3M and an 8-year Byfield extension would cost more than that.
