Toews is too good to be the piece in a trade like this. As someone else said, Girard makes more sense in a Bennett swap.
That said, nothing Florida does makes sense so we counter with MacDermid + 5th for Barkov

I disagree here. Kerfoot would provide much needed center depth and would play a bigger role than Justus will this year.

TDL and Offseason 2023
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ML16</b></div><div>I postulate - however unlikely it is - that Drouin redeems himself in a contract year and becomes a worthwhile TDL asset at 50% retention, especially with his history with MacKinnon. I also postulate that Harris steps up after an encouraging first couple of games and becomes a young, viable, cheaper, 3rd pairing to let Byram take Girard’s spot on the top-4.
That’s a lot of IFs, but it would be a creative way to use Drouin, LHD prospect and expandable picks to fetch a defenseman under reasonable terms for the rebuild.</div></div>
If Drouin pops off and has a perfect season, he would be a great rental on the market. But that’s unlikely for the player Drouin has been in his career. And even if that happened, you’re not getting 4 years of Sam Girard for a rental. At best you’re looking at a pick or a prospect.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Koskinen_The_Great</b></div><div>So you're saying Edmundson would be a bottom pair guy on Colorado??! I agree. And isnt that an asset instead of Jack Johnson?
Calling Evans overpaid is just dumb. They gave away Poehling a legit throwaway 4th line center at 750k. Evans if he was overpaid would have been the throwaway to the Pens in the Petry deal</div></div>
Edmundson would be a bottom pair guy on most contending teams in the league, not just Colorado.
Not sure how the Pittsburgh trade is relevant. But Poehling sucks lol.
Example here though: Avs have Logan O’Connor as a 4th liner. Evans and LOC are different players, but overall they’re going to play similar roles on a team’s bottom 6. LOC is signed for $1.05M for the next 3 years. Similar age, same term as Evans. LOC is a valuable player today *because* he is so cheap. If he made $650K more, he would be a trade candidate.

Much needed cap space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Koskinen_The_Great</b></div><div>I didnt say they were more valuable but calling Edmundson a bottom pair guy when he's been paired on the top 2 pairs the last few years isnt correct. He had an unbelievable season with Petry in 2021 finishing 5th in the NHL in plus/minus and playing in every situation.
You are either not being truthful or you dont know the player well enough
Evans at worst is played as your 4th line center that can move up in the lineup. AT 1.7M with cost certainty for 3 years. You make it sound like he's not an everyday nhl'r. He is very valuable. That cost certainty adds to his play on the ice and makes him attractive to a team capped out that needs to shed a top9 player to fit in other top6 players. We've seen it before.
Is it a fair trade? Who knows. Fair trade is a fan made concept. Gms arent looking to deceive other GMs otherwise then they wouldnt do business together again. But it certainly gives Colorado flexibility in a tight market where they will have no choice but to shed a player like Girard next year to fit MacK.</div></div>
Edmundson would be a bottom pairing PK guy on every contending team (including Colorado). You can cite +/- from 2 years ago, but his on ice defensive impacts have been poor for most of his career. But yes he has played top 4 minutes before, absolutely true.
$1.7M for a replacement level 4th liner isn’t exactly great. If you’re a team trying to make smart moves to save cap, paying a guy like $700K more that what a comparable player would get in the market is not a recipe for success. Committing to 4th liners for long term at above market rates doesn’t give a team flexibility.

Might not be fair in your opinion but Edmundson and Evans are valuable members of the team, young, cheap and effective. I see Oilers fans trading for Evans on every ACGM because he's so valuable on a cap team.</div></div>
Edmundson is a bottom pairing guy on just about every team. Evans is a replacement level 4th liner (although he’s young so he may be able to put it together).
I’m not saying that there’s not value for Edmundson/Evans in the league. But that value is less than Girard and Compher.

I feel like I lost brain cells reading this thread.
Avs would decline this fairly quickly IMO. Both Colorado players are better than both of the proposed Montreal players by a fairly significant margin. If the Avs are looking to move on from Girard/Compher to save cap, they’d probably be looking at cheaper options than Edmundson and Evans.

Schmaltz from the desert
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyScotty</b></div><div>The Avs value Girard pretty highly so I don't think they would need to add in this scenario.
Bo Byram is great but he has an extremely high injury risk; Avs entire gameplan revolves around the defenseman activating and pushing play up to the forwards. The depth back there is necessary for a deep playoff run and is hard to find on the market.
If the Avs wanted a $5-6 million #2 Center then they would have pursued Trocheck, Copp, or Strome and not given up any assets for.
Playing MacDermid regularly makes us worse. Losing Girard makes us worse. Adding Schmaltz only marginally improves the forwards as the Avs see Newhook growing into that role and now would be blocked for 4 years.</div></div>
I’m probably the #1 Girard defender on Capfriendly so I’m right there with you. Problem the Avs are in now is that they are in a cap crunch with no 2C. If the trade is 1-1, that’s fine with me. But I imagine the Coyotes want futures.
In this scenario, MacDermid is 8th D. I’d call up MacDonald before letting MacDermid take a shift at defense. So maybe 9th D.
I disagree with you on Schmaltz being a marginal improvement at F. He’s a huge play driver. If Newhook continues to grow into that 2C role, Schmaltz can always move to RW (where he’s played a lot of his career). But at this point, I wouldn’t be ready to commit to Newhook at 2C

My thought on Newhook would be that he probably won’t be ready for 2C in time for the Avs current window. Losing him would suck, but having cost certainty at 2C would be nice.
I think Schmaltz could do well in the Avs top 6. Not sure what wingers he would get (maybe Landeskog for faceoff help), but the Avs have enough defensively responsible play drivers to help him with his 200 ft game.

Avs maybe Read Description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Danky</b></div><div>Lets look at something that dictates a good defensemen. No offense to Girard, I really do like him.
Girard career 340gp +9 or his first 155gp -3
Foote career 91gp +15
The Avs need a smart stay at home defensemen. Has a good shot, has good poke check, can stop you in your tracks. Has learned from Hedman and McDonagh for 2 years.
Foote was drafted 14th overall (by Yzerman who is responsible for Tampa success) . Girard 47th overall with injuries. Byram is going to take over 2nd line duties so no more 20 mins for Girard.
There was a famous defensemen that made his job look effort less and wasn't very quick either. His name was Lidstrom, meaning positioning beats everything. Not comparing them, wouldn't be fair and useless. Would also save them Avs money for the next couple years even after resigning him next year, which will be cheaper than Girards 5 mil. It would also be wise of the Avs to sign Byram before the end of next year if they can, before that AAV goes higher.
If Gaudreau didn't sign 8 for 10 aav, its evident its not about money. Almost gets a 1.5 mill raise from last contract and a better chance at a cup or cups.</div></div>
Girard is so significantly better than Foote. Your narrative here doesn’t make sense.
You act like Foote will develop into the same player as Girard. They’re the same age.
Foote has had the opportunity to learn from Hedman and McDonagh sure. Girard has played with Makar and Toews if you want to play that card.
This trade is brutal. Foote isn’t even an every night defenseman for the Lightning.
