Maybe and maybe not. This off season is going to be interesting for goalies as we see multiple teams have problems with goalie stability. Ottawa, Edmonton, Colorado, maybe Carolina, Toronto and NJ are all teams who could look at their team and say 'a stable goalie puts us into the playoffs/contention" and with that much demand comes a higher price.
Let's take a look at these teams
OTT: They are going to move Korpisalo to backup at $4m? Who is trading for him at this point? Maybe they'd like to, but too many moves would have to happen there, so I'd take them out.
EDM: They will probably have to move such expensive assets to dump Campbell it takes them out as having very valuable assets to then acquire an Ullmark. Maybe they are in on less expensive guys like Gustavsson, but I can't see how they dump Campbell and can go get a Ullmark or Saros.
Colorado: That Nichuskin issue is going to hurt that cap as they still can't over spend because he will be back during the season. They are going into cap hell, how are they dumping Georgiev and finding a way to squeeze in an expensive goalie
CAR: They would have to move Anderson first, could be the fall back prize for the EDM or COLs out there. Then they could go for a big prize like Ullmark, sure. This is a team that could be in the running.
Toronto: If Markstrom can't handle CGY, imagine him in TOR. If CGY ate half, sure, but would he be TOR's first choice?
Let's throw LAK in here too: Markstrom reportedly declined to waive to go there. A Byfield extension will take away a good chunk of cap room, but they can be in for a mid-tier goalie.
Goalies likely out there: Markstrom, Ullmark, Gustavsson, Knight (I can't see how FLA survives the cap squeeze with him making as much as he does), Gibson, Jarry, Merzlinkins, and then if as stated early CAR moves out a goalie to get Ullmark, then Anderson is out there. Do all those teams have to move goalies? No, but time is ticking on any value and some of those teams like ANA with Gibson aren't getting any better with him, his backup outplayed him.
So how many teams really would be in on Markstrom that he would command such a price? Not many by my count.
