If I thought we could sign marner for a reasonable extension id do that. Tanev and perron get more, Raymond probably too.

it was so tough structuring around marners current cap hit some players had to receive less lol

Don't think this deal makes sense for either side. The value going to Toronto is mediocre for the calibre of player being moved and Detroit would really struggle to afford to retain Marner past his one year. On top of that I don't think Marner would have much interest in waiving to go to Detroit unless a lucrative extension was attached to his move.

Yeah I could tell you were shaving dollars to make it work. I know he's the current Toronto whipping boy but marner is ultra talented and love him here.

same here! taxes are high in toronto so his next contract aav might not be as high as people believe, if he leaves toronto, but still assume around $10mil+ for sure

How is this offer mediocre? what better offer would the leafs get anywhere else? you have a talented player that wont re-sign with your current team, the player has control of the trade destination or let him walk in UFA. Wings can offer an extension upon trade, if cap is tight Steve will make it work better than I attempted.

Part of the problem is, even with Matthews being the big target, Toronto's still a good market for a star player with sponsorships included.

It's a bunch of question marks for a sure thing really. Buchelnikov is an intriguing prospect for sure but he's small 2nd rounder and hasn't played on North American ice yet. And while Detroit does have a great system of prospects, he's not exactly the teams cream of the crop.

As for Berggren, what is there to say other than he's a huge question mark. He'll be 24 next season and he wasn't an NHL regular on a non-playoff team. The Leafs have bottom six contributors presumably coming up next season, can't see why they would view Berggren as anything other than a player that trys to fight for a full-time roster spot out of camp.

And as I said earlier, Marner would probably not waive to play in Detroit unless there is an extension in place, so with that extension in place, he's gonna be worth more than this offer without a doubt.
