<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>Matthews is a great player, no argument here.
But what has he done in the playoffs? Or Willy? Or Tavares? Or Reilly? They’re all part of 1/21 PP. <strong>Are you arguing they would have helped solve the PK issues? </strong>

Your argument would hold more water if those guys were putting up Draisaitl numbers but they aren’t and haven’t.

No one has played great for the Leafs in the playoffs, this past year included. Kind of weird you’d focus all your frustrations on one guy only. But that’s what losing does - leads to irrational &amp; reactionary judgements.</div></div>

They 100% would have, that's my point...

Matthews and Rielly carried the Leafs through RD 1 vs Tampa... Matthews has also usually been at a PPG, above or near it in the playoffs (Out of his 8 years in the playoffs, only 2 series have been 2 pts or under a PPG, Marner's had 5/8)... That the frustration...

Then add in all of the clips of Marner not battling int he corners/back-checking, that never happens with Matthews, you never have a situation like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw-BoYhAdUM

or this: https://www.markerzone.com/news/index.php?no=366274

And especially not in the same playoffs

The add in a Leafs lineup looking like:

Bert-Matthews-Domi
Knies-JT-Willy
DeBrusk-Minten-McMann
Dewar-Kampf-Grebonkin
Reaves-Holmberg

Rielly-Pesce
McCabe-Montour
Brnoit-Lilly
Webber

Woll
Stolarz
Hildeby

This team is so much better than the one that lost in game 7, the depth is unreal and the defence is scary

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Or you know… Leafs still want to have a good regular season. Marner puts up another 90pts season because he’s a good regular season guy, disappears in the playoffs again. <strong>Flips the bird to a fan base that really treated like him like garbage for years</strong> (and probably even worse this upcoming season) , and gets a major payday with another team.

This really depends on if Shanahan and Treliving want to be the villains in this situation or vilify Marner instead.
<strong>They can scratch him until he agrees to a trade, hurt their reputation across the league for doing that kind of thing to a player.</strong>
Or they can be the white knights, a “do right by the player” and have the fanbase and Toronto media turn on Marner.

So I disagree that Marner has all the cards. Shanahan and Treliving can be pricks to force a trade. Just have to wait and see if they have the guts to do it…</div></div>

1. Leafs fans have been treating Marner like gold up until now, excuse after excuse as to why he underperforms when they need him most... When he needed a new contract, 10.9 for 6 years, walks straight to his age 27 year. He gets to play with Matthews on the 1rst line, controls PP1 and PK1, etc. The franchise has treated him like gold... He can never get criticized by management, etc. But the moment management thinks about trading him, he throw a fit...

2. I think most players and agents would understand why they are doing what they are doing. I think more players and agents would respect the Leafs less for bending over backwards for a player that doesn't deserve it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Honestly I hated the fact I had to say it as these guys be human beings to but man enough bending over backwards for these guys and while some are going why go for him over the others well Matthews and Willy just extended, JT will cost assets to move and has started a family here along with MR whose expecting and lets be real should be the next captain.

Like for Marner we dealt with this **** last time and from the looks of things were in for it again but worse

I dont want to hear all of next season

So is he staying and how much he getting, leaving in FA for nothing, or finally agreeing to get traded ?

Make a decision and stick to it

But for me personally you need to play that ugly game with him if you have to in order to move him as giving him 12.5m x 8 years does not solve anything besides okay guess were keeping him and once again...RUNNING IT BACK :scream</div></div>

It's ugly, but it's the only way he'll learn that TO won't give him everything he wants...

Just let him sit for "trade related reasons" and when he's ready to get dealt, as you go to him and say "You aren't playing any games this season for us, which will lower your value and other teams won't want to deal with this, or give us a list of team to get dealt to." And he or his agent will give a list...

As to why him; he's the worst in the playoffs out of the 5 with the exception of the hometown kid, whom could've gotten 13 in SJ, but signed here instead... Dubas signed the JT deal knowing these 2 year will suck, but it is what it is... He's been a pro at dealing with the media and as a leader with the rookie (him allowing Knies to stay with him comes to mind)... He's also not going to be asking for a ton of money on his next deal either

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>With all the injury dilemma's and health issues we saw last playoffs with him and the others I dont see him PKing

And I doubt Berube will trust a rookie in a big role considering this teams PK issues when Kerfoot and Holl left lul

We cant expect these guys to come in and take on a big role right off the bat. While Cowen had a good season with the Knights the NHL is a different more challenging landscape and to just thrust Cowen into the deep end to soon can cause issues fast

Best thing for TOR is to bring in some nice reasonably priced guys who can take on these responsibilities and let the prospects make their way slowly

Stenlund for instance would be a nice addition for the PK and can take faceoffs to</div></div>

I think it would be dumb not to have him there... He actually had his 1rst 80+ game season since his rookie year while playing PK, with the only game he missed was from ilness (from mulitple guys being in his home filming for the TV show, I'd have to imagine, considering he doesn't usually get this sick all the time)

I think Berube knows he has time to tinker with the lineup during the RS, so why not try Cowan with Matthews on PK2, what's the worst that can happen? Cowan not do well in G5 of the RS and gets pulled off?

I'm not expecting Cowan do be anything more than my expectation for Knies (i.e. just try to contribute every game, not on the Gs and As categories, but the small stuff like puck battles) IF he makes the team

Best thing TOR can do is get ELCs on their team (which would help with Grebonkin as 4RW with Reavo, Minten, Cowan, Niemela, giving Webber reps at 7D and Knies) look at all of the cup winning teams, you need bargain players... On top of those ELCs, you'll have McMann, Woll and Benoit making peanuts...

Trade Marner for more types of these players and draft picks and go from there... But Berube will get the most out of Cowan if he displays confidence in him, like London's done
