My Thoughts on the NYR Crunch
pass on strome, thanks tho. Lias andersson as a 2C. that's pretty funny. maybe if you're allowed to strap rockets to his skates that MIGHT work. at best hes a defensive 3rd line player w some playmaking ability.

they were high on him before this season. he's a prototypical 2C. at worst he'll be a 3C. he's a pretty safe player and that's really key at Center. not for sale rn

Varlamov is a very talented goalie, the concern is his hip problems. Mitch Korn and Piero Greco will take him back to his .920 + days combined with the solid defense of a trotz system, PDO is not a concern from a goaltending stand point. shooting percentage is the one I worry about. I also would not add Marner for anything more than 11 and ideally at 10.5

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>Oh, I agree with what you laid out. I just don't see any team giving him the Mathews contract, or anything close, really, on a 5yr term.
And I'm starting to think that this is what's possibly going on... Marner's camp thinks he's the best player on the team and he needs to be paid like it, which means AM money/contract or bust.
They're kinda coming off as being a bit delusional.</div></div>
I personally think he's the best forward on the team in totality, but a player like matthews whos scores 30-40 goals a season and is a true number 1 center is bound to get paid more. i think for the Islanders its worth giving hiim 10.5-11.5 million x 5 yrs, and trading Bailey and Leddy to recoup some of the assets lost and free up cap space for next years signings. I think anything above 9 frankly its worth it to move Marner for the leafs. the biggest mistake made by lil Dubi was not moving nylander when he had the chance. the next biggest mistake is that he's trying to build an offense only team; which will be great in the regular season, and continue to bow out early in the playoffs.

Replace Lou
A Cizikas is going to be the third line center, so really now they are looking for a 4th line center
B. hate to break it to you but until belmont is built, no UFA's are coming here.
C. he brought in the second best active coach in the league. there is no fuggin way in hell, Garth would have been able to convince Trotz to come here.
D. a Leddy trade for a top 6 wing is going to be stalled until Gardiner signs a deal, because the teams who lose out on him will be looking for leddy or equivelent in the trade market
E. Lou has turned the organizational culture around, which anyone who has ever been in the business world knows that is the foundation of success.
F. look at how disfunctional the leafs as an organization have become since lou left: infighting, Player/contracts disputes, lack of identity

i very much doubt anyone has offered 12.5 x 5 or even for 7. I would pontificate and say the most he's gotten offered is 11. if the leafs get up to 10.5, he'll probably take it. they probably aren't offering more than 9-9.5 on a 5 yr term

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>That makes sense for Marner, I guess. But I think it get's much more simple than that... Aho just signed a 8.5M aav for 5 years. Who is going to give Marner 11M aav for 5 years? I'd say its simple.. no one.
So, if this is all about the money and he has a 12M/7yr OS on the table then he should take it and run. My take, though, is that this isn't as simple as it being about money. Ego is playing a big part in this..</div></div>
i was simply pointing out the financial aspect of taking 11 for 5 even 10 for 5 vs taking 12.5 for 7. in the long run it means he will gross less income by taking a higher AAV longer term deal now. he's been convinced that he's worth Matthews money. I know if I think I'm worth 100,000 dollars a year, and I'm only getting offered 80,000 dollars a year, I'd start looking for other places to hire me for what I want and if my company wants to match that, then they can.

depends on how contentious the negotiation gets. at this point, based on he actually offers which is just shooting, no playmaking ability and very bad defense, he's not worth even 2 first. the highest I would go if I were the Islanders GM is
Leddy
Beau
Bellows or Ho-sang
3rd
for
Laine

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>linehan10</b></div><div>I totally understand that angle, but if the Isles really approached with 7 years and 12.5, i don't understand him saying no to that term. He becomes tied for the highest cap hit</div></div>
it's simple: if marner takes say 11 now for 5 years thats 55 million dollars. his next contract will be at 26-27 years old, with 3-4 prime years left in him, he could get a contract on the open market that is ~16 % of the cap (at signing) for 7 yrs. lets say the cap increases at a steady rate of 3 %. the season following the expiration of that 5 year deal the cap will be ~ 94.5 million. so his contract could be ~15.25 for 7 years.
in that scenario the career earnings would be <strong>161.75 million gross</strong>.
conversely if he signs a 7 year deal now at 12.5 (87.5 total), and he goes on the market with only 1-2 yrs of prime years left at 29, he's more likely to get a deal worth closer to 9% of the cap and only for 4 years, maybe 5. assuming the same growth rate of the cap, 3%, the cap would be 100.25 and say he gets that 5th year, his second contract is worth a total of ~45 million. in this scenario his career earnings is <strong>132.6 million gross.</strong>

what you consider "nothing" is subjective. what you really mean is, no body is throwing around trades that you see as fair value. the reason for that is because he's not a sure thing or a complete product like aho, marner and to a lesser extent Connor. at this point in time, I would give up more for Connor than I would for Laine.

there is no way I would mortgage the teams future on Laine and pay him that much on a bridge contract. bridge contracts are prove it contracts. right now laine is a fantastic shooter and terrible at everything else. if you're going to give him a bridge deal: 5.5 for 2 years, 6 for 3 years. and I would work out a trade not offer sheet him

if the value is there, ofcourse I would want my team to acquire him, he's a fantastic shooter and my team needs goal scorers. but the metrics on how bad he is at literally everything else can't be ignored. it's not that anyone want's to call him a one trick pony, its that the empirical evidence clearly shows that he is.
