Did I ever say Toews was the top offensive D-man?,.... nope, just comparing cap hits to what is brought on the ice, which is what you attempted to do with Klingberg to rationalize Barries worth. Are you somehow implying Barrie is worth $7M when comparing him to Klingberg?..... or wait... could it be Klingberg was drastically overpaid and not worth it?.... oh my, the horror!
and, you literally just shat on Chychrun because he doesn't score as much as Barrie? implying a defenseman who puts up more points is somehow worth more? Then back to Shattenkirk, 47 points in 85 playoff games... you know, when it actually matters, Barrie.... oh Barrie, 20 in 46, and only 6 in 20 games with Edmonton, playing with Drai and McD.... Barrie is a joke, defending him based on points is akin to leafs fans thinking they're winning the cup with $35M tied up in 3 players.
No wonder everyone laughs at Edmonton's fan base, just as delusional as the leafs ones. lol</div></div>
At this point, it appears there is nothing to be gained by pointing out the holes in your latest statement; you have it in your mind that you are correct and you're obviously unwilling to consider you may not be.

We can all cherry pick contracts to make a point.
I agree the cap will go up, but Mcleod and especially Bouchards salary will outgrow the cap in the immediate future.
Barrie disappears in the playoffs, he's not a guy you can win with, just like Mike Green, after being swept by Colorado, they need defensive depth to make the difference and be a legit contender, not another guy who contributes half his assists as secondary assists, or half his points come on the PP.
To take the next step, Edmonton needs a shutdown guy who can contribute 20 points more than they need Barrie throwing up 20 secondary assists a season.</div></div>
Its been six years since Shattenkirk produced offense like Barrie has. Toews is far from the top offensive d-man in Colorado, Barrie was the top guy in Edmonton when he signed his contract, and his production was right there with Bouchard's last season. Chychrun had one NHL season in which he scored anywhere near the level that Barrie has scored at through his career.
Kilingberg signed his contract this past summer, his career numbers closely resemble Barrie's, and they have played the same roles through most of their respective careers. If you're going to cherry pick, do a better job of it.

The overpay for Foegele and the trade off of Hoffman for Barrie clears cap room, which Edmonton desperately needs more than Barrie
You are right though, Hoffman is not what the Oilers need, but what they do need is to ship out Barrie to desperately for cap room, as Bouchard is coming due for a contract, and paying a non-defensively minded 3rd pairing RD $4.5M next season is going to be rough on top of Bouchard getting a hefty pay raise.</div></div>
The Anaheim Ducks are paying John Klingberg $7M to do what Tyson Barrie does in Edmonton for $4.5M. Barrie's contract represents pretty good value. The cap situation in Edmonton is not ideal, but it's not desperate either. It will be pretty tough to manage as things are right now, but there will be some relief when contracts are due to Bouchard, McLeod et al. The salary cap will go up a bit, and room will come in the form of reduced dead cap space, the end of Milan Lucic's current contract, and the expiration of contracts for a number of depth players. Players like Warren Foegele and Tyson Barrie will have one season left on their contracts, making them easier to move as well.

That Edmonton trade... Yeesh. Maybe, if training camp performances justify it, trading Foegele for late 2nd or a 3rd round draft pick makes sense. But:
Hoffman = left-handed, one-dimensional forward. Finished last season with 35 pts and -24. Will be 5-years past his prime come November 24, and is quite obviously in decline.
Barrie = offensive RHD, with near-elite power play driving ability. Finished last season at 41 pts and +3. Celebrated his 31st birthday on July 26, and is currently about 2 years past the age considered prime for NHL defensemen. Despite reduced playing time, his production has remained consistent with his career averages. That suggests he is not yet in decline.
The Oilers have a plethora of LH forwards, their top 6 forwards are very strong and the team has been among the NHL's most offensively productive. Hoffman doesn't kill penalties or take face-offs, and he would not be part of the 1PP. He offers Edmonton nothing they don't already have, and nothing that they might still need. Tyson Barrie happens to be a RHD, a highly valued commodity in today's NHL. Pair him with a defensively sound partner and his team will own shot shares and outscore the opposition while he is on the ice. Don't believe me, well then take a look at the numbers Barrie put up while paired with Kulak in a waning days of last season and through Edmonton's playoff run.
Adding the 2024 58-64 overall draft pick is probably a bit rich for Warren Foegele, but no so rich that it makes up the difference between Mike Hoffman and Tyson Barrie. No, I see no logic to support Hoffman for Barrie.

My take Flames offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>So did he do the right thing, or should they have started a rebuild instead?</div></div>
From the outside, looking in:
1. The drama associated with Gaudreau and Tkachuk is rapidly dissipating;
2. Markstrom should be extremely motivated after the way the recent playoffs ended for Calgary;
3. The addition of Weegar should make an already very good Flames defense even better;
4. Weegar's presence also opens to possibility that Treliving might improve his group of forwards by trading one of his defensemen;
5. The contract Huberdeau signed suggests to me that the Flames are serious about contending for the Stanley Cup now;
6. Cole Schwindt is a very, very good prospect who will challenge for a spot on the NHL club. He looks like he's going to be a solid NHL player sooner rather than later;
7. Signing Khadri strengthens the Flames depth at centre, and on both special teams, and underscores that win-now approach; and,
8. Lucic will play out his contract and then the Flames have extra cap space to make more positive moves next summer.
It all looks pretty good to me. I think Treliving made off like a bandit, despite the turmoil this summer.

At this point, I think Shore should be reassigned so that one of the prospects can get a couple games to start the season. Once that's been accomplished, said prospect can go to Bakersfield and SHore can return to Edmonton. Of course, we've yet to see how camp unfolds, so my point of view is uninformed right now.

Another Former Leaf
Tyson Barrie gets a lot of hate from fans, usually those who choose not to look a bit deeper than opinions based on his one season in Toronto. Its far too easy to forget that he led all NHL defensemen in scoring just two season ago, and has quarterbacked one of the best power play units in the league. Over their respective careers the role Barrie has played and the stats he's produced are comparable to John Klingberg, who just signed a $7M contract in Anaheim. Yet many people scoff at Barrie's $4.5M AAV. Strange.
Barrie ended last season playing 3rd pairing in Edmonton because Ceci proved effective with Nurse as the shut-down pairing, and Bouchard developed much faster than anticipated. The only reasons his name is mentioned in the rumor mill are the emergence of Evan Bouchard and the cap constraints the Oilers find themselves in. Its possible, but improbable, that those circumstances might motivate Ken Holland to undersell Barrie. The value for the Oilers in the proposed trade arises from the salary retention, and Zaitsev being right handed and having some experience. Without the salary retention the deal makes little sense for Edmonton. Even with salary retention, I don't think this is a deal that works out well for Edmonton.

I agree. Entwistle is a solid young player who has an opportunity to develop with a rebuilding team. He's likely going to play a more prominent role as a Hawk than he will as an Oiler. Ceci has worked out very well in Edmonton because of the manner in which he's been deployed; his contract is looking like a very fair deal right now. The situation in Chicago is much different, and its likely Ceci would not provide the same kind of value there. I would not be happy if this trade occurred, particularly if Holland sent Petrov away as well.

Regardless of what you think his value is, compared to Kulak and Murray, Petterson's AAV is simply too much for the Oilers to take on. What's more, RW will be the area of greatest need in Edmonton, if Holland trades away Puljujarvi.

While I am a big supporter of ensuring young players earn their opportunities, unless Holland is able to move out salary between now and then, cap and asset management considerations suggest Holloway, Broberg, and Samorukov should all be on the opening night roster.

Once again, you are placing a great deal of faith in the Sportsnet crew. That drivel was dreamed up by Mark Spector, a notoriously poor source, on June 30. On July 26 Jesse Puljujarvi signed with the Oilers. The money and term are actually quite fair for both the player and the team. The worst case scenario is that Puljujarvi will remain a very effective 3RW, in which case the money is right on the mark and the player should be reasonably easy to trade, if dealing him makes sense. There is plenty of potential that JP will make a solid case for a top six role, in which case Edmonton gets a value deal for one season and Puljujarvi will be paid full value when the signs his next contract.

Puljujarvi is a big, right-handed man with speed and skill. Edmonton doesn't have another NHL-ready player like him. The Oilers feel they are ready to compete for a Stanley Cup. Although they have cap issues, its unlikely the Oilers are going to trade one of their few natural right wings unless doing so improves their roster.

Habs fans may turn their noses up at the suggestion Tyson Barrie might be a valuable addition to their favorite team; that's fair, we are all entitled to have an opinion.
I take some issue with your valuation of Barrie and Hoffman though, it seems to be a bit off. I appreciate that the Habs cap issues are similar to Edmonton's, so it makes sense that you'd want to see an equal exchange of salaries, but Hoffman is a one-dimensional forward on the decline, much closer to a pure cap dump than Barrie is. Barrie is an offensive RD, he's not a strong defender but he continues to deliver near-elite level performance as a power play quarterback and is better than average in support of the transition game; he still offers good value. Don't believe me? Have a close look at the numbers John Klingberg has posted over his career and compare them to Tyson Barrie's. Klingberg just signed a 1-year, $7M contract with the Ducks, Barrie's AAV is $4.5M for each of the next two seasons. As an Oiler fan, I'd be happy with a swap of Barrie and Savard. Why? Because the only reasons Tyson Barrie is discussed as a trade option is because Evan Bouchard looks like he's also an elite PP QB, and the Oilers have some cap issues. Still, I appreciate that such a trade isn't going to receive support from Habs fans.
I don't know that the Canadiens are interested in Barrie, but if they are, and if salaries exchanged need to be balanced, then Montreal will either have to package a couple of less costly players, or perhaps send a lower AAV with a slightly longer term. In either case, those players would have to be capable of providing Edmonton with effective depth within the bottom six forwards.

I understand a desire to bring players home, but there is no way the Oilers trade RNH and Tyson Barrie for Bo Horvat, Tyler Myers, and a draft pick. Edmonton is already likely to shed at least one contract in order to get under the salary cap; they aren't going to swing a trade that puts them $1.85M further over the cap.
I like Horvat, but I think RNH represents better value for Edmonton, and Myers is at least $3,000,000 overpaid for the role he'd play with the Oilers. No thanks.

I see no reason to chase Patrick Kane. Sure the offensive potential might be outrageous, but the Oilers are likely to be better served by finding more balance across the roster. Its likely that the trade market for Tyson Barrie will improve as the TDL nears, maybe he can be exchanged for some depth scoring up front. If the 2023 1st round pick and a middling prospect are potential trade pieces, its possible the Oilers can acquire a veteran, shut-down, RHD to replace Barrie. At that price, they ought to be able to find a player capable of playing second pair minutes and killing penalties. That is exactly what they need in the playoffs.

Agree, Dallas chose the budget option to fill the void when Klingberg left. However, a second round pick seems a pretty fair asking price if the team acquiring Barrie is in need of an offensive, power play specialist RHD.

Edmonton's group of top six forwards are among the top 4-5 in the league, and they have 2 of the best puck carriers and distributors in the world. As great as Patrick Kane may be, and regardless of how the ill-informed value Puljujarvi, Lavoie, Schaefer, Foegele, 2 late 1st round draft picks and a late 3rd round draft pick, the Oilers absolutely should not pay that kind of price to address a need they do not have. More offensive punch in the bottom six, and another top-4 d-man would make Edmonton much better and would not cost as much.
