Logical offseason

Created by: fangm
Team: 2024-25 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: May 3, 2024
Published: May 3, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As someone who works in the game I feel that a lot of people here don't appreciate the business side. Utah NEEDS to trade some futures for stars because hockey doesn't survive in non-traditional markets if teams are bad from the start. They need a chance to build their market before they can afford to lose. This is why the NHl is so generous in expansion drafts and why teams like Vegas and Seattle push for the short term.

  1. Zegras, Trevor
Additional Details:
Anaheim gets some wingers which makes a Vatrano trade easier. Durzi fills the top 4 RHD hole they have for years to come.

Trade also makes sense because as younger players on Anaheim develop they can always move Schmaltz and Crouse and recoup future draft capital.

ARI
  1. Liljegren, Timothy [RFA Rights]
  2. Marner, Mitchell

Utah would attach themselves to there guy Cooley? Wouldn’t it be better to just create from within, former blues executive building a team doesn’t include that many soft players, marner/zegras would not have a home on a rough and tough team first team. Just an opinion, homerun swing could possibly come through free agency and add a guentzel/Reinhart not quite the 1c of a zegras, but just cost cap and term and not assets.

I get the premise of the ACGM team here. I am not sure if this is a good path for Utah/AZ. Both players have the skill but worry me as people you want as face of the franchise types.

Not sure Marner would "fit" in Utah. He has shown significant ego over the years that I think would get in the way. He has also shown that he will pout and throw fits and that is not conductive as a face of the franchise.

Zegras is a very interesting, super high skilled player. I question if he is mentally tough enough for the NHL or if he has the drive to relentlessly train that is critical for sustained high level success. He could fizzle and be a drain on a franchise that cannot afford one.

What has Seattle done exactly to push for the short term?

Trade returns are ridiculous- too much for Zegras and not enough for Marner & Minten + Lili . Plus Leafs would want nhl players not prospects or picks; anaheim the opposite.having said all that - zero chance Marner waives for Utah
