AVALANCHE
The goal of signing Mitts to a deal that long would be to get the AAV down; if he's going the full 8 years, I'd be looking for something around $5.5M and I'd ask for favorable trade protection so I could trade him after three years. They have no space for call-ups in this scenario and what happens when Val comes off LTIR?

Ehlers disappears in the playoffs plus he's on an expiring deal; no thanks. Why not trade the older, more mistake-prone Manson instead of Girard?

They can probably keep Drouin at a lower cost than Tank and, as always, they still have to have room to bring Val back when (if) he is reinstated. I know it might feel good to say, "They'll find a way to get rid of him" but I wouldn't count on it at this point. Maybe we hear more this summer but I'm not even sure they can do anything while he's still in the program unless, perhaps, he fails more tests over the next 5+ months (assuming they test throughout this suspension which I imagine they would).

What do the avs do Pt 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>Oh I don’t think they one sided void it but I do think that with the help of WalMart lawyers who is the largest private employer in the world they come to some sort of mutual termination. But come on they have now burned the 2 best seasons in MacK HOF career because in large part because of the guys problems. No same manager/owner 1) trusts an employee who has acted in such a way multiple times and 2) thinks it’s a good idea to tell a high performing team that hey we are going to give the guy not a second chance not a third chance but like a fourth chance. I like him a lot and think he is a massively talented player but can you really afford to bring him back again? I don’t think so.</div></div>
It's one thing to believe that the person has become too much of a liability (even if he is talented and helps them win games) and another to think they can just get rid of him easily. We can believe they "can't afford" to bring him back while also acknowledging they can't afford to get rid of the contract (buyout or trade). I'm sure they'll try to find a way out of the contract but it may truly be the case that they are stuck with him. In the meantime, at this point at least, it isn't realistic to plan for him not being on the team and having his cap hit to use. It's sucks but this really is an "it is what it is" situation until we hear otherwise.

It's definitely a possibility that he doesn't get reinstated but I feel like banking on him never playing for the Avs again and them being able to void his contract isn't realistic. Many an Avs fan have been hoping for the contract to just disappear which would be nice (although they'll greatly miss the player) but I'll believe it when I see it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>I am willing to bet you a beer he has played his last game as an Avs. Assuming he gets reinstated, which is a big if, if not a huge if at this point, I bet they press for a contract termination. They have clearly tried to help him, maybe to his detriment, with what happened in Seattle and the subsequent multiple drug test failures. You just can’t count on him. The only way I could see it maybe happening is he sits out for at least a year and is clean with random and scheduled tests, but ultimately he just needs to get better for himself and his family.</div></div>
Well, there's a big difference between what it is he needs versus what is possible under the CBA. He's in the program so terminating the contract seems extremely unlikely. If he gets to level 4, that becomes more of a realistic option but there doesn't seem to be a mechanism that would allow them to void his deal. I would be shocked if they successfully argued for termination.

It's going to take some healing but the numbers don't lie: the Avs are a LOT better when Nuke plays so, if he can come back and be productive while the Avs win games, most of his transgressions will be forgiven (although not likely forgotten). Will they always be waiting for the other shoe to drop? You bet but, in reality, they really don't have much of a choice. The Avs hitched their wagon to these players and will have to live with those choices; might as well try to make the best of it and try to win a few more Cups before they hit the inevitable decline.

My hope would be that they sign him to $5.5x4; get him to 29 then let him go. Hopefully Ritchie is ready to take over at 2C at that point. Not sure he would go for that but maybe...Otherwise, see if they can't get favorable terms on a movement clause so the could potentially trade him after 3-4 years. As an arb-eligible RFA, he's got the hammer in contract negotiations so his side is going to control a lot but they Avs can't afford to give another player money, term and extensive trade protection.

"Easily" is quite the overstatement. The first few years wouldn't be bad but they'd have big dead hits for four years after that that they really can't afford. I'd say there is .00000001% chance they buy him out; like it or not, they're a better team when he plays and since the window is now, they'll roll the dice and keep him around.

No player is going to leave $35M on the table by retiring before their contract is up. He seems very hopeful that he'll come back, he's just not sure when. It has been a long road (2 years, to be accurate) but he's still in recovery and rehabbing so if he's not ready to LTIRetire, the team isn't going to push him to do that.

Landeskog is my opinion should just hang his skates up. He won't be the same player and his contract in hindering the avs right now. He should become a coach with the avs system for now.
I think the C should go to Toews. People say mackinnon but he dint want it.
Last thing. Kovalenko did better then expected in my opinion. At times he looked out of place but dude was thrown into a fire with no practice and stuff.
If landy ends up on LTIR they can easily get 2 more top 9 players and a 3rd pairing dmen. I'm a try one with no trades and no landy</div></div>
I don't see anyone taking him on full freight but GMs do weird stuff all the time
We can't know what's going to happen with Landy but we do know he hasn't played competitive hockey in two years and had a surgery not many elite athletes have had. It doesn't look good but we won't know until we hear something.

I actually think sending Nuke to the minors is not a terrible idea. I mean, it doesn't save a ton in cap but it might reinforce just how pissed they are. Maybe he asks for a trade; maybe he refuses to report and they terminate his contract. It's another of several options they have.
I can't see Behrens making the jump next year and I'd rather see them dump Manson than Girard. $2.1M is a lot to pay a 4th line C but he was pretty good for them; if they go 4 years, they should be able to shave at least a little off that cap hit. It's going to be interesting to see if Kovy can stick. He obviously didn't get much time to adjust but looked out of place. Once he does get time to adjust, hopefully he can be a solid bottom-six option. Mitts may very well get more. Of course, if Landy doesn't come back they'll have more money to play with; I wonder if they have an internal timeline on his return because if they go beyond UFA not knowing one way or the other, that's going to be tough to deal with.

1. Of course; we assume a lot of things here. But it makes sense for him to want a fresh start; he had to leave the playoffs TWICE and he knows his teammates are, to say the least, not happy with him. \

I could see a trade with something like 20% retention, a 1st and a decent prospect. Some team might do it knowing that, should he reach level 4, they could then likely terminate his deal. It's a risk some team(s) might be willing to take. Not saying it will happen only that it could under the aforementioned conditions.
