Moving up to 1st overall
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffGorton</b></div><div>Arent you one of the folks that said Monahan wasnt getting a 1st? You dont seem to learn that you have no idea about value or simply ignore all context with trades. Its time NHL fans sat down and listened to Habs fans who have been proven right more often than wrong</div></div>
I said NJD wouldn't pay a 1st for Monahan because he is too slow and doesn't fill a need
I said that there is no way a fringe playoff team offers an unprotected 1st for Monahan
I said Monahan wouldn't return a 1st+
No team is trading celebrini.
let alone for a collection of spare parts.
The historical value of a 1st overall is equivalent to 4th overall+5th overall combined.
Now tell me, would you trade your 5th overall pick for Arber Xhekaj and a contender's 1st?

Giving UFAs extra term to sign in SJ
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vols94</b></div><div>Yeah probably another year before the young guys are impactful but I expect some of them will stick like Eklund this year. Grier has shown he'll give term for guys. We have plenty of bottom of the lineup guys both signed or in the AHL. this team needs a top 6 winger badly. i rather fill in the bottom next year with young guys and spend like 2x6M on a guy who can get 25 goals</div></div>
It's worth noting that it's less about the amount of time and more about when the deals end. Benning got 4 years last year and Burroughs got 3 years this year. None of the contracts GMMG has signed go beyond the 25-26 season. That's also the final year of the Vlasic contract (barring a potential buyout giving a reduced amount but extending the timeline). It seems like he's trying to have the cap table as empty as possible when it's time for the team to start to look at making the playoffs. Note that I'm not suggesting they'll be contenders in 26-27, more of a Detroit/Buffalo/Ottawa position where there's reason to believe they could compete for the playoffs. I see him making similar offers this year, potentially limiting them to 2 years unless they're someone he thinks might actually be part of the next good Sharks team (and obviously ELCs aren't included in that).

campbell petersen trade comparison
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>I think the SJS owner cares about the retention... wasn't one of Grier's stumbling blocks on trading EK65 was that the owner demanding the best trade with the least amount cash retained.
The Ceci part will be just like Phi getting Walker added into the trade, an easy UFA rental the team can trade for more picks from a desperate playoff contender at the TDL.</div></div>
The difference was Karlsson was discussed at 50% retained to max value and paying 5.75 mil a year for a player to play on another club for 4 years is stomach churning.
Next season Sharks are likely playing near the cap floor and therefore the need for the retention is outweighed by the additional return we could get without it.

Why are there so many one sided trades paying mostly scrap for a decent player. Is it too intellectual to make trade fair and useful to both teams?

Broberg will probably be placed on waivers next year if he's still in Edmonton. He just simply hasn't taken that next step. My ask from Edmonton would be 1st + Broberg for Tanev

Sabres would just keep Johnson instead of retaining for a 7th. My guess is they could get a third for him if they retain half. Experienced RHD are at a premium at the moment.

Rangers Post-Deadline
That’s a really easy way to get your number blocked by Pat Verbeek.
Kappo Kakko is no longer a 2nd overall pick or “top prospect”. He’s middle six forward at best who’s consistently injured or consistently struggling.
You want to put him in a package? That’s fine. But to think Anaheim even thinks about trading two players they can fetch 1st round picks for for Kappo Kakko and ONLY Kappo Kakko is absolutely ridiculous.

A first is the extremely low end of the price just to dump Campbell's contract, you're definitely not getting anything of value along with that.

:laugh Anaheim isn't touching Goodrow nor does he waive for the 3rd worst team in the NHL.
Craig Conroy isn't retaining on Noah Hanifin, When he only makes $700,000 more than K'Andre Miller.

If not we'll have to make do with a 3rd. But not one in 2027. 🤭

Especially since they are already using 2 retention slots on multi year deals. Also the retention alone is worth most of that package, Colorado would have to add significantly here

Nope, And especially not for garbage. Too retain that much alone would cost a minimum of 3 1st round picks.

Zero point the sharks make that deal and Duclair has been good mentor for us and I wouldn’t mind seeing us resign him. If we do trade him it won’t be for a more expensive rental who is providing less production.

If I remove Granlund for Ceci, it'll looks slightly better, as Granlund can be traded elsewhere for more assets.
And yes I forgot about the 2 retains SJS is already using for Burns and EK65.
