What does a Kid Line do for the team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>Minten can play in ahl so that’s a legit option, but Cowan can’t. He just dominated - won reg season & playoff OHL MVP; his development would be stunted if he were to go back to ohl. At minimum he breaks camp on team and gets a 9 game tryout - I think he sticks. You can shelter him on 3rd line with some games in press box when needed. Leafs need elc’s contributing and his skill set would be great addition</div></div>
I agree with most of that. My thinking is if he is sitting in the press, he should be in junior. Hopefully he makes the team and sticks. He looks awesome in the preseason and in Junior. I'd love to see him as a lock on the third line!

Why Is This A Bubble Playoff Team
Building a team through free agency never works and usually ends up wrecking your teams future. a lot of these FA are unlikely to sign with the sharks after the season they had. Also, a lot of the players you signed will get more years. Why would Roy sign that?

They are way off. teams don't usually bring in old play (unless you're Tampa lol). The leafs don't want Holl as he does not fit their style anymore. If Chariot is coming to Toronto, there has to be a lot of retention.

New Jersey just got Allen and really liked him. They won't be trading him. They will be targeting another goalie as they search for a strong tandem. That D looks shaky to me.

While Cowen and Minten look great! I think it is highly unlikely that both make the team. It is probably best for their development to stay off the roster anyway. Let them dominate where they are and then bring them in when they are ready to make an impact. Let them develop their game in a development league

BOS would never trade him for this... an unproven goalie prospect, a number 5-6 D, a 3rd line winger, a 2nd liner and a first 3 drafts away?</div></div>
I am excited for the day you get to see his return in a trade. With your value so high, your expectations can only be shattered

Could Woll be great? Sure. But you're also in a win now scenario and need a good goalie now to win. Woll isn't that guy NOW. Binner is.
Leafs will always face disappointment with that attitude, and frankly I love their misery.
I need a mug that says "Tears from Leafs Fans"</div></div>
Woll is a good goalie and when healthy is great. He was awesome in the playoffs. I won't go on since you love the misery. We differ on what the leafs need. Biiner is not worth Woll and a 1st

I totally agree that the time to trade him was last year but they messed that up. The thing now is. Do you want to pay him 11.5 million or move on. I want to move on and get what we can now. Even though his value is at a low. It beats letting him walk

Taking a crack at the Leafs
I appreciate the thought put into this post. I never thought of the leafs getting Husso.
I do not think the Marner trade works for a few reasons.
1. I do not think that Durzi is the type of player that Toronto needs
2. They already traded Durzi once
3. Unless they get significantly better on forward, they should target a defenseman
I did one a while back that had Crouse and Nick Schmaltz going to Toronto

Putting numbers on position for cap hit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WhoCares_ItsAFantasyGame</b></div><div>Exactly why I did this. As a Habs fan, when you see Gally and Anderson's contracts, you think they should be on the 2nd line producing.. But hell.. Bergevin screwed those amazingly. Everyone knew Gally was a core HABS player, but not at that price knowing his best days were behind him. Should've just given him a 2 year at 7.5M$ and this way you know he'll be there but if doesn't meet expectations, he can be extended for a very low salary or let go knowing you paid him for those last 4 years he gave you everything. They overpaid by 4 years with that 6 year deal.
If you find a GM that can balance his core player and replace those that are 3rd and 4th liners with lower contracts but give you more defensive style plays, then you have more money up front that you can attract actual top 3 players, then top 2 defense, and still get a good goaler. Your second line can be filled with hybrid grit/scorers/defenders.
Of course some players you can move up and down, such has a 1st overall pick like Bedard, his first three years he'll cost you nothing, so if you invest for 3 years in a bigger player, then you might look into paying a top winger and extra million to ensure he comes over, but still the balancing act is not easy for these GMs.</div></div>
I totally agree!
Anderson is a great player that is getting paid too much. pay him 3 million and everyone loves him!. The problem is, when you have a player who is getting paid to much, it limits your options. You end up with a 3rd line player playing on the top line because you are paying a 3rd line player like a 1st line player.
Imagine signing a free agent and being disappointed because they are getting paid too much to play so low in the lineup. You could hold your scouts accountable

Putting numbers on position for cap hit
I have often thought for years that teams need to have a cap hit for players based on their position in the lineup. Say if a player is on a ELC, then you would be getting great value and have extra money to spend on that line. I know lines change but normally not drastically.

The question in my mind is this. Does change make you better? I do not think you win a Marner trade straight up. I also do not think you win if you keep him

Worst off-season possible
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WN88</b></div><div>If you want to trace it to one move, it was the Tavares deal. Completely messed up the structure of the team on the ice and in the cap. Put insurmountable “win-now” pressure on a bunch of 20 year olds that weren’t ready. Worst part is we already had Nazem Kadri, who won a cup as a 2C. Not to mention we traded him for practically nothing.</div></div>
I completely agree. I did not like it at the time. It went from the future is bright to we need to win now. Kadri never would have been traded and it would have made negotiations so much easier if he wasn't there.

Interesting idea. Do you think the the Caps would be willing to retain any salary? That would make the trade more appealing. To take out a second and get him at 6 mill
