Probably Horrible But I mean what can we do
I'm starting to also wonder how attractive COL will be for FAs that aren't league minimum journeymen. If the selling point is "hey, come play for the Avs, at least until we have to dump you when Val or Landy comes back" then I don't know who would want to take that.

Val is eligible to come back Nov 15 and that's the earliest if he gets reinstated. His cap only kicks in when he gets back. Still, if he and Landy come back, that's a lot of players they have to dump. Players will know the situation and wonder if that is going to happen to them, so getting any free agents other than league minimum guys might be a challenge for COL.
I can't imagine CAR letting Chatfield walk and Duhaime isn't likely to sign for less than he made this season.

Mittelstadt, Duclair, and Zadorov will get more. Drouin is likely in that range. What happens if/when Val is reinstated and his cap hit comes back, though?

Ok, yeah, I get that, but I was figuring they'd just turn around and trade Garland.

Maybe if COL is open to having Val back. Things could change given how goood of a player he is, but if the Avs are ready to move on from him, why wouldn't they take a deal like this?

Dude's been a 50-point scorer for three years in a row. Someone will take him if he gets reinstated, especially if COL gives something to dump the contract or retains.

Possibility - Val seeks help in Russia
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>swissmontana</b></div><div>i don't think his NMC is the first concern here. For one, i don't know if you can loan a player like this.
but if you can, and if the cap doesn't count against you, I still feel like the NHL would make sure Nuke was not eligible to come back for the playoffs in that same season. It makes Vegas' cap circumvention look like nothing.
IF and only IF any of that is true, then yes, I guess Nuke could waive his NMC to play abroad.</div></div>
Agreed. I was thinking more along the lines of him being loaned until a longer-term solution was found. Even if the NHL allows Val to come back for the playoffs, it sounds like the locker room has moved on.

I don't think COL considers this. Overall, I think they're just as happy to roll with Georgiev and Annunen at least one more year. Malinski fits well, we probably have to try and move Manson or Girard for cap room, and we'll be needing to save money.

Even with a hometown discount, that's probably low for Drouin. Also, probably too low for Trenin.
What happens if Nuke is reinstated?

What makes you think he's not nhl ready?
Look at all the 1st rd players jump from juniors to nhl.</div></div>
From what I've seen (which I have to admit is a lot of clips and some analyst breakdowns, not full games), his game is much more speed/finesse. That works in the OHL, but he'll need to get prepared somehow for a much more physical style to center an NHL second line. My worry, though, is he won't get that in another year of OHL where he's already able to play to his comfort level. Maybe he gets that thrown into the 3C role with the Avs, but the style needed for 3C is different than that of 2C, so I don't know if he gets developed real well in the NHL without a little more seasoning. Just IMO, I wish we could get him one year at the AHL next year, then move him up.

I think Ritchie stays in OHL one more year. He's not ready for a 2C role, and I don't think he's a great fit for 3rd or 4th line use.

Take it from an Avs fan, Ryjo doesn't seem to have much left. If your third line likes to play with some speed and consistent pressure, he's not your guy.

Lol. 1st favorite team is Canucks. 2nd is the Wild. Joined CF two days ago and has made like 20+ ACGMS, mostly for teams not named Canucks or Wild. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Agreed. The depth goalies available aren't terribly different from one another. IMO, why waste an asset if Raanta is sitting there? But, if that was the route Avs' are taking, why haven't they claimed him already?

One Last Hockey Trade
Wood was brought in for a reason. Just like the Duhaime/Trenin moves. High motor guys to be pests to play against come playoff time. They'll see who fits best through this season. If it's not Wood, I don't think he'll be hard to move in the offseason, but it will be at a fairly low value due to the term.

Goodmorning
At this point, I would think the Avs' focus would have to be goalie and maybe depth D, but what do I know? The Trenin and Duhaime moves already create a "who do you play" situation, even as the moves have allowed for great depth. To think guys like Wood and Duhaime could be scratched is crazy to me. Why bring in guys who cause chaos, add toughness, and are pains to play against just to scratch them, but it's a good problem to have.

Well well well
I have to think G and/or D depth yet. D is probably least likely as Malinski and Jones have done well coming up. Georgiev has been playing relatively well, but his tendency to let the first or second shot of the game in for a goal has to get cleaned up in the playoffs. Annunen has looked solid, but do you roll with him/Prosvetov. There is cap space. Might as well use it.

I have to say, with everything going on in the last 24 hours of the TDL, seeing an ACGM totally focused on a 1 for 1 swap of middling prospects was kinda crazy. That's dedication.

I think we're better off with Mitts, though I'm taking the optimistic view that we'll be able to extend him. It sounds like Cmac definitely sees Mitts as a longer-term guy. I don't know why, but I was always nervous about the Avs and Henrique. I don't see him putting any team over the top this year and I wasn't thrilled to think about keeping him around longer. Probably totally wrong and he'll be lifting the cup as an Oiler.

Fitting the new guys in
I think you could get Mitts in for that (don't know about the right term length). The most recent contracts to compare from a basic stats perspective would be Eriksson Ek and McCann. They're all around .5ppg players, with JEE and McCann being a bit more balanced between goals and assists and Mitts so far being higher on assists. They're all roughly same age when they got their current contracts and JEE and McCann are at $5.25M and $5M, respectively. So that's where it starts for Mitts.
Shorter term gives him the chance for another decent contract and I could see him in the $6M range. Plus, both McCann and JEE had a few more seasons of 50+ games played, perhaps showing slightly better durability.

Lets see
Mittelstadt has similar stats and is at a similar age as when McCann and Eriksson Ek signed their deals for $5-$5.25M. Mitts will probably start around there.
