In Order To Make It Past The First Round One Must Do This
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jassan28</b></div><div>Nope, not if you assume equal times spread out through lines by coach</div></div>
Well I'm gonna assume that that will never happen because it won't.
Auston Matthews is a generational superstar, he should probably play more than "equal time".
Wayne Simmonds should also never be in the top 6.

Although I like the optimism, there is no way you get Sandin, Liljegren, and Mikheyev for those contracts.
Engvall and Lyubushkin are also a little low.

Spreading the talent is one thing. Nylander on your 4th line is flatout dumb

There are definitely opportunities to mix and match Leafs lines.
I like these, but Nylander is just too good to not have in your top 6

An Expected Look
I definitely agree that Kase will get a look on the top 6.
I also agree that Spezza shouldn't automatically be a 4th line guy. His numbers and overall play were fantastic last year and a 3rd line role makes a lot of sense to me.
4th line is almost tougher because you are playing with a bunch of plugs... 3rd line with Kerf and Bunting or Ritchie sounds pretty sweet.

Suter could be an interesting one.
Need a better winger than Ritchie though.
I rather take that Ritchie and Getzlaf $ and put it towards Schwartz or Granlund.

NMC is weird, but the Wings have the "luxury" of not having to worry about cap hits right now. Maybe he should have got 1 million, but it doesn't really matter

Chicago Blackhawks signed Seth Jones (8 Years / $9,500,000 AAV)
1) Jones has a reputation for being an elite D-man... He is not.
2) He is overpaid and could be a boat anchor contract in 5-6 years.
3) He is still good and is still a top pairing D. A change of scenery will be huge for him.
4) Giving up Boqvist and all those picks is an astonomical price to pay... Odd that they didn't go all in for Hamilton instead and offer him 10x7

This is a fair deal.
Funny reading comments criticizing "not getting more FA years" or "Missing out on his prime 28-30"...
Gimme a break... You just signed an elite D-man for the next 6 years at a cap hit that is fair if not low.
Good deal

3. Leading a team that wasn't a contender at the time to the finals at age 20
4. Being a solid player under Rick Bowness's stupid system, and being asked to play a defensive role not an offensive one.
You get the point.</div></div>
It seems people lack this thing called foresight....
Heiskanen at 25-29 is gonna be better than how he is now and the cap will eventually go up again.
Lock him up for the prime of his career for a reasonable hit. Such a no brainer that this contract will age well.

Edmonton Oilers signed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (8 Years / $5,125,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MelonVK</b></div><div>It's so crazy to me how people go "cap hit is AMAZING, but term kinda WORRYING???" as implying you can just chose to go low on both. Clearly player and team have two parameters they go back and forth on - players wants as many years for as much money as possible (typically, especially closer to their 30's), and teams typically the opposite. You should evaluate term and cap hit together.
RNH is a good player. Not amazing, but really good. And I think for that, this is a good contract. For most competing teams you're willing to give up some length to reduce the cap hit. HOWEVER, in Edmonton's case I feel like this very much depends on the status of McDavid. If he's prepared to say an Oiler, this makes little sense. You already have a young superstar for enough years for this contract to hurt. If he's potentially looking to leave I think it's more reasonable to make a push for the now and take some damage later.</div></div>
Extremely well said.

This is a great deal for Edmonton.
Yes the term is long but he could have gotten close to 7mill.
I can live with 2 years of this deal being bad for saving cap now and getting a bargain for 4-5 years

One play in one game shouldn't be a determining factor in a player coming back or not.
Galch was hard working and produced at an ok clip. Would take him back on the cheap.
Same goes for Rittich, Foligno, etc.. If you can get them for cheap they are worth considering.

Everyone talking about the Edm trade and I get it, but why would ARZ do that deal?. Like the EDM trade is a no from Edm, but at least it includes Rielly.
The ARZ trade doesn't include any valuable pieces at all for Dvorak

He can handle a 4C role right?</div></div>
Fair enough. Bottom line was moving players like Mikheyev and Engvall for entry level or league min replacements.
Engvall could definitely play 4th line C. He actually filled in at 3C with the Leafs for a while. He's a weird player.. His speed is arguably elite, everything else kinda sucks. Good energy guy/ PK guy

Clear cap for Hamilton
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DFour34</b></div><div>I truly think imo micky is a better player than engvall so i think micky would stay and we need to trade engvall. I also don't think rielly stays if hamilton comes in. Also not sure if foligno would sign for that but it could happen. Just my thoughts. but good signings for goodrow and chucky. think we need someone else than rittich also.</div></div>
Yeah the point with Mikheyev and Engvall was to just get them off the cap (mostly) and replace with cheaper/more effective guys.
I tried to do it with keeping Rielly purposely because as much as I like Sandin, its 50/50 whether he is ready for a top 4 role. Might as well go for it with that beast D core.
I don't think the market for Foligno is big at all. Columbus could offer him a deal, but otherwise I don't see other NHL teams offering more than 2.5 for a soon to be 34 year old with declining production.
Rittich I could take or leave, but the budget for a goalie is probably around 1.5.
Thanks for commenting!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cakecakecake</b></div><div>Hyman at 5M is realistic but not for six years, that's gonna age worse than Lucic. Coleman is not a 5M player, never has been, and even if one gm thinks he is, Dubas isn't that gm.</div></div>
Look at the Charlie Coyle contract or the Brendan Gallagher deal.. Those are direct comparables and they are all the same age.
6 years is very realistic especially if the Leafs try to leverage years in exchange for a lower cap hit.
Coleman at 5M is an overpay, yes. Thats because it is free agency and the player goes to the highest bidder.
Coleman will get in that 4-5m range. I chose the high end, Nothing to freak out about.
He is solid middle six winger that just won a cup... Big market for guys like that.
