Or if the Leafs want more LTIR money to play with, put Backstrom in the deal and the Caps can move Oshie to their LTIR.

Unlikely But Not Unreasonable
The deal has to be done before the signing bonuses kick in.
Caps get an elite forward that they can afford due to Backstrom being on LTIR.
Leafs gain some good players and are free to possibly sign more depth by moving Oshie to LTIR for the '24-'25 season.

Seattle Gains Cap Room
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jamnjon</b></div><div>I don't feel like a condition requiring Seattle to reach the WCF in the next 2 years adds much value to a trade. We're talking about a team that finished sub-500 this year. I know they went on a run to game 7 of the 2nd round last year and anything can happen, but I feel like this season was a bit of regression to the mean and the likelihood that they reach the WCF is very slim.</div></div>
Regardless, I don't see the initial offer as being unfair to San Jose. They would get 2nd rounders and the contract keeps them above the floor when they're not likely to sign many FAs, even if they get the #1 pick.

Possibly a condition that one of the 2nds could become a 1st if Seattle reaches the WCF in 2025 or 2026.
Even without that, this trade isn't unreasonable.

Escaping Bad Contracts to Pursue FAs
Sharks take the full value of all three contracts.
Anderson's deal would cost a 1st & 2nd to unload, and Armia's & Dvorak's combined would require a 3rd & 6th as sweeteners.
Montreal not only frees up about $14 million to pursue FAs, but also has the option to sign or flip Zadina and can bury Knyzhov - just like SJ - at a cap hit of merely $100,000.

Calgary has no leverage. This is the best offer they're going to get with nearly every team being brushed up against the cap.
Essentially the Flames get two 2nds for Lindholm, two 2nds for Hanafin, and Mrazek & a 2nd for Vladar.
With all of them pretty much saying they want out, should Calgary really turn down FIVE 2nd rd picks for these three impending UFAs?

Nashville Accelerates the Rebuild
The 2025 1st is the later of the two.
The 2026 3rd becomes a 2nd if Nashville reaches the second round in either '24, '25, or '26.
San Jose's retention ($1.6m/yr) is essentially two league minimum players.

Murray joining Muzzin on LTIR combined with the Blackhawks retaining 20% of Johnson's salary gives the Leafs just under $1 million in space.
Toronto goes from no second-rounders for the next three drafts back to three.
Nylander may be compelled to re-up in Chicago long-term because of Bedard.

No Retention Required
For the '24-'25 season, the cap projects to increase by $4 mil.
Couple that with a majority of Chicago's buyouts/recaptures ending after '23-'24, the Blackhawks will still have plenty of cap to play with after acquiring EK65.
Zaitsev likely becomes a deadline flip for an additional future asset for the Sharks, and you can never have too many young centers (Luypen) in the pipeline.

Buffalo Bolsters Backend
I love how people think Calgary has any leverage here.
They need to fill a slew of roster spots and at present do not have the cap space to do so.
Teams are not going to help ease that burden with "fair market value" when cap space is at a premium.
Remember, Toffoli - a SEVENTY point scorer - went to the Devils for Sharangovich and a 3rd. He'll be a good fit for Calgary, but the Devils still won that deal by a wide margin.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Dream on...
That's fine for Vladar alone with retention but it's nowhere near enough for Hanifin or Lindholm --without-- retention. Calgary doesn't have to trade anyone now and either player will fetch more than this even as a deadline rental. All three players are on team friendly contracts too so no the Flames won't have to retain to get a worthwhile return.</div></div>
Who else can they trade with when more and more teams are going to be cap-strapped the closer we get to the season while simultaneously getting worthwhile assets? At least in this deal Calgary assures themselves two 2nds and a 3rd and is able to actually fill out their roster. They have less than $2 mil in space now with at least four skaters that they still need to sign.

The Flames are incredibly limited regarding who they can trade with. If Calgary wants to recoup worthwhile assets, they will have no choice but to retain salary.

I'm not saying I (as a Rangers fan) want this to happen.
I'm just saying that if the Rangers are committed to Tarasenko, this is a way to do it that at least recoups two 2nd rounders. They won't get a first if they're asking Chicago to take on the full Goodrow contract.
I want Lindgren to stay a Blueshirt, but this is merely a hypothetical if they want to find a way to keep Laf and Miller while adding Tarasenko.

Rangers currently have $6,175,417 in space.
Goodrow & Lindgren combine for $6,641,667 to now create $12,817,084.
If they can then sign the following...
Tarasenko @ 4-5yr x $4 mil
Miller @ 5-6yr x $5.75 mil
Laf @ 1-2yr x $2.1mil
...then they would have $967,084 left with one roster spot open.
Also, Chicago gets their 25y/o top pair LHD and another locker room leader with reasonable $ and term.

The Trade That Should Have Brought DeBrincat Home
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Ottawa won't be getting that back for him now. Yzerman knows it too.</div></div>
Oh I understand that, but ya gotta figure there's some trade-offs on both sides here.
The 1st CHI received ended up 7th overall, whereas the Boston 2024 is is assumed to be in the 20's or 30's.
The 2nds are similar, and the 3rd is replaced with two guys Yzerman has no plans for that help round out the Sens' forward depth.
Obviously it won't be happening, but I'd hardly call this unreasonable for either side.
