If he's leaving, the Kings won't be expecting Spence to take over those minutes from him. Spence is a decent offensive defenseman, but he's not the defensive stalwart that Matt Roy is. The only way Spence is on this team next season is if the Kings want to give Clarke more time in the AHL.

A left-handed guy does not replace the need for a right-handed shutdown guy. If handedness mattered in any situation more than others, it would be on the PK where stick positioning is paramount.</div></div>

Gavrikov and Roy can both play shutdown roles, it isn't impossible for Gavrikov to return to that role while Spence moves up the line up.

If that doesn't work, Brodie has played effectively on both sides, he can play his role while allowing players to move up and take his role as RD2, to move him down to LD3 and mentor Clarke.

Spence was actually one of LAs few decent performers in the playoffs and actually moved up the lineup when it was required. In terms of a cheaper cost right shot defenseman, not sure LA could find a cheaper option with a still rising ceiling. After Blake has moved on from Faber, Walker, and Durzi. LA has finally depleted their large stock of right shot defensemen. Clarke and Spence would be a solid look into LAs future top-4 offensive defensemen as Doughty's career winds down. LA already has depth pieces in Englund and Moverare (one of which we won't send down). I think my viewpoint isn't LA looking to replace RD2, but get a LD3 who can move up to the PK as needed. (Similar to what Edler's role was)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>MTL literally has assets (that they could realistically move) at almost every single position (apart from maybe Center) that LA would be interested in. Matheson being one of them for sure. I think I agree with you though that they would be difficult trade partners. I don't see MTL wanting to move Matheson for just future assets (they still need vets on the team), which is why Danault would be my target. But obviously with LAK trying to contend, moving Danault is kind of counter-intuitive.

As for Danault being a LA guy now, you might be right. But I don't think he'd say no to a return to MTL. This was a reply a wrote in the thread where I did my trade suggestion for Danault:
"I think Danault would have zero issues coming back to MTL. He wanted to stay initially. The main reason he left was due to Bergevin and the bridges he burned with not believing he was a top 6 C, refusing to budge on the contract negotiations (Bergevin truly sucked a contracts...). Kind of ironic that Bergevin is in the LA organization lol"</div></div>

Matheson is essentially the same contract LA would give Roy if they could afford them. LA's cap woes is why below is probably how their defense will line up:

Anderson-Doughty
Gavrikov-Spence
$2M UFA (LD3)-Clarke

PLD playing poorly meant Danault took his role as 2C, if PLD wants it back he will have to take it from him, and even then LA will need Danault for his PK abilities and that Moore and FIala play great with him.
In terms of guys LA is willing to move from it's more likely: Lizotte, Grundstrom level guys. LA needs Danault with Kopitar set to retire in a few years, probably the least likely player LA would move on from.
