not too crazy
I would imagine Ullmark blocks the trade to Toronto.
Bert is likely staying in Toronto, he grew up a Leafs fan, there is mutual interest there, and he never really wanted to be in Boston, don’t see him signing here even if Leafs don’t sign him, much rather have Debrusk back of the two.
That Zadorov contract is rough.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>Not that I think this trade would happen, but who does Boston select with that pick? Catton to get centre depth if available?</div></div>
Eiserman, Catton, Parekh would likely be the options at 10.
However, the most Sweeney thing to do would be to bypass those guys for a the smallest, best skating defenseman he can find. Cole Hutson. 🤣🙄

Why it wont be 10th for Ullmark
I don’t think anyone in their right mind thinks NJ gives up the 10th overall for Ullmark straight up.
I never thought they’d even consider it until Fitz brought it up.
If it were to happen it would be more something like Boston 25 1st/Ully for NJ 24 1st/Dawes or Schmid. Possibly other pieces involved as well.
Personally i have maintained the NJ 25 1st with top 15 protection gets the deal done on both sides.
I highly doubt Ullmark blocked a trade to NJ. I heard he blocked a trade to Ottawa last offseason. I heard Boston turned down NJ offer. 🤷🏻♂️
I think Gustavson from Minnesota is their preferred target at this point but they will have competition for him.

Ullmark Necas GeekieFrederic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ethanwinters</b></div><div>I know it’s your thing is to be on here 22 hours a day, throw similar snark at all proposals and not offer up any unique ideas…so I have learned to not bother engaging.
But for the amount of time you spend in here I’m surprised that you don’t know how to read the descriptions or think of alternate line combo. Is it extremely possible he freewheels too much to be in the middle defensively? Sure. Could his ability to drive play through center ice make up for it? Maybe. Does it particularly matter, in the end, if you are running
Marchessault Zacha Pastrnak
Or
Pasta Zacha Necas
Or
Zacha Necas Pasta
No.
As far as value goes, Frederic and Geekie are both 40 point 3rd liners. Heinen right there, too. Coyle often just a hair above that. All playing fairly similar “board battle, puck control and smart plays” kind of games. It’s redundant in Boston and unique on the Devils. And you ain’t giving both Frederic and Geekie their raises after next season, either. Lysell is a middle six one way winger prospect. It’s not like he is some unique diamond. A good player potentially. But on a team trying to break in Poitras and maybe even Merkulov, where does he fit? They ain’t running two rookies on a line. With Carolina’s turnover and style of play, he would get a much better chance there. Trades are about finding fits for both sides that make both sides better. Frankly, the hole in this offer is convincing Carolina that they want to take a high pick instead of a player in the deal, not the value to Boston in the slightest.</div></div>
The 10th overall + Lysell or Geekie is fair value for Necas.
Adding the cost to acquire the 10th to the mix is not. He’s not that guy.
If you manage to go out and get the 10th overall you are much better off targeting Drai, or just keeping it and use the cap to add Stephenson or re-sign Debrusk whose value is quite similar to Necas. Necas is a better creator, Debrusk much better defensively.
Having the 10th overall (Eiserman, Parekh, Catton) + the free agent signing is far more valuable than Necas. Who likely ends up playing the same role in Boston that he is unhappy with in Carolina.

True, but i was talking player attribute wise, 1 for 1 is fair. But Boston is not doing it, for exactly the reasons you stated.

They are not bumping Coyle to wing for Necas to begin with so there is that, and now you are back to square one with him pouting and sulking and wanting out for the same reasons he wants out of Carolina.

He’s not center because he can’t win a faceoff and his defense is not good enough.
The league is full of wings that were drafted as centers but did not have enough ability to do it at the NHL level.
I’m not against trying it, but you better have a backup plan when it fails.

a different approach
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>The single biggest risk to his long term earning potential is him ending up on a bad team. Same as last year.
Unlike last year, that question can be answered with an extension and I believe that is a bigger part of the equation than some are laying out.
1. They are in the right time zone
2. They are an easier city to get home to than many options
Sure, they have the tax disadvantage compared to other markets, but that’s like a 5% premium in salary
The real question is whether he believes the team can be competitive. To me, they are undifferentiated from the Buffalo’s, New Jersey’s of the world. Good young talent, but haven’t shown they can win consistently.
Maybe it’s a full stop. Maybe he’s willing to retire and go to the Swedish league / not play for a generational wealth contract. I doubt that, but nothing would surprise me here.</div></div>
Not really, the single biggest risk to his long term earning potential is injury.
If he ends up on bad team/porous D this year than goes UFA will that be held against him or do teams understand the situation. 🤷🏻♂️
However he only has one big contract left, and it is not going to be 6+ year deal. I doubt teams are going to go beyond 4 years on extension or in UFA.
He likely has 3 or 4 years left of his prime and max $. After that it will be year to year for backup $.

That is true, but Ottawa tried last offseason, guess why it didn’t happen.
Sens desperately needed a goalie. B’s wanted that cap space. Sens were really the only team in market for a goalie that could take his entire cap hit, had plenty of pieces to make it work. Just one problem…
He has stated his preference is to stay in Boston and, quote, “the teams on the list are on there for a reason”
Does that sound like someone who waives?
It will take a significant incentive, or they go to him with a trade in place with a team not on his list, and say here are the other teams still interested, are you willing to waive for any of them now that a trade is inevitable.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Ottawa with an extension (5% premium to accommodate tax differences) and NMC rights could be just as appealing as NJD without an extension. Both teams struggled badly, but have some premium young talent on it, I’d argue that Ottawa’s defensive structure could be better suited to a strong defensive option.
I would think Boston would prefer to trade him out of the Atlantic all things equal which is why I focused on Jersey to begin with. As long as teams don’t over inflate their leverage, a deal should and could be done there</div></div>
For all we know he plays out the year and goes back to Sweden to play. 🤷🏻♂️.
He was considering it when he was in Buffalo.
Depending on what happens politically here it might even be the preferred option, lol.
Better quality of life and being close to family is no longer a concern.
I don’t believe an extension where he does not want to be is the solution.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SensFan40</b></div><div>Ottawa being bad was due to Melnyk and his cost cutting - that's already being worked on and lots of progress made. It may not be the most attractive, but since we know he wants to be in the east part of the country it's not a stretch that he would rather go there and sign an extension over going to LA. He just may not have many options and staying in Boston is probably less attractive than going to Ottawa.</div></div>
He has already stated his preference is to stay in Boston.
And no, when it comes to least desirable places to play, it’s location, location, location,
Take the best run org in the world and put them in Winnipeg, nobody wants to play there still. Take the worst run org and put them in Miami or Vegas, everyone wants to play there still.
That is just reality. There are always going to be cities no matter how good the org is, are just not desired destinations.

That’s the point. They trade for exclusive rights and offer 5/6 years at 6.5/7.5m, he just waits to see the other offers and you wasted your assets.
If not offering him 8, and hell no, there is no point. Other options .

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>I doubt it takes a “ridiculous” extension. If it is around market for good years and has an NMC, I can easily see him taking it. Ullmark craves stability and Boston is going to be the least stable of his options.
The rumor was a three way deal between Ottawa, Detroit, and Boston involving the 17th pick. Boston was targeting Oliver Moore, but Detroit decided to wait on acquiring DeBrincat once they saw the draft board.
The Ottawa deal seems pretty simple in terms of contract and players, getting Ullmark to waive will be the difficult thing. If it’s a player involved, I believe it is Chychrun</div></div>
Between Ottawa being one of the least desirable places to play according to player polls year in and year out. The tax structure. The compete level. It’s going to take some serious incentive for him to waive.
I was hoping like hell to make a draft day move to get Moore. But it was just that, hope.
Hawks have some interesting secondary pieces, a couple of them for Ully would work, but Ullmark surely does not fit their window. Mrazek is signed to be the placeholder til Commesso/Gajan ready. I don’t see a fit there even for a non-Moore deal.
