<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>The Brits and Poland are definitely on the rise to varying degrees. Norway is another one that I really want to see take the next step. France and Italy are probably the most frustrating because if they cared more they could put together teams comparable to the Germans and Swiss. I don’t know why Estonia and Lithuania can’t follow Latvia’s example? Most of Europe could be at least competitive if the interest grows. As far as Asia goes, Japan would be great but if that was going to happen I think it would have followed the Nagano Olympics when the country went into love move with Hasek and Jagr.</div></div>
Yeah good call on Italy too. With the 2026 Olympics and some new arenas hopefully they'll get a bump up in interest and resources especially in Milan, Turin, and Northern Italy.

Latvia, Denmark, Norway, France, and Austria are getting more competitive they just need those couple of elite players or quality depth like Germany and Switzerland to have a cinderella type run in a tournament.
England, Poland, and Japan would be awesome countries for ice hockey too

I also just saw that the 3ice league is continuing again this year also. Too many "fringe" hockey leagues will certainly water down the demand and talent.

And in a way this was the Rangers issue in the past also. The teams that don't give up when they hit the wall are the ones that finally break thru. Sometimes it is just coaching/motivation and sometimes it is team construction/chemistry; most likely a strong cocktail of both.

Yet Leafs fandom want to break the bank to get RBA there when that was their same issue as a team; just exposed in round 1 regularly not rounds 2 & 3 like Carolina.

The Major League of Hockey could find a foothold with that type of financial backing but the gimmick of 3v3 and 24 minute games I think won't find as much of an audience for them as they think. Obviously this is geared towards a TV/streaming audience with that type of format.
I think they would be better served by doing a "real" hockey league with new rules implemented and 8 teams in North America in large non-NHL markets and 8 teams in Europe in the major markets there. They would attract better talent that way and probably engage more fans.

Not a Leafs fan. Quenneville is way too soon and that is too big of a profile market to do that.
Cooper, Sullivan, and Brind'amour are NOT going to TML. This is fantasy; Leafs just need to get over those guys.
Berube, Boudreau, Gallant, Evason, and maybe McLellan are the options

I think that they had success 2 years ago with a really well executed system of play. A "mid" roster but was deep and they could roll lines and everyone pretty much was interchangeable parts.
The flaw in that thinking is that once teams scouted and executed how to beat their system they became a lower mid team since they lacked the elite talent to adapt and make adjustments.
It was a great way to get competitive right away but it isn't going to get them into the next tier of teams. Big risk that they fall backwards, but Ron Francis is gambling they can get the right coach to take them to the next level without the elite talent.

Liligren is not gonna get to much. Guy didnt have a super great season and does not have a tonne of leverage see a 2 year 2.25m deal as rn he's a third pair guy who can do a bunch of little things but not excel at them. Basically Liligren got a Bear deal</div></div>
You might get Liljegren on 1 year at that AAV but if there is term it will be around $3m AAV. I dont see any reason to argue against this analysis: <a href="https://thehockeywriters.com/maple-leafs-predicting-rfa-defencemen-next-contract/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Predicting Maple Leafs’ Expiring RFA Defencemen’s Next Contracts</a>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>So I did the math.
Bertuzzi will probs get around 4.75m-5.5m and Domi 3-4m both on 5-6 year deals
TOR then has enough to bring in a 4-6m Dman (Roy, Demelo, etc.), Lybushkin at around 1.5m, and a 2m goalie to backup Woll
Its tricky but doable as they have seen some guys step up and graduate
Robertson, McMann (was hurt the series so who knows what we would have seen when healthy), Benoit, Dewar, Holmberg, etc.
Like man it sucks McMann got hurt as he was snakingly becoming a B6 weapon who could score off the rush or just drive the net</div></div>
I think Domi will get more, even as a low end 2C or as a 2nd line winger he is probably in the same range as Bertuzzi. His play down the stretch and in the playoffs has helped him alot.
Also, where did you value Liljegren?
I think there is only room to bring in 2 out of 3 of Domi, Bertuzzi, and a 1st pair RD.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Apparently per Friedman
Both Bertuzzi and Domi and the TML have mutual interest in a return
TOR is talking with McCabe on extension
Berube is the front runner for HC
Doing the math on if bringing those two back and doing other things is do able and getting what we want but yea its not bad so far.</div></div>
I can't see how much changes for TML if they don't add a high end top 4 RHD. With Pesce, Montour, Roy, Walker, and some others likely on the market they'll need between $5 and $7 million available in free agency; all of those re-signings would use up their cap space along with Liljegren RFA and goalie deals.
Their offense being only created from the top 6 forwards is the most predictable attack; if they got better transition and offense generated from their defense they would be a much more dangerous and consistent team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>If I were on the leafs board I would vote to give it one more go.
Worry about Marner/Tavares in 12 months. If one of those 2 approached and wanted out, would facilitate, otherwise, no.
With Utah’s existence; added buying pressure of available on ice talent as well as numerous teams looking for coaches, it is a bad offseason to voluntarily become a buyer of both. Everything is locked up, can focus on building a better team. Can deal with the headaches in a future friendlier environment. Maybe take a shot at a coach if there’s one guy that really moves the needle but if I didn’t get my guy I wouldn’t dump what I have for second best.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>I feel rn they have 2 plans
1. Ask either if they would be willing to waive
If yes then they make a move
If no on to plan B
2. Same **** build around them and see</div></div>
Yeah the coaching decision is the front and center (another HC let go before extension?)
Player wise there really is just a few things that can do to improve the team vs "change for change's sake".
Pick 1 UFA: Max Domi or Tyler Bertuzzi
#1 RD in Free Agency
Goalie (1A or 1B) in Free Agency
Beyond that it is coaching/execution/systems and the role of the youth movement: Knies, Quillan, Minten, Cowan, Grebyonkin, Niemela, Hildeby getting any meaningful roles in 2024-25.
Predicting/expecting anything major beyond that requires 2 or 3 "steps" to come together that are impossible to determine today at this stage

The sooner he gets to the NHL, the sooner Seider can be used more effectively and the team's overall defensive production will improve.
The left side of the future is pretty much: Edvinsson, Walman, Wallinder/Johansson they really need ASP to become a 2nd pair staple as soon as possible.

Great article on Avs usage of analytics. Pay wall but usually get a free view:
<a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/05/05/colorado-avalanche-analytics-success/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank"> How use of analytics is part of Colorado Avalanche’s secret sauce:</a>
For the Avs, it’s not just the quality of information they receive from the four-person analytics staff, but how it gets communicated and circulated throughout the organization that helps maximize the franchise’s success.

Sure those also apply but it seems the main disagreement is how much is being offered to him. CAR really got to stop being so cheap its gonna really cost em.
With TOR being hungry for a cup and not having a big window, if they once again drop the ball Keefe's 100% gone and I could see a new coach super deal tying or beating the previous Babcock one
Like if TOR offered 10m x 5 years to him would be pretty stupid to reject dont yah think. Plus get to coach Matthews added bonus</div></div>
Not saying TOR wouldn't be a top contender either. It's just that "job security" is a top factor; and likely the roster construction/ development system. Treliving and his team; the scouts; etc would have to be aligned with Brind'Amour on philosophy. Not saying they arent; just saying that is more important than $; otherwise nobody is successful and everyone gets fired
