Thanks for keeping it polite. I'm just mocking up some trade concepts, if Armstrong can strongarm (:halo) some better returns then I'd be all for it.

See this is the key point for me. And I know the FO is factoring in revenue, ticket sales, team morale, etc. during the retool, so I get where they're coming from. I just worry they're not doing enough to really turn a corner. If they think they can land a no.1 defenseman with pick 16 or fill that hole with 7 years of big money handed to a 28 yr old free agent, they are playing a much riskier game than they think. Sometimes you gotta ride the wave, up-down-up. If they pick a guy at 16 this year and again next year in a similar draft slot, and then think the retool is done and it's time to buy a couple FAs and make a push, it will not go very well. I don't want them to trade away the core players and sit at the bottom of the league forever, I just want 1-2 years of committing to it (i.e. trading guys that can speed up the process).

Only guy that would apply to here is Dvorsky and I'd be happy with him in the AHL for a season. 21 yr old Nathan Mackinnon played 20 min per night for 82 games on a team that went 22-56-4 (48 points). The next season they went 43-30-9 (95 points). A bad season that garnered a top pick would not ruin the franchise, I disagree with that line of thinking.

Yeah they're trying to do a difficult thing - trying to build a future roster without saying "rebuild" out loud or hitting rock bottom - but I think you can justify dealing #89 and #50 as part of a re-tool. They're not core players in the 2027-2030 window that is more or less written on the wall. Armstrong should be stressing to the fans that he's going to ensure that the prime of Thomas and Kyrou isn't going to be wasted in a long rebuild. Instead he's saying "yeah I could trade my 4 best players and be bad until 2035" which is just maddening. Nobody is asking for that. We simply want a couple more high end pieces to be ready when it's time to really push. Those pieces are gonna be really hard to find if your ammunition is 16oa picks and free agent contracts.

About your title, do we think they've already got something in the works?

Just to play Devil's Advocate on Binnington... this is probably the first offseason since signing this contract that his trade value will be significant/positive. He was trending in the wrong direction for the last few years. I'm sure there is an argument to be made that his numbers were sewered by a bad team in front of him, but reality is that right now may be the best time to shop him. And with the Blues a few years away from competing, why would he be untouchable? To be honest I would've liked to see Buch and Binner traded last deadline. Considering the buyer's market that developed, it's understandable that they're still here but for me they are the obvious pieces to move in any effort to re-tool. They have the most trade value, a large impact on whether the team is bottom third or middle third in the standings, and the least importance to a 2026-and-beyond roster.

Moving out Krug is the prerequisite to essentially any offseason movement - for the roster spot and the cap money. He probably doesn’t waive to anywhere that would take him. And I don’t think he gets bought out yet, maybe next summer. That’s why I think this offseason will be a quiet one for the Blues. Not a bad thing, just wish they would’ve bottomed out a little harder for these years.

It's usually a dead giveaway by how slanted the trade is one way or the other. I've seen people give him up for nothing and I've seen him traded for a team's 3 best assets. The fact is, I doubt it ever goes further than Treliving asking him to waive the NMC. And if it does, that means Mitch picks where he's going, and that won't be a fun trade for Leafs Land. If he's a nice guy (no evidence from past dealings) he'll give them a list that has more than one destination but we'll see.
