<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>Yeah, I think what actually happened turned out even better for the Penguins than what you were proposing. The only negative was that they took on nearly all of Karlsson's cap hit, but unloading more than enough contracts to cover it as part of the same trade, rather than having to make separate deals to pay other teams to take them, was a major coup. (They did have to bring in a third team, but I suspect they did that only because San Jose was on Petry's no-trade list, otherwise San Jose would have taken the package that went to Montreal.) It probably saved them having to give up POJ and other prospects and young roster players.</div></div>

I agree what ended up happening was better. To be fair, I would have been super down to see Petry on the third pairing locked in with someone else, and generally Rutta is a defensive guy so that would have rounded out our blue line a bit better.

But yeah our futures are good to go and we only gave up one first round pick... which was the bare minimum to get this deal done.

AND we still have POJ which is kinda hilarious that SJ didn't just push for him... like maybe even instead of that 1st rounder. But hey Mike Grier is clearly not a good GM.

The negative of the cap hit kind of just is what it is, but it's something we can work around, with everyone else signed to manageable hits and nobody with crazy ass term clogging stuff up.

Super hyped for this season!

Basically, to get out of all those deals and bring in EK was huge. I personally thought you might have to sweeten the pot with more futures and prospects but MTL was happy with a 2nd and the Hoffman dump. Maybe San Jose loves Hoffman. lol

And yea the fact that they didn't retain more, is def why there weren't more pieces included from our prospect pool and draft capital. I think that's better too bro. Big time DUB from DUBAS here and he won this offseason big time.

Only thing I don't love is the Jarry deal... but hey, maybe we can trade him to WPG for Hellebuyck at the trade deadline lol

Kinda late to the party but man, the return for San Jose here is terrible... I had a mock of this with separate amalgamations, but I just assumed SJ would retain more to get more from us, and that another team would do the same thing. Guess nobody wants to have money on the long term books... but yeah holy sh i TE! Grier got next to nothing.

The potential return of Hoffman or whoever else non withstanding, and as some other people pointed out, he got NO prospects or futures out of this deal. How the Fk! do they not INSIST on Joseph being included in this deal???????

That blows my mind. Did they want a 1st more than him? That also makes no sense.

San Jose, they must have been in the mindset of "We have to get out of this contract" as opposed to "We have to maximize value for the return of trading the reigning Norris Trophy winner"

Like, they aren't trying to be good now, so the addition of Rutta doesn't move the needle for their defense (which is terrible, btw. Rutta, although he is a sparsely used bottom pairing guy, does in fact make their blue line better). Granlund makes their offense better...technically. Hoffman... can be flipped? I mean realistically their team, on paper, got better, but for a rebuilding team, don't they want players that will be good.... later?

The Pens got their guy, cleared out a bunch of pieces that never quite fit completely... and gave up very little in long term assets. Oh yeah, they also get a cheap young forward with an undetermined ceiling.

These line combos are gonna be interesting.

In my mocks I had us paying much more to get more retention, but this is a big swing the other way.

Nice job Kyle. For real dawg, mad respect.

And yeah, Montreal got nice haul here, but Petry doesn't fit on their blue line currently. Glad he was willing to go back there. I thought he was fine here in his one year but if you have to trade a guy to get Erik Karlsson you do it. Doesn't even really matter the guy.

People here saying that his contract is bad need to wise up. This is a generational talent; arguably the best defensemen of the past decade. You have the opportunity to get him you do it and you figure out the rest later. Our PP is about to become a big time threat.

Hot damn am I excited for this season! LGP!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Weaponizing the space can also mean picking up useful players from teams who are too tight against the cap to keep them. Some of those targets would be Rutta from Pitt, Jarnkrok from Toronto, etc. Since we lost Thrun I would also look into reacquiring Petterson, but given his status as a budget contract for Pitt and win now mode, I don't see him moving out for what Anaheim has to offer.

We also don't want to be saddled with Granlunds deal, we've got kids to try out. Verbeeks additions this off-season show he wants to turn the ship around and start building back a winning culture. We keep tanking and the young stars we have will want out.

I known Dubas wants to make a splash, but I don't see the Ducks playing ball.</div></div>

Well, Granlund isn't a bad player, per se, so he wouldn't have been a whole dump... he would slot into the top 6/9 there. He does have some upside. And his deal runs one more year, it wouldn't be a long term saddle like the retention on Karlsson. He is apparently a high character guy.

The Pens would def want to keep Pettersson, all things considered, and losing him would kind of suck for balance, but if he is the one piece that'll make the deal work we would have to do it.

So there is value to be had there, because your blue line is also terrible.

Rutta would make sense for both teams, but if they wanted Pettersson we might have to do that instead.

The prospects I would rather us keep, Smith and Nylander, could also be a big boost potentially with more playing time.

Ty Smith is young and can grow into a top 4 role; his offense is legit.

Nylander has shown he has great skill, with more room to play maybe he sticks in a top 6 group.

All that being said, Jeff Petry would immediately become your best D if he was included somehow. He has trade protection, and again I would rather keep him, but if he would waive to go to Anaheim for two years it might be worth exploring.

It would depend on how Anaheim wanted to weaponize their cap space.

Now, another thing to consider! is the haul from Chicago. Maybe we swing a player from that your way, like maybe Anaheim wants a player off their roster and they throw that in to make it work.

All I'm saying! is that yinz have the most cap space in the league by a long shot and your GM has talked about using it to make the team better. A third party deal here where you improve your club in the short term and long term makes a lot of sense for me.

Plus... we want EK !

What other third team has as much short and long term space as yinz?!
