If peter never came
Realistically if Chiarelli wasn't a meathead the team would probably look something like:
Hall-McDavid-Puljujarvi
Nuge-Draisaitl-Yamo
Eriksson Ek-Strome-Kassian
Benson-Khaira-Chiasson
Nurse- Bear
Klefbom-Bouchard
Russell-Jones
Koskinen
Good top 9, average defense, same bad goaltending. That's my best guess.

Geeze that's a massive overpayment for Kuemper. May as well add some to that and offer that to Anaheim for Gibson.

To be a top 5 player he needs to be much better at defence.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>If you want to just cherry pick the bad moves of a GM, you can go on forever for any GM. It’s a really stupid tactic.
Also, you listed a couple moves that aren’t that bad.
I wasn’t necessarily a huge fan of the seguin return, but they absolutely HAD to trade Seguin. And it really hurts the story of the trade that eriksson instantly got a horrid concussion (once he returned to normal he was a 30-30 guy with elite defense), and Sweeney started down his path of horrible moves trading Reilly smith. The big error was over valuing joe morrow. If the trade was eriksson, smith, Fraser, and a first instead of morrow, I’m okay with it.
The boychuk trade was awesome. A+. Fantastic. Most overrated player in bruins history. A year later he signs one of the worst contracts in the league, and the bruins have a couple second rounders.
Pastrnak, Bergeron, Marchand, Grzelcyk, Miller, Krejci, and Rask were all either drafted, acquired, or signed to their current deal by Chiarelli. Kinda important guys. (I think you’re smart enough not to bring Gorton into this, which is why i haven’t mentioned him until now. That take still makes me laugh)</div></div>
Chiarelli really did set back the Oilers by YEARS. He was handed a golden ticket and tried to expedite the process. Didn't do his research on Reinhart, and how it worked out is he moved Hall, Eberle, a mid 1st, high 2nd and in return had Adam Larsson to show for it. One of the biggest asset management fails I can think of.
He planned his rosters around 18 year olds on multiple occasions. Puljujarvi was rushed and when Bouchard was drafted, Chiarelli viewed that as a plug and play top 4 RHD instead of actually trying to acquire a legitimate top 4 defenseman. It took Todd McLellan refusing to dress Bouchard for him to get sent down.
Sure he made some good moves. Talbot was a good bet that had a great run in 2017 but then predictably regressed. Pat Maroon was a good move that worked out for a couple seasons but a 25+ goal pace for him wasn't sustainable
I understand why he signed Lucic, but it was too long and everyone knew it was going to be boat anchor after 3 or 4 years. And it turned out horribly after just 2 years...
He tried so hard to replicate that big heavy hockey style, instead of building around the strengths his current players had. And in his final year he was just throwing darts trying to save his job and unnecessarily threw away drafts picks and solid depth players for scraps.

This is the classic black and white convo. I am saying Draisaitl is a really good player but he isn't a top 5 player and you are hearing he's crap. No one is saying that. Just temper your feelings on this. He is still really good but he definitely isn't as good as people like to think he is.</div></div>
Umm you said he wasn't a top 10. Why are you changing your narrative all of the sudden? It's fine if you think he's overrated. You're entitled to your opinion but don't start a debate with statements that have no merit especially when you don't watch the Oilers. Oilers would be Ottawa level bad without McDavid? Really? Based on what? Their prospect pool is terrible ? It's actually very very good and they have a stable of players who project really well. But you wouldn't know that because you just posted without actually putting in some thought behind it.

It's such a moronic thing to say. They're on a line with good players because THEY ARE ALSO GOOD PLAYERS. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>McDavid does that on over half his points. He may centre his own line and often find offensive success but still the majority of his points come when McDavid is on the ice. On top of that he gives up as much as he creates at 5v5, (that is not completely the case this season but this season is going to be harder to judge). He isn't a top 10 centre let a lone a top 5 player. MacKinnon, Matthews, Eichel, Barkov, Petterson, Schiefele, Crosby, McDavid are all definitely better than Draisaitl unless you only look at points. Which as you mentioned, isn't everything. All of these guys have better 200 foot games or are just better offensively (McDavid). I would be surprised if Draisaitl was a point per game if McDavid wasn't on his team. He's a good player, but his stats are definitely inflated because of McDavid.</div></div>
Keep using that narrative all you want. It's completely off base and ridiculous. Is he a better player because of McDavid? Absolutely. Just as McDavid is a better player because of Draisaitl.

Right, scoring goals (the hardest thing to do in the NHL) and creating goals are overrated.

He's a good player for sure but he's not nearly as good as many make him out to be. He just gets lots of points, most of which while playing with McDavid. Yamamoto is good as is RNH, but other than that they don't have a lot. Fixing a complete lack of depth doesn't happen overnight especially when they have not alot of good prospects or cash.</div></div>
You clearly know nothing about the Oilers. Comments like this make me laugh. Guys who claim to be knowledgable about another team and their prospect pool, but in reality are just trying to sound smart. Draisaitl is a top 5 player in the league. If you actually watched him play you'd know that points aren't everything. The things he does on the ice are unreal. But you actually have to watch something other than YouTube to know that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>I'm not sure I agree with this. Larkin was in the NHL full time in Draft+2 after having completed a pretty strong year in the NCAA. Holloway's scoring is stronger than Larkin's was, he's actually in his 2nd year in NCAA (Larkin played just one year) and he's physically stronger than Larkin will ever be. If he shows well in camp I won't be the least bit surprised if he makes the opening night roster.
Agreed. Broberg won't be rushed, he'll start in the AHL and earn his way to a mid-season injury call up. Sambo is the guy to watch.</div></div>
Interesting, I didn't know that about Larkin. I like Holloway a lot. He plays a game similar to Yamamoto, and I love yamos game. Except Holloway has size to go with it. I'd still be surprised if Holloway is on the team though. Like you said maybe he gets a look after a good camp, but he will have to continue to show well into the reg. season. I remember Yamo have 2 consecutive stellar camps but then he struggled against teams full rosters. So we'll see. Love the player though.

No chance Holloway sees NHL time next year with Holland as the GM. Lavoie and Broberg are also very unlikely. Broberg needs and full year, Lavoie maybe earns a midseason call up if he is playing well and there is opportunity on the roster. Samorukov is the guy we will likely see as a rookie.

Well it was never realistic. I think a lot of fans expected them to be maybe top 2 or 3. They did improve in the offseason but I think many didn't realize the impact Kelfbom had on this team. That mightve had to do with Barrie coming in, and Barrie has actually looked really good the last few games. But we will see! It's still early. I think they will make the playoffs, maybe as the 3 seed but likely as the 4th.

Oleksiak and Heiskanen have perfect chemistry together Heiskanen is a two-way dman and Oleksiak is a defensive dman, Nurse is an offensive dman. Nurse would maybe be the 4th best man in Dallas, but not in the top 4.</div></div>
I mean everyone could make an argument based on things like who meshes well with who and what is a good fit. I don't get the notion that Nurse is an purely an offensive defenseman. He's not. Although since the start of 17-18 he's 13th in EV scoring among Dmen. But he's really taken a step this season in being positionally sound, and a lot of that has to do with maturity and experience. He's not making some of the questionable plays that he has in the past.
