Unexpected offseason part 2

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SLAFGOATSKY</b></div><div>Columbus are rebuilding too. They don't need to trade low on Kent Johnson.</div></div>
Nailed it. CBJ absolutely don’t do this. Great rookie year, sophomore slump - nothing concerning, and still see him as a T6 staple in the future.
If he’s unhappy, it’s news to everyone. Even if he was, he doesn’t have a resume that warrants him demanding a trade. Chalking a trade up to “Waddell is here” doesn’t feel like it has enough ground, and kind of lazy…
Basically, not happening.
MTL and CBJ are not good trade partners for most any players on either roster.

I like Liljegren, but we are packed on the blue line as-is. Can’t see CBJ making this trade.

Sounds like Elvis is getting another year; but, even then - CBJ can handle his buy-out no problem.

Very very very much not enough for Silly. Sophomore slump, but had a fantastic rebound year. CBJ see big things for his future. 220 NHL games under his belt for a kid who *just* turned 21.
There really isn’t a fit with MTL as a trade partner.

Laine Kakko Centered by Dach
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoomerTheHero</b></div><div>Jackets easily pass. The 1st round pick swap alone is enough for the jackets to immediately decline it, especially considering the most valuable asset you are sending for Laine is a late 1st. <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ross_Johnston</b></div><div>Gotta think CBJ takes that. Move down one spot and get a haul</div></div>
I mean, if CBJ aren’t super sold on whoever is available at 4OA and can still get their guy at 5OA? It’s close.
But yes - the issue is we need to clear out roster spots before we start filling them up. This would need to be made in conjunction with a few other moves - Provorov, Bean, Boqvist, maybe Olivier, Tex, Danforth?

So happy together
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>Honestly, when players go to player assistance, they often end up changing venues.
You have a new GM who may not want to keep him. He's quite overpaid for what he has brought so far.
I think he gets dealt and I suspect it will be for a value that will make most CBJ fans miserable.
You can always feel good about the fact that at least you're not paying PLD for the next 7 years ...</div></div>
I think the connection between Player Assistance and moving teams isn’t as direct - when and why players go into it is the epitome of case-by-case. I’d also be very hesitant to make generalizations considering we don’t know exactly why he entered it, and what his situation is.
He probably does get dealt, because he doesn’t fit our timeline, and we’ve got some young guns who could use his roster spot. Outside of some fluke injuries and his NHLPAP stay, he’s actually been quite good.
Maybe he does get moved for Pennie’s on the dollar, but the incentive to make that move now is minimal, unless he comes out of NHLPAP demanding a trade. There’s nothing to lose with seeing if he can come back, rebound, and build-up his value.
Even then - CBJ need to do more roster trimming than adding. Harris and Dvorak don’t do much for us, so the bigger incentive would probably be mover futures, or a single useful piece instead a couple of less-than-useful ones.
That being said - yes. At the end of it, at least we don’t have to deal with PLD’s toxicity. It was a bad trade made under duress at the time.

CBJ very much pass, for the exact reason you outlined.
Laine is an incredibly skilled player who we have no need to trade. Why would we do so at his lowest value for a depth D, an overpaid, unnecessary C who is a cap-dump, and a late 1st?

Elvis at half retained + Husso's full hit is going to need more than a 4th. Either a 2nd or a 3rd + B prospect.

I definitely think he's the strongest asset here, and I would not be upset to pass on this trade.
That being said, idk...you're looking at two guys with one breakout season to their resume. Difference is Chinny's was last season, Kaako's was two seasons ago. If Waddell thinks Kaako can find another gear in a different situation, and add a first and some lottery tickets to it, I could see the work on it.
Of course Chinny scores 30 goals playing with Panarin.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CowanDeBrabarian</b></div><div>Hronek won't get you all three... dreaming. Boqvuist and Johnson but VAN send at least a 2nd back </div></div>
Love seeing this from a VAN fan! And checks out from CBJ.
You’re getting a cost-controlled, young, T6 W with PPG upside. Add in a flyer on an offensively-talented D who has the injury bug, and VAN is making out pretty well if they are content on moving from Hronek.
Still not sure CBJ do this. We already have Severson eating term, cap, and space on the right side, and Jiricek is going to deserve to get T4 minutes sooner rather than later, most likely. Z has the left side locked down, with Mateychuk in a similar spot as Jiricek there. Add in the potential top-D we could get at 4OA.
On top of all that, I’m just not a fan of sign-and-trade swings for a rebuilding team like CBJ. Too many variables that can change the value of a guy like Hronek, who built up his worth playing on a much better VAN squad.

CBJ need KJ's T6 potential more than they need a Cernak.
Even then, TBL would have to add. Considering they are still going to be a late-1st/low-end prospect team for a few years, not sure what kind of package they could even make avaialble.

CBJ would need more going to them. IM is a depth piece we don't need, VP is a rehab project we don't want.
VAN is the one gaining $3M in cap space in order to go against the ceiling.
