Description
Three way trade. New Jersey gets their starting goalie, Calgary moves up to guarantee Iginla and Montreal gets to take multiple shots at landing a dynamic forward.

If Demidov and Lindstrom are gone by 5, could there be a three way trade?

Calgary- Gives up Markstrom and 9th overall = Gets 5th overall

New Jersey - Gives up 10th overall - Gets Markstrom and Winnipeg 1st

Montreal - Gives up 5th overall and Winnipeg 1st - Gets 9th and 10th overall

The only thing I don't know about in this trade is if NJ values a late 1st and Markstrom as worth the 10th overall but that's why I'm curious to see how this site likes it

A contender who didn't make the playoffs, because of how bad their goalies were. And NJ would only need a 4-6 dman wouldn't they? Don't see them needing to go after a top pairing LHD when you have Hughes

NJD should be looking for 20 minutes a night of a shutdown dman who kills penalties.

Hughes-Marino
Siegs-Hamilton
_____-Nemec

All pairings get 20 minutes a night. Played in different situations.

Yep. Vitek sucked. Good thing he is gone.

Kahkonen and Allen were good in NJD. Between them, Schmid and Daws you can get mediocre/quality goaltending. Then you build an elite dcore around it

If they would accept this, why wouldn’t they just accept it from the Flames themselves?

Maybe and maybe not. This off season is going to be interesting for goalies as we see multiple teams have problems with goalie stability. Ottawa, Edmonton, Colorado, maybe Carolina, Toronto and NJ are all teams who could look at their team and say 'a stable goalie puts us into the playoffs/contention" and with that much demand comes a higher price.

Let's take a look at these teams

OTT: They are going to move Korpisalo to backup at $4m? Who is trading for him at this point? Maybe they'd like to, but too many moves would have to happen there, so I'd take them out.
EDM: They will probably have to move such expensive assets to dump Campbell it takes them out as having very valuable assets to then acquire an Ullmark. Maybe they are in on less expensive guys like Gustavsson, but I can't see how they dump Campbell and can go get a Ullmark or Saros.
Colorado: That Nichuskin issue is going to hurt that cap as they still can't over spend because he will be back during the season. They are going into cap hell, how are they dumping Georgiev and finding a way to squeeze in an expensive goalie
CAR: They would have to move Anderson first, could be the fall back prize for the EDM or COLs out there. Then they could go for a big prize like Ullmark, sure. This is a team that could be in the running.
Toronto: If Markstrom can't handle CGY, imagine him in TOR. If CGY ate half, sure, but would he be TOR's first choice?
Let's throw LAK in here too: Markstrom reportedly declined to waive to go there. A Byfield extension will take away a good chunk of cap room, but they can be in for a mid-tier goalie.

Goalies likely out there: Markstrom, Ullmark, Gustavsson, Knight (I can't see how FLA survives the cap squeeze with him making as much as he does), Gibson, Jarry, Merzlinkins, and then if as stated early CAR moves out a goalie to get Ullmark, then Anderson is out there. Do all those teams have to move goalies? No, but time is ticking on any value and some of those teams like ANA with Gibson aren't getting any better with him, his backup outplayed him.

So how many teams really would be in on Markstrom that he would command such a price? Not many by my count.

NJD was a contender last year with elite defensive structure.

Dmen are much more reliable and predictable than 35 year old goalies. Would much rather target a great LHD to become elite defensively again than gamble on a 35 year old goalie who’s been sub .900 over the last 2 years

Just to add, Markstrom is fair at best at 6m. Teams don't give up good picks to trade for this type of goalie. There are lots of good UFA goalies this summer....cheaper than 6m and don't anything to acquire.

Haha, if NJ trades their 1st for Markstrom Calgary will be receiving it not Montreal. Montreal will not get 9 and 10 for 5 even if they offered to retain 50% on Markstrom.

NJ doesn't do Markstrom for 10th overall alone, MTL helps provide value by giving up their other 1st round pick. Calgary essentially gives up a goalie they're already trying to trade and 9th to move up four spots.

Calum Ritchie + the Avs 2024 1st for 50% retention and Calgary eating Georgiev's last year. Colorado would actually gain 400k in cap space.

Cool, I'd be glad to see that happen. Getting a 1st for eating Georgiev AND eating 50% on Markstrom can make sense, far more than straight up for a top 10 pick.
