I think Columbus would rather just keep Texier, to be honest. Jeannot is not clearly an upgrade or a defenseman, so no real reason to trade Texier for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>That's all very reasonable. If this was Columbus' offseason, I'd be stoked heading into next year.
Re: Cousins, though, He definitely is that, and Columbus <em>could </em>use more of those, but just not <em>him</em> IMO. Those types of players in regards to a Jenner, Gudbranson, Olivier, Kuraly to an extent, and even a Malatesta are great, but Cousins specifically I just don't have respect for. He regularly crosses the line and refuses to answer for it. Intending to injure other players and then never being held accountable isn't something I want to pretend to root for.
Re: Boqvist, I don't know that he has a ton of value right now. He's coming off a season where he was regularly injured (again) or scratched. I think he'd have more value if he can either prove he can stay healthy and be a contributor, or at least not have term left on a slightly expensive deal. Kind of like Laine: I don't think another year is going to drop his value more.</div></div>
I see your point and don't disagree at all regarding Cousins. I have really despised him on occassions, particulary during that game against Florida this season. I guess I figured that those tendencies could maybe be channeled in a different way on a different team, making Columbus harder to play against and being an instigator without aiming to injure specifically. It's not a hill I'm willing to die on, though.
With Boqvist, I guess his value stems from his potential more than anything.

Fixing the weak links
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>I'm a fan. I don't think you'll have a problem getting that return for Provorov + Danforth to a contender, and I really like using that capital to grab Hauge (stopgap 2LD, long-term 3LD?) and Karlsson (stopgap 1C until Fantilli takes it, stopgap 2C until Lindstrom/4OA is ready and his contract runs out?).
Elvis for Husso just makes sense, for both teams, at whatever retention/draft capital is necessary to make it work. I feel like each iteration of that trade is within the realm of possibility/acceptance. This seems like the sweet spot to me, too.
Only thing I'm going to b**** about: not at all a fan of Cousins, I don't want him anywhere near my team. For what it's worth, just throw Malatesta in there on the 4th line instead.
Also, I think Boqvist >> Blanks in terms of what they bring as a 7th D. I'd rather just keep him another year and see if he can bump up his trade value, or prove he can be a long-term depth option.</div></div>
Yeah, I thought of Karlsson as a short-term 1C and long-term 2C with defensive capabilities and a winning mentality. If they draft Lindstrom, he might not be a C at the NHL level, so it would be good to take some pressure off him. When Karlsson's contract runs out, Lindstrom (or whoever) would be a few seasons in and might be ready for that responsibility.
Regarding Cousins, i reasoned like this: he is a [vulgar word for the male organ as well as a pejorative term used to refer to a despicable or contemptible individual]. The Blue Jackets could use some more of those. I considered putting Malatesta on the 4th line, I think he's ready for that, but thought some more veteran presence wouldn't hurt.
With Mateychuk coming up, Hague would probably slot in to more of a third-pair defensive role long-term in this scenario. But it is also possible that Mateychuk can be placed on the right side when Gudbranson leaves, so the second pairing could be Hague/Mateychuk.
Also, I wouldn't mind keep Boqvist per se, but I think if they're just going to use him as a 7D, they're probably better off trading him now while he still has value.

I'd say Toronto will have to pay anyone to take on Tavares' contract. They sure as hell are not getting Ferraro for Tavares. Furthermore, the Sharks are a bad fit for Tavares. They are a rebuilding team and he is getting older, he'll want to win. The only reason he'd go to a rebuilding team is to get dealt with retention at the TDL. San José have no retention slots left. So it's a bad fit overall.

The only thing in Philadelphia that would remotely interest Columbus at that price is Michkov and that is, rightfully, not happening.
I don't see Boston being interested in rolling the dice on Merzlikins. They just need a safe back-up to Swayman.

And 24-25 doesn't matter. They have lots of cap space and no expectations of playoffs. In 25-26 the cap hit with $1.9M retention is $275,000 higher than a buyout. The rest of the way it's lower. A retained Merzlikins for Husso deal makes sense. I think the sweet spot is where it's a straight up trade.

The reports have been that he won't be a Blue Jacket next year due to off-ice issues, as I'm sure you know. There's more to this than the on-ice performance. As such, a trade with retention probably the best to hope for.

Re If Marner Waives
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>CBJ getting rid of Elvis has nothing to do with the fact that they aren't retaining on him.
A guy whining doesn't mean teams just swallow cap. That isn't how it works.
Marner has no need to sign an extension because he's traded. None. Get over that.</div></div>
First of all: I replied to you saying that they wouldn't move Merzlikins because of their goalie situation. Stop trying to move the goalposts. Second of all: yes, it absolutely does. Reports uniformly point to that they are going their separate ways due to off-ice issues. To get rid of him, they either trade him or buy him out. He has very low value right now, so if they trade him and don't retain, they are going to have to pay to do that. They can afford to retain on him and it's the best option cap-wise. You have offered absolutely zero arguments as to why they wouldn't want to retain on him in that scenario. You just say they won't do it. And that they won't get rid of him, contradicting all reporting done by people with actual connections to the Blue Jackets.
You are so far off with my motivations for making this ACGM that I'm not certain that you even read the short description above, let alone any of my replies to you. It would be amusing if it wasn't so tiresome. I have nothing to "get over." I am not even convinced that a Marner trade would be in Columbus' best interest. I never claimed that Marner <strong>has to</strong> sign an extension if he is traded. I am just saying that teams in general have very little reason to trade away assets in the off-season for a rental like Marner unless he extends with them. If he doesn't want to do it, they can just wait for him to get to free agency and not lose any assets for it. Teams have no obligation to trade for Marner just because Toronto want to get rid of him either.
It seems to me that you are not acting in good faith and are just being argumentative for the sake of it. So I'm just going to wish you a good day and sincerely hope that you have better things to do with your time than <a href="https://youtu.be/ohDB5gbtaEQ?si=RfW9m22ajUTBW7se" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">re-creating a Monty Python sketch</a> on the internet.

You are also over here assuming CBJ is buying out Elvis.
A team with no real organizational depth in net, in one of the worst goalie markets in years, isn't buying out a goalie.</div></div>
I don't see any team trading for Marner without getting an extension.
They will get rid of Merzlikins if the reasons are related to off-ice issues. Judging from the end of the season, I'd say Merzlikins has played his last game as a Blue Jacket.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>I'd classify this under "aggressive offseason", in which case it's probably one of my favorites...which means trade values likely skew Columbus' way. That's especially true on Marner, I think that's the max offer CBJ give, but it's also lower than where other teams would be willing to go.
I wouldn't change much. A lot of things have to go right (Fantilli taking a huge step, Laine bouncing back fully, Marner meshing well, Tarasov playing like he did at his peak last season, Nylander finding more magic in the tank, and basically half the bottom-6 developing), but it's not out of the question that this team pushes for a wildcard spot next year.</div></div>
It's optimistic, to say the least, if Marner is considered a good long-term target. What made it intriguing to me was Severson (who also has to waive) going the other way. I like Severson and he is underrated, but he is overpaid and it's going to be worse towards the end of the contract.
EDIT: And yes, if this was the team going into 2024-25, I'd be very optimistic with regards to them pushing for a wildcard spot. Marner may not be a preferred target of mine (mostly due to cap hit vs. effectiveness in the playoffs), but he is one hell of a player and in the right environment, he could very well be a lethal weapon.

They also aren't trading 21 yo Johnson for rental Marner. You can go off with your "valuation" all you want. But those are just facts.
No one is giving up anything close to that for rental Marner who want's a 12+ mil extension. It's laughable to think otherwise.</div></div>
If they retain $1.9M on Merzlikins instead of buying him out, it results in a cap hit that is $750,000 higher in 24-25, $275,000 higher in 25-26, $1,025,000 lower in 26-27 and $1,750,000 lower for the remaining three seasons of the buyout. CBJ are going to want to start competing from 2025 onwards. I don't see an organisation trying to win a Stanley Cup choosing a buyout over this scenario, where they give up no assets.
This, like all other non-Leafs centred Marner trades, assumes he extends.

They most certainly are retaining on Merzlikins, because it's better than a buyout from a cap perspective.
As for Johnson, I personally am not in favour of trading for Marner specifically, but Johnson's ceiling is probably a Marner-level type of player.

Columbus have no reason to move Texier unless they get a player that they need more in return. Even if they were looking to move him in exchange for a pick, I'd think they'd need a 2nd coming their way. Also, they'd get more than that as compensation from an offer sheet.
In summary: Columbus decline.

Look, Jenner is the heart and soul of Columbus. Ownership will probably never approve of trading him and he doesn't want to leave. There is something to be said for some sort of continuity and love for the team in the locker room. All in all, they have very little incentive save a chance at winning the Cup. Does this trade provide that? Probably not.
Having said that, I personally love Karlsson's game, so in the highly unlikely event that this were to happen, I'd support it. I suspect that I would probably be in a minority among Columbus fans, though.

Columbus definitely pass on that. Gaudreau had almost the same number of points as Tavares on a crappy low-scoring team and was tied for 12th in 5v5 primary assists in the entire league. He was basically the only high-quality forward in Columbus this past season, besides not being able to score on the breakaways.
