clear cap
That's a lot to give up to clear Kassian and Smith off the cap... I think it would almost make more sense to send Smith to the minors. Barrie should have definite positive value if he keeps playing as he did since Woodcroft took over, you could probably get a 2nd for him. Use that 2nd and a maybe a lower/mid-tier prospect like Benson or Kesselring/Kemp to unload Kassian somewhere, and you get to keep your 1st rounder.

Tinkering
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ceeque84</b></div><div>Agreed about the goaltending. The situation looks grim. Fluery definitely wont sign in edmonton, and they dont have the cap space to take a run at Kuemper. I would rather Holland use that $5mill for Husso to get a good shutdown dman on the right side instead of a 5 yr gamble on an unproven goalie.
I wonder if there might be a trade out there, for say like Reimer from the sharks.... he has one more yr left so that could serve as a buffer to see what they have with Skinner up full time and maybe starting every 3rd game, also bridges the gap to the 2023/24 season when they have a bit more cap space to go out and pay a #1 if it doesnt look like Skinner is gonna be the guy....
I think if they can get Kane to agree to a 3 yr term they should do it... I doubt any other teams in the league will be offering more term than 2 or 3 yrs considering his history. It will be the dollar value offered that the Oilers will have a hard time competing with when it comes to getting him resigned. But with Kassian surely getting traded, bought out, fired to the moon, and not being able to resign Kane, this team will be hard up for some muscle.</div></div>
Yeah Reimer would definitely be an interesting target. Wonder what it would take to get him out of San Jose, the fact that they didn't trade him at the deadline makes me think they want to keep him, so you'd have to overpay. Would keep cap space open to sign a Manson or similar for D.
My logic for the Husso deal was a slight overpay in AAV to lower the contract duration. 3 years is still sort of manageable even if he's only average.
Toughness is a good point, something I didn't really consider. I wouldn't mind keeping Kane if the contract makes sense, shorter term and decent AAV, I'm just really scared of the organization keeping him over Yamo or Puljujärvi. That would 100% come back to bite them in the behind.

Tinkering
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ceeque84</b></div><div>overpay for McL, no need to offer up that kind of money to get him resigned.
They should do all they can to resign Kane over Yamo IMO.
That defense is still brutal.
Too much for Husso. He is still relatively unproven as far as Goal tenders go. $3.5mill x 3 should be the offer. Another team will probably offer more money and more term, but its a gamble for an unproven goalie and the Oilers dont have the cap space to be gambling.</div></div>
Fair point to all aside from re-signing Kane. Imo that's something you regret in two years, unless he's willing to sign for 4mil or less. That's probably not happening.
Goaltending I'd see as an overpay as well, but there really aren't many viable options available in free agency or via trade. Sure, you could try Fleury or Holtby or something, but they're probably not coming here. Husso is a gamble for sure, but if you look at it as him only making 500k more than Koskinen it might be more stomacheable.
As for the defence, I wrote that I was trying to be realistic...don't see Holland doing anything major like a Chychrun trade, and free agency isn't deep this season. Plus no cap space and so on. I'd argue there are improvements, Kulak is better than anybody we currently have on the depth-chart, and Benning is much more suited for shutdown 3rd-pairing duty than Barrie. Most of the signings are basically stopgaps until Bouchard is properly ready for top-pairing duty, Broberg is ripe and another D-prospect can take over bottom-pairing duty.

Honestly, I think the Oilers would take Palat for a 2nd in a heartbeat. I see Holland trying for whichever player would end up being exposed out of Killorn, Palat or Gourde (although it seems like he's safe). There's been rumors the Oilers might use their expansion situation to take a player from somewhere, but nothing concrete yet, which makes me think they're waiting for the Lightning to be done with the finals.

You'd probably have to give Buffalo more than that for Reinhart..
That left side D looks absolutely insane, but that's a lot of futures gone for it

My suspicions with Holland
The forwards look fine imo, Glendenning isn't ideal but could be worse. That D scares me, though.
I swear I shed a tear at that Bear trade. There was a bunch of reporting on Barrie reportedly going to FA like two weeks ago though, so I'm hoping that they won't actually keep him. His performance in the playoffs certainly won't have done him too much good....right? right?!

Trying to be realistic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ecupirate07</b></div><div>That is fair. I think Edmonton would be better suited to convincing Coleman to come play in Edmonton instead of Tatar. Instead of Hjalm at 2 million, get a 1 million or less physical defender as 3LD. Then use that extra money, the money save by getting Coleman intead of Tatar, and the Riley Nash money to get a decent 3rd C that can play harder minutes. Play Holloway on the 4th to ease them into the league / play with McDavid and Draisaitl some to give them extra minutes.</div></div>
I see what you're getting at. Not sure I'd go for Coleman over Tatar, though. He's a fine player with some hustle, but I see the Oilers looking for somebody who can really make an offensive impact on 1LW. Tatar definitely has that upside, Hyman would as well if Toronto can't sign him. Landeskog would be a dream, but can't see Colorado letting him go. I'd see Coleman more as an extra player to sign to play on your 2nd/3rd line, potentially if you can't sign Nuge or you trade Kassian/buy out Neal.
Pretty sure McLeod will be able to handle 3C minutes, he's looked excellent most of the time. He's got the defensive side down, and I figure some more offense will come next season. A really good, faceoff winning defensive 4C is what Edmonton is lacking, and Nash fits that to a tee. Literally nothing happens when he's on the ice. There's other players that fit that bill as well, like Cizikas. I also don't think the 4th line is a good place to "ease" a rookie with offensive upside into the league, especially if you're using the 4th line to shut down. 3rd line is a good mix of not too much responsibility, but chances to shine.
As for Hjalmarsson: I was looking for a very good shutdown D to help Bouchard along. Bouch's partner doesn't need to have any offense at all, but cover for him a bit. There are other players who fit the bill for sure, but I think Hjalmarsson would be a nice low-risk fit there.
But again, this is all just speculation! Definitely like your ideas as well, wouldn't be unhappy at all if that was what KH did.

Yeah forgot to add that in. Obviously he'd have to waive. Depends on what he wants really, he's for sure the backup here, but could maybe get more games on a rebuilding team.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ecupirate07</b></div><div>RNH must really love Edmonton to take that kind of discount.</div></div>
I'm going off the rumoured offer the Oilers have made, apparently around 5,5. But, as you can see, there's enough cap space open to give him an extra mil. Not sure I'd be comfortable with more than 6,75mil, he had a bit of a down season (statistically, not analytically, but that's what the Oilers org looks at. No analytics there, no sir.)

Seeing as I as an Oilers fan who loves Bear would do that trade in a hearbeat, I agree. Probably have to add a 2nd rounder or a decent prospect.

What makes you think Palat would be a buy -low option? He's tied with Point for second in scoring on the Lightning, 35P in 42GP. Not exactly a player you'd get for a 3rd and a 3LD..

Really like the FA signings. Not sure about Benson being picked in the Seattle expansion, I'm assuming Lagesson and/or Jones would be exposed if you're trading them? I reckon Seattle would probably take one of those guys. Hard to predict though..

I like most of this in principle, but I can't overstate how much of an overpay this would be on Lowry and especially Nash. Lowry might fetch this if the cap wasn't flat, but there's no way Nash gets more than 1,5mil, and that's being generous.

Tinkering Oil offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ken_holland</b></div><div>you need to pay johan larsson and bear more than that lol
barrie is a really bad signing. just bring up bouchard</div></div>
In a normal season Larsson would probably earn more, but I don't see teams jumping to pay him money for 18 points. I feel he might be similar to what happened to Sheahan last season. Bear is RFA with no arb-rights, Stauffer has been constantly hinting that he'll get "screwed" on a one year deal because he has no negotiating power.
As for Barrie, I'd prefer Bouch as well, but not sure he'll be able to immediately take over big minutes. Barrie for a year at 4,25 isn't exactly a bad signing IMO, he has the upside to be great on the PP, and if he really has regressed to what he was with the Leafs you walk on from him next season.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DJSums17</b></div><div>No on leafs trade. Don't need that cap hit.</div></div>
Just going off some smoke that's been around this here. Khaira's been linked to the Leafs multiple times, he could replace Clifford on the roster. But if they go crazy and sign Pietrangelo or something, that's off for sure. If push comes to shove and the Oilers are able to move out a bit of cap space elsewhere I could also see them retaining like 200k to make this work.
