I wonder is Dube would be a better Centre than Ruzicka and whether Toffoli should be slotted in at LW.
Only thing I don't like is Lucic being in. We play a Young Fast Team in NJD tonight, so I'd go with more Acceleration & Defense: Rooney-Lewis-Ritchie
Also, I believe Tanev will be out again</div></div>
Nico Hischier is on pace to be a Selke finalist this year, stacking the 1st line and leaving the others out to dry is almost counterproductive. Also Lucic isn't a slow skater he just doesn't have great acceleration anymore. With the gameplan generally being to out grind teams, especially ones that rely so much on their speed like Jersey Lucic should definitely be in the lineup

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yycofred</b></div><div>I think what I suggested in my head is a bit of a get right line for Lindholm, tough to start slow with Mangiapane and Dube on your line. I do think by season end the Flames top line is Huberdeau, Lindholm, Mangiapane as you suggested. Despite the constant dragging of the guy Toffoli looks dangerous again, 53 shot attempts with only 33 shots, he's shooting right around his career average but not getting a ton of shots through. I think a part of it is that he and Lindholm like to occupy the same space 5 on 5 in the o zone, Lindholm possesses the puck at an elite level on offense and Toffoli doesn't have the quickness to get open when covered. Kadri and Huberdeau are elite at zone entries and opportunities on the rush, tough not to be open when one of those two have the puck at top speed, he should be able to be a good trailer guy on that line that gets a ton of shooting opportunities in dangerous areas.</div></div>
Yeah it's nothing against Toffoli. I think what you are saying is accurate here. Him and Lindholm similar players and just don't mesh well. I think Toffoli would fit very well playing with Kadri though (that or with Backlund/Coleman of we acquire another top 6 winger or promote someone from our pool). The Huberdeau line really needed a puck carrier though

A different looking team at the deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingofRnR</b></div><div>Late 1st + Zary for Horvat 50% retained would be a steal. I would expect at least another 2nd and maybe another Prospect for the retention. At just 27, Horvat is in his peak years and he's Canadian, so is more likely to sign & stay in CGY = less of a Flight Risk.
Boeser has better size, but he's soft and lazy compared to Garland who would be a much better fit on the Flames even though he's on the smaller size. Boeser is a one-dimensional offensive player afaic. If we did bring him in, it'd be for the 1RW position, but again, I'd prefer the Canadian Centre or Garland more.
Horvat >>> Kadri at FaceOffs, so have him take the FaceOffs and then move & play RW like MTL is doing with Monahan
I'd have Mang compete with Garland for the 1RW. Toffoli just doesn't have enough foot speed to be on a line with Huby & Lindy. He should be used on the #1 PP and with Coleman & Backlund imo or sent to VAN for Horvat, Garland or Boeser, but I don't see Sutter letting his Lucky Charm go</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yycofred</b></div><div>It would be a steal, but so unlikely. Especially in division.
Again, Boeser and Garland could be argued until you're blue in the face, either or would be a great acquisition.
There are significantly more responsibilities to be a C than taking faceoffs, I get it's important but a 4% swing isn't worth having guys swapping positions mid shift because one of the projected worst teams in the league is doing it with a coach that has notoriously said he just wants the guys to play as opposed to the anti-Marty St. Louis structural guru that Sutter is.
I mean Toffoli is at a point per game clip right now.. it obviously doesn't sustain but if he's producing at a .70 - .75 that's still 55+ points while playing a really really strong defensive game that pairs well with Lindholm and let's Huberdeau take risks in the OZone that line shouldn't be touched at this point. That DNA line is seriously too good to break up right now.</div></div>
Good thoughts here, appreciate the feedback. The original goal of the post was to show a general return for Horvat though as a rental. It really doesn't have to be Calgary as the recipient. Any contender will work.

I think that's actually the thing that worries me from the Ducks end...Klingberg is absolutely a dynamic offensive threat, and he has absolutely upgraded our powerplay. I just worry that his lack of savy on the defensive end might hold some teams back from paying up for him. That being said, a 2023 1st+ok prospect is what I'd hope to get back in a deal, with a 2nd+decent prospect, similar to the Manson deal, being far more likely.

I would love to see a move to get one of the big names at the deadline but I don't know if the Flames have the brass to go acquire a straight up rental player like Kane at a premium cost. It's a shame it's Vancouver having a melt down cause a Boeser, Horvat or Garland would sure look good in this line up, don't ever see that coming to be though!</div></div>

Kylington on the other hand has shown he's ready for full-time NHL duties and that he can produce & contribute offensively, something NYI needs if they want to improve on their fine defensive & goaltending play. Make room for Wahlstrom in the Top-6 by moving Beauvillier out.

I don't see the Islanders making the Playoffs yet again this season and so they should be moving players for assets.
Mayfield is a 3rd Pairing D-Man and Pending UFA = Rental. The best you can hope for is a late 2nd, which is essentially what Anaheim got for Manson. If Mayfield wants to re-sign and go back to the Islanders in the off-season, so be it, but the Islanders would be dumb to not get anything for renting him out.
Kylington = Beauvillier 50% retained for 1 season. I compensated for the retention on the next season by sending Meloche who is an Excellent & Experienced RD RFA Prospect, who would make most NHL Teams as well. Rooney was included as a replacement player, but CGY could certainly ship him out elsewhere for the 5th should they need/choose too, no problem.</div></div>

I do see a little hope in terms of the coaching staff seeing him as more well rounded this seasons just based on how he's being deployed (66% Dzone Starts) Murray obviously isn't the ideal partner for him, would be nice if the Oilers went out and got him a lock down partner than let him play a little more on the edge. I won't speak on it cause I obviously don't know as much as an Oilers fan would but if you could hand pick a partner for Bouchard, who would it be?</div></div>
From our current roster, honestly id roll Bouch on the 2nd line with Kulak, Keep the Shutdown pair of Nurse - Ceci, Fire Barrie into the sun, and have a 3rd pair of Nemalainen - Broberg, Puck mover with big, physical shutdown defender, Broberg has said he can play just fine on his off side
This time next year is a different story, would absolutely run Bouch as the 1RD, Kulak - Ceci 2nd line shutdown and Nemo - Broberg as a super solid 3rd pair with Desharnais as the 7th dman
Desharnais is a big shutdown defender who only isnt playing right now as he dealt with an injury from training camp, I think we could have very well seen barrie dumped and him on the 3rd pair if he was able to play preseason

Monahan and the Middle of the pack Habs
find someone who loves you as much as Habs fans love wildly overreacting to a 4 game sample size, apparently. He's got 2 points - I think everyone is happy to see him skating well and playing well again, but let's pump the brakes a little before we flip him out for a 1st rounder.
For some context here's the forwards (and their numbers when they were moved) that were traded around last year's TDL for a 1st: Andrew Copp (13-22-35 in 56 GP), Claude Giroux(18-24-42 in 57 GP), Brandon Hagel(21-16-37, 55 GP). Hagel was valued more for his contract/production ratio (only $1.5M cap hit) and his RFA years, so he's not super applicable here. Giroux has been nearly a PPG scorer for most of his career, and was even clocking in around 0.75 pts/GP in his age-33 season when he was moved. Copp was averaging about 0.7pts/GP when he was moved, and his defensive play at C was a big reason for his increased value as well.
I'm not saying that Monahan can't get to that level over the next 45-50 games, but that's a looooong road to go, and the fact that he no longer plays center is going to hurt his value a bit compared to guys like Copp and Giroux who could still pull it off. It's definitely a nice story to see him playing well again, but I'm still very doubtful that Montreal is going to get paid a 1st to eat the contract and flip him out for a 1st in the same calendar year.

I’m not opposed to Ruzicka simply replacing Lewis at 3RW as well though. They tried him at LW but now try him at RW</div></div>
Phillips simply isn't good enough to be a legitimate top 6 NHLer, Ruzicka 100% has the tools to be a bottom 6 forechecker.
It's been 2 games and Darryl was very critical of both Dube and Mang in the last game, calling that pur best line and "no need to break up" is fairly shortsighted. Toffoli could very easily mesh just fine with Dube and Kadri

Calgary Flames signed MacKenzie Weegar (8 Years / $6,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DongLord23</b></div><div>You just said they peak 24-31 & defenceman peak later without any data at all.
</div></div>
Yeah, and I backed up this point. I didn't say they peak between 23-28 because I googled "NHL Player Peak Age", click the first link, and say where the lines were the highest. I wonder if you actually read the methodology for the chart instead of demanding everyone else post data. It's 5-6 years out of date and WAR has evolved since then.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DongLord23</b></div><div>
What are you talking about? You'd come to the conclusion that there aren't many defenceman playing at 21-23 and the only guys playing are your top tier talents like Doughty/Karlsson/Makar/Heiskanen etc... There's a dropoff because most of your mid to late round picks debut at 24.
</div></div>
Maybe look up what "face value" means. The "Defenseman" line as a very clear decline between 24 and 30. Without any additional information, you would derive the conclusion that defenseman peak at 23 and get worse through 24-30. The chart doesn't provide the information regarding sample sizes for each age or the overall ability of players at each age or the number of new players debuting at each age. You'd have to go to the article page to get that information which you haven't posted.
A better way to convey the information would be to determine the change in WAR between players who debut at certain ages. Players who debut at 18 versus those who debut at 24 will have different career paths and that's not reflected on the chart.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DongLord23</b></div><div>
"I don't see what's wrong with saying this" because it's usually not true. The only defenceman that seem to be able to keep it up in their 30s are HOF talent guys. I wouldn't be surprised if Makar could be an exception. Weegar isn't that.
</div></div>
Weegar is a guy I'd take a bet on to play well into his 30s. A lot of guys do fall off but there definitely is a handful of top 4 guys in their 30s who are still decent and Weegar could easily join them.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DongLord23</b></div><div>
Because bloating your cap space with guys out of their prime isn't how you build a good team. That's how you become the Sharks/Preds. Making the playoffs every year but not sniffing the cup.</div></div>
Would've been better to use examples of teams that haven't reached the Stanley Cup Finals using this strategy but whatever.

Weird how the big analytics guy that's against giving older players big contracts thinks this is smart now. I guess it's smart when it's the team you root for lol.</div></div>
Obviously the whole trade is a big bet on age.
But Florida gave a tonne of today value up to get the younger stud.
Huberdeau was 5th in mvp voting this past year. 5th! Tkachuk had a single last mvp place vote
Huberdeau is also back to back second team left wing (Tkachuk is last year's second team rw)
So in huberdeau alone they got back a guy who today is literally as good or better than Tkachuk.
For the difference in age they got a first pairing defender in his prime (he's younger at 28) a first and a good prospect.
The reason the trade was made is obvious. Huberdeau is a stud leaving his prime and Tkachuk is a stud entering his. But Florida paid through the teeth for that.
Who wins? I'm leaning 50/50. But there's Gamble's both ways (I do HATE the term on huberdeau but find it fascinating all the people who wanted to pay Gaudreau and don't like the Huberdeau contract. Huberdeau is better than Johnny hockey and close in age)
