On behalf of all Habs fans, We whole heartily accept both of these trades. I assume Avs and Oilers fans have no issues with their hauls either haha.

Different AVS Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DiehardRedWingsFan58</b></div><div>Yeah sorry Girard is going nowhere, Sakic pretty much said that he's not moving any of his D especially for the cup run. Any D he moves happens at the draft not now.</div></div>
I am not arguing what Sakic may or may not have said. I will note that the only cup Byram will be playing for this year will be the Chynoweth Cup, so removing him will have zero affect on the Avs current roster for a playoff run.

I think the OP is stating what the new contract would be - it does not look like a conditional pick. or anything like that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DocArin0</b></div><div>Either Mellanby & Bergevins daughter or dating, or they were lying who would have thought xd</div></div>
It wasn't MB who claimed to be in town to visit his daughter.
As per Ryan S. Clark's tweet, of the Athletic,
"GM Joe Sakic addressed the media before the game. He was asked about Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin being her for two games in a row.
He said, "Marc's daughter goes to CU" and just left at that with a grin."

TDL 2020
At first I saw Backes and thought why on earth would the Habs take that on that contract for another year, then noticed the pick was a 1st being offered. Seems fair overall. Perfect scenario is that Backes pulls a Kovy and shines to be flipped yielding another pick or prospect next year.

So let me sum this up, the impressively performing Habs #2 RHD defensemen is to become the Leafs #1 RDH, and the Leaf's should grossly overpay the Habs because the Leafs eligibly appear to have overpaid for another defender. Does this really make sense to you... come on be honest? Maybe a little wishful thinking, may....be? Check your bias, please!</div></div>
This entire "Trade-machine" is built on wishful thinking - I am no different.
If Petry is dealt, there will be a decent return - maybe not from Dubas though.

Curious, which RHD would be #1 on the Leafs if Petry slotted into #2 ? Right now, Petry would be a top pairing D on the Leafs, and if the Leafs traded for him, the return must exceed whatever was paid for Muzzin.

Thompson should get a 4th and Kovalchuck should get at least a 3rd. Nordström is a pending UFA, and holds little to no value for the Habs this season (other than to trade again or to temporarily fill a spot).
If you unwind the pieces Thompson plus Kovalchuk gets that 2nd, Tatar gets the 1st and 3rd - if anything add another 6 or 7th to Montreal for taking on Nordström's contract to make room on Boston's roster for their pieces.

The Habs gave Kovalchuk the opportunity to succeed, and he has been doing just that. Leaving out ELC, who else has a pro-rated salary of $700,000 producing a point per game in 2020 (smaller sample but still multiple weeks in to his new digs).
There are many teams who are up against the cap ceiling. It only takes an injury or two on those teams for MB's phone to start ringing.

My 2c. No need for Talbot. McNiven should move up to Laval behind/beside Lingren and Primeau up to the big club behind Price. $2 million more in cap space, and wont need to protect Primeau for expansion draft.
