20-21: ****
21-22: great right up until it mattered most and then **** the bed vs your biggest rivals
22-23: below average
23-24: fantastic start the year and absolutely fell off a cliff late</div></div>
Begs the question, why do you guys want Markström so badly then lol!? Ahh cause you’re on glue and don’t have a clue
20-21, 21-22 playoff series against EDM & 22-23 were average, the rest of the time he has been excellent
Find another Goalie and continue missing the Playoffs, I really don’t care 🤷♂️ lol. Honestly I don’t think Markstrom or any Goalie will improve your Team much, they need that much help. Just like BUF, OTT & Utah, so much Talent being spoiled and wasted. It’s really and truly becoming a travesty because their Owners & GM’s are clueless & cheap just like most of their Fans

If it’s Korpisalo, I think it goes like this:
Markstrom + Rooney + Hanley + 2024-1st-VAN = 28OA
FOR
Korpisalo + Kastelic + Brannstrom + Ostapchuk + 2024-1st-OTT = 7OA
Whether Ostapchuk gets included and/or there’s a small retention on Markström or a Mid-Pick gets added by CGY would be debatable

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>Marino signed his contract as a 1st time RFA pre breakout vs Markstrom signing his as a 30 year old UFA.
And as always, you pretend Markstrom is some guarantee.
You ignore the fact that Markstrom hasn’t been worth his contract in 2/4 years in Calgary, with his poor play in 20-21 and 22-23 being large parts of why very good Calgary Flames teams missed the playoffs. You ignore the history of aging goalies (not good).
Name the teams that have multiple RHD better than Marino. I will wait</div></div>
Markstrom was excellent in 2021-22 all the way up until they ran in to the Oilers in the playoffs
In 22-23 the team fell apart, they lost Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Kylington all year and it was basically a whole new Team with Tanev missing time dealing with an injury as a result of the previous playoffs and Coach Sutter being a drag on the Team, but primarily being significantly distracted with his wife’s first pregnancy and arrival of their first child
Markstrom had an excellent 23-24 until after the Trade Deadline again due to the loss of key players and friends in Hanifin, Lindstrom & Tanev and then there the whole fallout and drama from the failed trade to NJD
I’m happy to educate you on your ignorance when it comes to the Flames and their Players, but I’m not jumping through hoops analyzing each teams RD depth lol. Marino is an average player. Markstrom is elite. How you can’t get this wrapped around your head is your problem dude

Right, Markstrom gets paid more at $6mil/yr than Marino, because he’s less valuable. That makes complete sense, not
Right there is your and Fitz’s problem. You value what would be a 3rd Pairing D-Man on most Teams who pitches in 18-22mins/night higher than the guy in net for 60 minutes/night x 50-60GP = double the ice time
Perhaps if you actually valued the position of need and realized trying cheaper options that had nice stats on another team won’t replicate that same success in NJD with their weak & leaky defence, you might actually make the playoffs

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>Calgary doesn't want/need Bastian as we need to make room for our own forwards graduating from the A. I like Holtz as a sniper to try to pair to Huberdeau to get them both to take a step forward. Less retention and a straight swap is probably preferred from the Flames perspective as ownership is probably going to be looking to save real $ without playoff revenue.</div></div>
The benefit of Bastian is he can play Centre and in all situations including a Front Net Presence on the PP or on the PK if need be. Add he’s ultra physical and he’s a good guy to have as a 4th line Winger or 13th/14th Forward. Teams typically keep Vets in the press box over their AHL’ers who are better served continuing to develop with game action. That said, Flames already have Hunt, Rooney & Duehr and could re-sign AJ Greer or see if Cole Schwindt or Adam Klapka is ready to make the leap
Huberdeau does better with a Big Fast Power Forward or two as his linemates, which Holtz is not, not to mention we already have Coronato. Anthony Duclair, Martin Pospisil, Vasiky Podkolzin type players would likely do much better on a line with Huberdeau than Holtz would imo

Holtz is maybe worth a 2nd Round Pick at best now and only because he has 1 more season of Waivers Eligibility. He’s inconsistent and didn’t even make Team Sweden for this years World Cup.
Tons of Top-10 picked guys values plummet: Kakko’s, Kotkieniami’s & Podkolzin’s have, Puljujarvi, Zadina, Kravtsov, Dylan Strome did. Projecting what they may become as teenagers vs. What they actually become are too vastly different animals

Markstrom to NJD, Yes, but we won’t get quite that much. I personally don’t think you’re that far off though
I’d pass on the other 2 Trades. There’s just no incentive to move Rempe unless it’s a clear over pay

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>colby</b></div><div>theres more to goalie stats then save% but markstrom the known streaky and hit or miss goalie is not getting a good/great return unless ur eating 2+m on his deal. that isnt that valueable as is considering his last 2 years and hes 34. hes not going to magically return to an elite goalie and hes probably the 4/5th goalie on the market. if u think markstrom is an 8M goalie then ur already lost. hes been a bottom starter the last 2 years. ullmark hasnt even played bad in the playoffs. u would know that if u actually know anything about goalies. played very well in the only starting game he got and came in halfway through a blowout cold. 2 years ago he played great until he was very clearly hurt and they played him an extra game n 1/2. markstrom over his time in calg had 1 elite season 2 pretty poor seasons a terrible season and a pretty pissy playoff run. thats not an elite 1A goalie. thats a solid 1B/2A goalie whos being overpaid at 6m
U will get a first for him from a goalie hungry team and maybe midish prospect. nothing more no matter how much cap u eat. there are 2 better goalies teams can give up = assets for. markstrom is for sure not even close to saros or ullmarks value btw hes easily an entire tier below them.</div></div>
Goalies by nature are “streaky” and can go Hot or Cold at any time, regardless of their age
If you don’t understand what I pointed out in my last post about the difference between retaining an an expiring contract for the last 25% of a season after bonuses have already been paid out vs. for 2 entire seasons (tying up 2 retention spots btw) and can’t do the math, I really can’t help you
If you knew anything about Markström and his circumstances and could take the teams in front of them into consideration over the last 2 seasons, you might understand
Both Saros & Ullmark are Rentals = Pending Free Agents seeking huge new contracts that likely don’t, but could become boat anchors, just like Husso, Forsberg & Campbell have for DET, OTT & EDM. It’s amazing how change affects some Goalies
Best of Luck to NJD and all the Teams, but we know what we have in Markström and $6mil over a short-term contract is more ideal than having to commit long-term contracts for $8-12mil/yr till they’re 37-38 like Ullmark & Saros will be wanting and signing for
Sounds like Saros and the Predators are working hard on a contract extension, so he’s probably not even available

Pretty sure CAR would be happy to get Future Considerations, so they don’t have to buy him out to create more Cap Space, but I agree, he’s young and still has upside so would definitely be worth taking on
Canes have lots of guys to re-sign and Future Considerations is better than paying a 1st + Monahan like we did to clear enough space to sign Kadri. Reminds me of VGK dumping MAF & Pacioretty for nothing
Different situation, but former 3rd Overall Pick Dylan Strome was picked up for nothing in the end too

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>colby</b></div><div>why are u on this train of Markstrom being worth the same or even more then ullmark? hes a 34 yearold goalie who has a huge cap hit and hasnt had a good season in 2 years let alone an elite season. if ullmark is struggling to get the 10oa or holtz then what on earth makes u think a struggling aging goalie is worth more? lower ur expectations. ull get a first if u eat some cap and maybe a bad prospect.</div></div>
Markstrom & Ullmark are relatively equally skilled and matched statistically, but Markstrom come with an additional year term, whereas Ullmark is a Pending UFA set for a rich contract extension
Note: there’s more stats than just GAA & Sv% to compare and on that note, Ullmark’s haven so 💩 hot in the playoffs the last 2 seasons. I highly doubt any goalie who goes to NJD, especially Ullmark, does well given their weak & leaky d-corps
$6mil is less than the $8mil/yr Markstrom’s probably worth as bona fide elite 90-1A Goalie already
Eating Cap for 2 full seasons is night and day different than at the trade deadline with 20 games ~25% remaining in the season on an expiring contract. It’s huge $$$ out of pocket which is worth a ton in trade consideration alone
NJD should get Ulllmark if they can. Don’t matter to me, there’s 5-7 other teams in the goalie market, so I’m confident we’ll net a great return without retention or an amazing return with it

Take out the retention and swap Bastian for Bahl and Flames might consider it. Happy to swap Bastian for either Rooney or Duehr if they want too though. The preference would a Waivers Exempt Prospect over the 3rd as well. Would help to speed up the re-tool

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AWhiteOreo</b></div><div>COL is an underrated destination for Marky. They have few futures so it'll be tight but really they can compete with anyone in the league if healthy and can attract enough FA talent to make it work.
Other trades are more speculative of value. I probably undersold the Detroit trade but a second would likely get it done. They have a glut of bottom pair guys who can make the cap work as well.
As for Kuz, I think if he's really clicking you can have the conversation of retaining him, but if you can get a decent prospect and a pick for him it may be worth it. Big mistake would be giving him too much term and locking this core in. Ideally, you hope the younger guys take big steps and don't need to hang onto him long term. I also firmly believe Tig is coming home</div></div>
Flames have been looking for a Skilled Right Shot Scorer forever. Toffoli was decent, but older and much slower
I think the Flames can use his down season in VAN as leverage to sign a shorter contract with possibly a better cap hit too

Those are terrible trade proposals for CGY
Holtz is inconsistent and didn’t even make Team Sweden for the World Cup
Flames also only have 1 retention slot left till July 1st
Retaining for an entire season or two is way different than just the last 20 Games ~25% of the season on an expiring contract
