Leafs 2024 2025 Offseason Discussion Part 1: Kill or Be Killed
Okay so ideally our draft looks like:
23: Eiserman
27 (from CAR for Lily): Emery
5th rounder: Nichol

Gonna be honest. I have no concerns. Why would they have him at 3C for a 2nr overall pick. It didn't make sense for them to develop him there, and with his age and struggles having him on the wing would lighten that load. As he moves towards his prime I think we could have him at C long term

Pretending as though he's being traded without some idea of a contract extension seem far more silly, but I suppose we will see

They have Kopitar, PLD and Dannault. Where else would Byfield play?

Who's underrating Leafs? Byfield is a beast and is going to continue being a beast for many long years to come. There is no world where you can possibly think 1 year of Marner has more value than 5+ years of Byfield and Dubois</div></div>
1 time 55 point player vs a guy whos been at a 100 point pace for the last 4 years and is excellent defensively lmao. Marner has insane value and anyone pretending otherwise is being silly.
I obviously like Byfield but yeah, Marner is being vastly underrated. Besides we all know that wherever he ends up will almost certainly be where Mitch signs due to his NMC.

Also, you'd have to add something sweeter to the VAN trade. They'll take Lil, but need another roster player or ripe prospect to make it work.</div></div>
I don't see Hronek getting more than this. Frankly I think the Leafs are losing this trade (I'm a big Liljegren guy)

You guys have been searching for a RHD for awhile now. I think Lily is massively underrated atm and that you'd run away laughing once he got there.
21 mins a night against top competition, good analytics, #1 used by Keefe when defending a lead (and also when behind). People aren't paying attention to this guy
Getting him at low cost against the cap and a pick frankly could turn into highway robbery.
I'm kinda pissed that hes on the way out obviously, but nothing I can do about that

So uhh,
If the NHL playoffs end quickly, LA can buy out Dubois for 1/3 of his price (if it goes to 7 he costs 2/3s).
If they do that, theyll have tons of cap space.
Marner for Byfield 1 for 1.
Byfield gets 6-7.5 mil on a mid to long term deal to be our 3C and eventual 2C.
I think it makes sense

Just makes things easier and more even lul</div></div>
Induced demand affects cap space just as it affects everything else. Doesn't actually matter much

Leafs 2024 2025 Offseason Discussion Part 1: Kill or Be Killed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>I think it would be dumb not to have him there... He actually had his 1rst 80+ game season since his rookie year while playing PK, with the only game he missed was from ilness (from mulitple guys being in his home filming for the TV show, I'd have to imagine, considering he doesn't usually get this sick all the time)
I think Berube knows he has time to tinker with the lineup during the RS, so why not try Cowan with Matthews on PK2, what's the worst that can happen? Cowan not do well in G5 of the RS and gets pulled off?
I'm not expecting Cowan do be anything more than my expectation for Knies (i.e. just try to contribute every game, not on the Gs and As categories, but the small stuff like puck battles) IF he makes the team
Best thing TOR can do is get ELCs on their team (which would help with Grebonkin as 4RW with Reavo, Minten, Cowan, Niemela, giving Webber reps at 7D and Knies) look at all of the cup winning teams, you need bargain players... On top of those ELCs, you'll have McMann, Woll and Benoit making peanuts...
Trade Marner for more types of these players and draft picks and go from there... But Berube will get the most out of Cowan if he displays confidence in him, like London's done</div></div>
I think if Cowan gets 13-15 mins a night in the top 6 he can get us 30-50 points (call it 40). He's a playmaker, so putting him in the Domi spot with Matthews makes a lot of sense I think

This entire thread is about how that return would be bad, and I'm saying that would be an excellent return.

If no one makes a decent offer for Ullmark
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Primarily because great goalies generally don’t get traded unless there are cap reasons pushing it. There are only a few examples recently where that wasn’t the case and most provided atleast a late first rounder in terms of return.
I don’t use the two Taylor Hall deals as a mechanism that forwards are cheap now. Both had drivers behind them, but that doesn’t stop this narrative that goalies are “cheap”
3 of the last 4 has outstanding goalies and we saw how bad goaltending just neutered some up and coming teams.
What the original poster said was pretty accurate. Ullmark likely will provide more value to the team this year than the first round pick will over the next 8. Most late first rounders turn into fringe AHL players. The primary value for trading him next year is probably the player they sign with that money.
For cap health, it probably does make sense that his $5M be an expiring.</div></div>
Justify it all you want, but you are going to joining the many people who somehow get shocked when goalies don't get huge returns if he gets moved. It happens every time, so don't feel too bad about yourself

Thats fine thinking picks don't help you, but you have the goalie market completely off value wise.
Yes, for a player like Ullmark, getting a 1st would be an excellent return.
I don't know why people always overestimate what goalies return - they never get very much

Yeah the lists are a bit out of date. That's a first rounder. Pronman has him mocked to STL at 16.
Which speaking of, thinking we could probably pick up another 1st from CAR. They have 27 (Sandin got 28) and we know Lily would be a real Canes guy. Plus they're losing 2 expensive D and need to replace the spot.
Grab a guy like EJ Emery at 27 (6'3 RH DFD)

The more I think about it, the more I think that Seth Jones is this generations Dion Phaneuf.
Solid 2nd pair D getting paid #1 money.
Blackhawks fans are totally delusional about his value on here but I wonder what a Dion Phaneuf esq trade would look like for us to acquire Jones.
Man I'm just looking at Chicago's roster, they have so many bad contracts that need to be half retained in order to get moved. Just awful management over there.
Foligno, Dickenson, AA, Mrazek, etc
Also I've mentioned this before but I'd totally bring back Connor Brown on a league min deal next year
Also, William Nicholl might be worth a flyer with one of our 5th or 7th round picks. Upside bet like Julien was for the Jets last year

In terms of Jones, not really?
Dom has him at +1 OF (54%) and +3 DF (72%)
Market value of 5.6aav. Like that is a solid 2nd pair Dman, especially on a team as bad as Chicago

Directly linked in rumours with Trev, which is why I have him included here.

We are about to re orient a lot of money towards the D core. We can do it with Jones at 7.5. It basically puts a cap on our D at 7.5 aav.
Stepping into Trev's shoes, I'm thinking something like:
Mo-Roy
Zadorov-Jones
Benny-McCabe
Raifai
