Being the best defenceman on the Leafs is not a high bar. He probably would be. But that doesn't make him a top 2 defenceman.

Apparently Marner wants out. It's just about finding the right fit. And Leafs will take back picks and prospects because they want the cap space to go shopping in free agency. That's the best course of action imo. Taking back salary would be a bad idea.

Understand that you don't have a choice, few teams can afford to take Marner on and still sign everyone else they want/need to. Fewer teams still will be in that position to take salary on AND be a contender that has interest in Marner (or a team Marner would waive for).

You will have to take salary back or you will have to retain if he's traded this summer. That's not something that's up for debate.

I prefer they retain. Even 3 million, making him an 8 million dollar player next year and increasing his value. I hope Treliving gets creative with the trade.

You must be thinking of someone else. Petterson is a top pairing shutdown D and the stats / data show that and the Pens wouldn't even trade him for Marner straight up
