Oilers run for the cup 22-23
It appears obvious that Foegele and Barrie are on the trade block, clearing cap space is now essential. I think the Oilers are very happy with Cody Ceci, and I think they want to keep him around. Having moved Zack Kassian to Arizona, they are probably looking to get heavier, and prefer to do so on the right wing, 4C, and/or RD. I have a lot of respect for Tyler Benson, but I think he will probably fill the role of role model and mentor in Bakersfield. It seems to me Holloway has already surpassed him, and the addition of Janmark doesn't bode well either.

There is risk with that third line, but the potential is quite good. it's the 4th line and lack of depth that are problematic. I's difficult to reconcile going all in if Devin Shore is a regular in the lineup and Derek Ryan is playing centre. Unless Shore really impressed at camp, I think he's going to see very limited playing time. Ryan is much more effective playing RW and taking faceoffs on his strong side.

I see at least two issues with your bottom six forwards, and I don't think adding Chychrun and Stralman compensates for them.

Sure, he's the best goaltender the Sharks have, and they have a lot of them.
The Oilers don't need Reimer. They benefit more from either having JP start the season in the 3rd line and work to earn top-6 minutes, or trading JP for a player that actually fits a need.

San Jose has a pile of goaltending prospects, that can't be argued. The suggestion that all those prospects are better than Fanti can be argued. Regardless, we are a long time from knowing whether Reimer is even a consideration for the Oilers.

Barrie to MTL Fogele dump
The cost of offloading contracts has been quite high this summer. I think it may be a bit more painful to dump Foegele, and I doubt Montreal would agree to add a pick.

playoff team or no
As an Oilers fan, I think the Flames remain very solid hockey club that will be in the mix as the next post season nears. There is a strong young nucleus in Calgary, it's surrounded by some very good veteran players, and the return for Tkachuk is quite good, all things considered. The playoff loss in the Battle of Alberta and the way in which their two top players left the team should be plenty of motivation and feed right into Darryl Sutter's hands.

Barrie has value. His contract is a relative value but given the cap constraints across the league it is difficult to move him without taking a contract back. That creates difficulty for the Oilers.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GeoZei</b></div><div>But then why Bear. He is less proven and shown to be very similar in that his defensive capability is sometimes lacking.</div></div>
I question that as well; although I recognize it's difficult to find a RHD who plays defense first, or a solid two-way game, and is suitable to play third pairing yet capable of stepping up against tougher competition when required. Those who are currently available appear to be either offensive d-men, and/or may be overwhelmed if required to play bigger minutes against tougher competition.
If given the choice between Bear or Barrie, I'd pick Barrie. He is capable of playing a reasonably well rounded game when partnered with a defensive LHD and he remains an elite-level PP contributor. Still, neither is ideal on a roster that includes Justin Schultz.

Although I'd be happy to see the Oilers make better use of the $4.6M cap hit that Barrie represents, I can't imagine why Ron Francis would want to have both him and Justin Schultz. Maybe one or the other, but not both.

At This point Blow it UP
Despite the cataclysm this summer, the Flames still have a pretty solid base from which to rebuild. Such a quick fall from contender status stings, I'm sure, but patience may be warranted here. I'm not a fan, but I can clearly see a number of hard working and talented players wearing the Flaming C and Darryl Sutter is the ideal coach at this point. Stay strong Flames fans, your day will come.

It's easy to fall victim to recency bias, especially given how Puljujarvi's last season unfolded. However, I expect an arbitrator would award Puljujarvi more than $2M. Look no further than Warren Foegele's contract and contribution. Compare that to what Puljujarvi did and it becomes difficult to argue JP shouldn't get something around $3M. I think a ruling around $2.5M - $2.75M would be a win for the Oilers.

Finishing every teams offseason 12-32
Given the salary cap constraints that most teams are dealing with, moving either Foegele or Barrie, or both, will require Ken Holland to take back contracts. The Oilers have a couple veterans who should be able to replace Warren Foegele, if Holloway can't. Moving Barrie will require the acquisition of a veteran RD to stabilize the third pairing with Broberg. So, it would make sense to scenario move Foegele for depth player, either bottom six forward or a RD or LHD with experience playing RD, who can be available to perform spot duty and is suitable to bury in Bakersfield. IMO, the ideal trade involving Barrie would be a veteran, stay at home, RD playing out the final year or two of a contract paying no more than $2M/season.
Of course, Foegele's future may be heavily dependent on what happens with Yamamoto, and Puljujarvi in particular. If the Oilers have to move one of those two, Foegele's ability to play either wing in the bottom nine comes in handy. He's a bit overpaid, but keeping him around would probably make sense.

Trade value aside, Puljujarvi might just sign with the Oilers if they offered him the same $3.1M cap hit Craig Smith currently carries.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>Keep Foegele in that case. No physical room on the roster for him. Don’t see them moving Peeke, one of the few defensive defensemen on the roster, but maybe as part of a Nyquist/Puljujarvi deal.</div></div>
As I pointed out at the beginning of that scenario, it is the perspective of an Oilers fan. If Edmonton could somehow unload Foegele, there would be space for Holloway and his ELC. That creates plenty of cap space for one of Yamamoto or Puljujarvi. Moving Barrie is not quite as straight forward because the Oilers simply do not have another RD on the NHL roster. They need a less costly player, and preferably one who can steady and support Broberg on the 3rd pairing.
The original post had Muzzin headed to Edmonton. That could work, but it's not ideal. Peeke isn't ideal either, because he has limited NHL experience. Still, he is a stay-at-home type defender who is younger and less expensive.
I'm sure Ken Holland would prefer a more veteran player than Peeke who is more suitable to a depth role than Muzzin. In the meantime, the cap situation is so bad across the league that it's difficult for any GM to find the ideal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gareg_painter</b></div><div>don’t see how that’s a bad trade they get a hood shut down dman on 3.6 mill and give up nothing</div></div>
It might work, if Tyson Barrie was traded away for draft picks and/or a prospect. Although, if the Oilers did get that kind of return for Barrie, they would be in a pretty strong position to outbid Toronto for Peeke. He's younger, less expensive, and could play bottom pairing with Broberg.
From the perspective of an Oilers fan, Puljujarvi and Foegele, and maybe a draft pick, to Columbus for Peeke and Nyquist works well if Barrie's cap hit is moved out in a separate trade. That gives the Oilers a top-6 forward on an expiring contract, and a young and inexpensive shut-down RD. Columbus gets a bit of extra cap space to sign Laine, and they bring in one of his buddies.

Sandin has not filed for arbitration so he can receive an offer sheet from any team, including the Oilers. However, they really don't need another young LD. As things stand right now, Philip Broberg is almost certainly going to stick with the Oilers this season and one of Dmitry Samorukov or Markus Niemenlainen will probably have to be moved.

If the Oilers can trade Tyson Barrie, I think a deal with the Devils could work well. IMO, the best scenario would see J.P. and his agent agree to contract terms prior to the trade, and Severson agree to sign a contract extension when he arrives in Edmonton. In that way both teams and players have some certainty.
Although I am really interested in seeing whether Samorukov can outcompete Niemelainen in October, I'd be okay sending him to New Jersey to solidify Edmonton's RD for a couple seasons.

Fair enough. Along that same line of thought, Puljujarvi brings enough value that the Oilers should be able to acquire an asset that will actually improve their roster. Sheary is not that kind of asset.

Janmark
I think Janmark fills some of the 4th line and PK role that Archibald played. Nowhere near as much physicality, but perhaps a bit more potential for depth scoring. I also think the Oilers now have to move Foegele and/or Barrie, if they intend to Sign Yamamoto and Puljujarvi. Of course, they may intend to trade one, or both, of those two RFAs.

At least two of Foegele, Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, and Barrie will have to go in order to fit a full roster under the salary cap and have enough wiggle room to accomodate injuries, bonuses, and in-season trades. One of Samorukov or Niemelainen will likely be gone too.
