Keeping Meier Redux
I’d rather keep Brodie fs. ~2 mil in cap savings is cool and all but with this mock roster you’re not even using any of the cap savings, while downgrading to a worse defenceman who also isn’t familiar with the team

Bunting definitely makes the team
Hunt certainly does not
Replacing Joseph + Talbot + Hunt with Bunting + Samsonov + Giroux would fit I think

Verhaeghe would be an amazing fit + is on a great contract. The deal would definitely make sense for both sides if we send them one of our d men + picks/prospects

Brodie > Parayako (especially when considering contracts)
Barbashev ≈ Kerfoot (with retention I’ll say Barby could have a bit more value)

No way the Leafs make this deal

Getting Ahead of The Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingExLeafs</b></div><div>TK is better than Bunting. But if Kerfoot and Engvall are let go then Bunting can be resigned to just under 5 million.
Moving on from Rielly saves the Leafs a lot of money. The Leafs would be able to afford quality top six wingers.</div></div>
Rielly has just signed an 8 year extension w/ NMC. He’s not going because he won’t allow it.
TK is better than Bunting but is it worth all those assets to get TK for this deadline then have to let Bunting go this offseason? Straight up value is there if TK keeps this play up but considering Bunting’s situation, I don’t think it’s worthwhile for us rn

Getting Ahead of The Deadline
1. Too much for Bertuzzi, plus to my knowledge you can’t put conditions on players resigning anymore but that might be wrong.
2. Rielly ain’t going anywhere
3. TK is a very good player but there would be nearly as good players available from elsewhere for cheaper, and getting TK would most likely mean we can’t keep Bunting

The ask for Chychrun was what, 2 1sts and a good prospect? This is most certainly worth more than that.
1st is a 1st, Sandin > a 1st, Robertson is the prospect, and then the rest which is certainly of value

Not really a reason to make that second trade. Anderson has looked great so far on that 4th line, whereas True hasn’t even played this year yet (unless the NHL app is lying). True is also older and has worse AHL production

Parayko is not worth that contract and sure as hell not worth that trade value. You give up this type of package for a true #1 defenceman with term. Parayko has the term but far back from the quality of play

Very true, but with considering his not so great play this year plus this year’s 1st rounder being more valuable than a regular 1st, he ain’t gonna get much more I hate to say it

ROR - whats the cost
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheEarthmaster</b></div><div>A first and a good prospect at minimum, which is more or less where all top end TDL assets start. I think the whole "they decide to move him" thing comes with crossing that threshold, otherwise I could see them re-signing him (even if I don't think that's the right decision). I kind of doubt it will have to be this year's first but obviously they'll be gunning for that. And the Blues have a lot of pseudo-top six forward prospects so if I were them I would be targeting someone like Niemela over someone like Robertson.
But if there's several teams interested, it goes up from there. It will be interesting to see how the Horvat thing shakes out and how the markets affect each other.</div></div>
Horvat’s return will definitely impact ROR’s. I imagine Horvat gets a bigger return based off this years play (although I consider ROR the better player overall). And I agree, I think St Louis would definitely prefer a defenceman over a forward in terms of prospects. If Toronto moves a 1st in the deal I doubt they move Niemela on top of it, which sucks for Toronto if St Louis wants a d man on top of the first as their defensive prospect system isn’t very deep after him due to their top d prospects having graduated in the past couple years. The best Toronto has after Niemela is Villeneauve/Kokkonen/Kral, none of which I consider B level prospects

ROR - whats the cost
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>If that sort of offer is enough it will be just barely enough... but then you have the issue of who else can beat it? At this time, there's several teams that would be able to top that quite easily. Honestly, I highly doubt Toronto is capable of landing O'Reilly. Lots of small prospects who also aren't terribly strong skaters. That is a speed-size mix not generally enjoyed by the Blues, especially in their Cs and Ds.</div></div>
I can’t imagine it’s too much more than a 1st and 2 B prospects (I would consider a B prospect to be worth around a mid to late 2nd, so it’s basically a 1st and 2 2nds is what I’m saying). Most rentals don’t go for much more.

Meier
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Missing that late 1st is a huge drop in value, they would basically only have 1 shot of getting a player similar to Meier. He's a 26 yo PPG established player, so SJ should at least get two chances at getting a player of similar skill. With the draft being deep, they should have at least 1, other than that they got nothing else in there.</div></div>
I mean a 2023 1st and 2024 1st could work instead. Maybe something like:
23 1st
24 1st
Abbruzzese
Kerfoot
For
Meier
2023 Sharks 3rd rounder
Gives them more of a top quality piece back

Meier
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Yeah, but what if a team at the draft was willing to offer the 7th OV pick for example for Meier straight (less than what DeBrincat got). It's going to beat that offer.
The ask for Meier is a 1st and a blue chip prospect if I'm not mistaken. So probably Knies+the 2023 1st, maybe they will allow it to be a 2024 1st idk.</div></div>
Well that would beat the offer but we don’t need to worry about that happening because no team that is projecting to have a top 10 pick is going to trade it.
The way I see it,
Gap between 7th last year and a late first this year is about another late first this year
Early 2nd last draft < Hirvonen (mid 2nd from a couple drafts ago) + Kerfoot
Early 3rd this year > 3rd that Chicago got
Abbruzzese adds a bit of value
So it’s a fairly solid asset behind in value compared to Debrincat trade but it’s not super far behind, and depending on how big the gap in the returns is expected to be between Debrincat and Meier, this might get it done

I would say that for this draft. This draft a late 1st (let’s say 25 OVR) is gonna be worth closer to a pick in the late teens in a normal draft because of how deep this draft is

1. Leafs need a RD
2. I can’t see Leafs paying this much up for a rental. They seemed to have learnt from the Foligno move. Then again you never know. Personally I wouldn’t do it and instead would love to get a guy like Marcus Pettersson who has more term + would cost less (and is one of the best defenceman at not giving the puck away while boasting very impressive entry denial numbers and defensive analytics)

Mackinnon hates Garland, he would never be allowed to play on the same team as him
that is a gross gross over payment for Domi, such a bad deal for the avs</div></div>
They’re paying for both the money retained (2.25 mil in total) and for the minor upgrade from Compher to Domi. Kaut/Maltsev have little to no value and I just included them to fit under the cap but they realistically could just be placed on waivers.
As for Garland, unless I’m mistaken, it was only one incident of a fight (again, if I’m wrong and there is a clear consistent rivalry between them please tell me). One fight between two guys from over 2 years ago I wouldn’t say prohibits them from being teammates, as we see plenty of former enemies turn teammates and succeed greatly. If Garland really doesn’t work out then a forward similar to Garland (non rental, 4-5 mil cap hit, above average 2nd liner) can be subbed into the deal
