Rear Admiral is reporting that Sheldon Keefe will be the next head coach of the New Jersey Devils. Here are my thoughts about it (posted a few weeks ago)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>Not going to lie, I'm curious to see what it will be like in New Jersey if Keefe gets hired. He's a solid coach, but he leans a lot on low-maintainance 2 way guy. Really likes his defensive specialists. Has a harder time incorporating younger guys into the lineup and struggles hard with less than average skaters. There aren't a lot of David Kampfs or Alex Kerfoots on NJs roster.

I've got a feeling that Haula and Palat are in for good seasons if Keefe gets in. Holtz will not get the playing time he deserves, Clarke will be a scratch, Meier will suffer, and Siegenthaler - Marino is going to get a lot of ice time.

Really curious how his structure will apply to a team that can afford to have a deeper forward group. I think he is going to love that blue line</div></div>

Keefe has a hard time incorporating certain players into the lineup. He relies a lot on players with decent skating mechanics to get the puck up ice. Doesn't seem to be a big fan of controlled entries, played a lot of dump-and-chase in Toronto (which never worked due to toronto's lack of decent forecheckers). Loves his 4th lines. Seems like a solid dude in the locker room, but failed to maintain any kind of culture in Toronto. Also doesnt like attacking off the rush.

Curious to see how this unfolds for the Devils and I wish Sheldon nothing but the best

With today's McDonagh trade, Nashvilles apparent interest in Marner, and change reportedly coming in Toronto, the pieces seem to be falling in place for a Marner deal to materialize sooner than later. If a trade does happen, I would expect it to happen before the draft.

If Nashville is the team that Marner winds up on (seems like the perfect fit. Great city, Marner would fit in very well, and Brunettes system would give Mitch a ton of success), then I would personally pass on guys like Saros and Askarov. Woll is our guy, there is no need to get another goalie. Nashville also doesn't have a ton of defenseman that really interest me. Fabbro is a fine defender, but I don't even want to imagine a Marner deal that revolves around him.

I personally want young wingers. I know we are flush with talented young wingers, but outside of Knies and Cowan we really have no young impact players. A young center would be nice, but i feel like you can address that at this year's draft and just sign a guy like Stephenson to a Trocheck deal to act as a stopgap.

The guys I'm really interested in are Matthew Wood and Phillip Tomasino. Tomasino is a guy I have long praised and kept a close eye on. Since Domi has become the guy that feeds Matthews on a daily basis, Marners playmaking ability would likely be used on the second line. I think if we do trade Mitch and get Tomasino back, then Tomasino would absolutely crush his minutes on the second line. Such a smart and talented playmaker with some good skating and a solid motor. He would flourish in Toronto IMO, reminds me a bit of Robert Thomas.

Matthew Wood is the real gem I want from Nashville though. He is a huge winger with a cannon of a shot. Skating is a slight concern, but his big frame should really help with his movement. He was a guy I was really interested in leading up to last years draft, saw a lot of Tage Thompson comparisons thrown around. He checks all the boxes for what we are going for.

Nashville also has a ton of draft picks. They have all of their firsts for the foreseeable future, and have amassed a staggering amount of second round picks (a lot of which come from Tampa lmao).

I think Evangelista, Kemell, and Askarov are all untouchable. I know MTL had the opportunity to pick up Askarov last year, but I can't see Nashville moving him. Molendyk is another very interesting prospect to look out for, but LD is a bit of a log jam on the depth charts. Regardless, Nashville certainly has the pieces to entice me into a Marner deal. Much of my willingness to move on from Mitch hinders on how exactly we spend the additional cap space. If you can't utilize it effectively, just keep the guy. He isn't a slouch. Just my two cents though

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Without change we go no where. We basically are repeating the same thing we have seen year after year but this time Willy is joining the double digit boyz. Even if TOR gets a tad worse but progresses further in the playoffs or is able to create a more balanced team its progress. Considering how Marner has played these last few playoffs how worse can they get without him lul

This team above highlights why he or JT needs to go the B6 is awful and lets be real cannot afford both Montour and Roy unless both take discounts if Marner or JT sticks around. Hayton at 2c = NTU guy had 3 goals and 7 assists last season. If we all thought we had trouble scoring last playoffs this team's gonna surpass it.

We have built around these 4 guys every which way, they have gone through 3 coaches, 3 GM's when is it time for us to look at them lul. Van made changes, FLA made changes, VGK, AVS, DAL etc all have seen better success then we have playoff time thanks to changes.

You really think Brad wants another Gaudreau situation where he could have traded him rather than let him walk. And no extension should be off the table not in the mood for another bend over backwards Ferris beatdown

In the end through watching these guys since 2018-2019 4 guys in double digits is not a formula for success. I dont care for regular season achievements anymore. Look at EDM they getting that and more from their stars and this is even with ****ty goaltending. Tor we role into R1 and except for last year disappoint and create all kinds of excuses dodging the fact maybe this group isn't it or good enough to win it all

If Marner does not waive oh boy u make it clear fine we aint bringing you back and you go to the media and say "we wanted to move him he said no go talk to him". As we have no assets to spend 2025 TDL and not enough cap to address some key issues, and we should not be trying to extend him and JT no sir enough. The winds of change besides coaching need to start now

But anyways all the insiders believe big change is coming with many saying he's probs on his way out so let's see as coach is not enough</div></div>

Not going to argue about Marner and his impact because it'll just go in circles. There was already significant change this offseason in the form of Berube being hired. Also I managed to pretty easily put that roster together with Montour at 6m and Roy at 5.75m. We have a ton of cap space to deal with, and even more if we move on from guys like Jarnkrok and Kampf. Moving Marner makes zero sense unless it clearly makes us better. Freeing up cap space doesn't make us better. It gives us an opportunity to address some needs, but even at that you have to account for the cap you'd also be bringing in. I have little to no interest in trading Marner as a Leafs fan. Sure the spectacle of it all would be fun, but Marner is an important piece to this team.

Domi - Matthews - Nylander
Knies - Hayton - Marner
Holmberg - Tavares - McMann
Dewar - Cousins - Reaves

Rielly - Roy
McCabe - Montour
Benoit - Korczak

Woll
Stolarz

If you dont want to play reaves everyday, shift cousins to the wing and replace the 4C with Player X. Some candidates for Player X include: Zemgus Girgensons, Nathan Smith, Teddy Blueger, Pierre Edouard Bellemare, Steven Lorentz, Sam Gagner, Travis Boyd.

I know it's fun to make up Marner trades. It's always exciting when a team makes a blockbuster trade. I've had my fun making up some Marner mocks, but let's not kid ourselves; 9 time out of 10, the Leafs are a worse team by trading Marner. There are few, if any, fair trades for Mitch. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Marner is not a player you move just for the sake of moving. You don't trade a player of his caliber to send a message. The only way you trade him is if you are striking gold. Look at the Thunder when they traded PG to the Clippers, or the Raptors when they traded DeMar to the Spurs.

If I were the GM, I'd just play this season out. Move on from some of the supporting cast (ie Jarnkrok and Liljegren) and address the most glaring needs with our copious amount of cap space. See how this team looks under a more systematic and disciplined coach, and if that fails then no need to worry because Tavares' 11mil is coming off the books. Why rush into something that would make us so much worse? Why trade Mitch if we aren't getting full value? Marner is a core part of this team and is a highly coveted player. The grass isn't always greener folks.
