AVS 23-24
Annunen is not ready to be a full-time backup
Drouin on the 3rd line is a very bad idea; he sucks defensively. And he won't be supplanting anyone in the top six so, not worth it to sign him
Byram won't sign a deal like that
Barbie doesn't play much at C; much like Schmaltz, most of his success has come from the wing. Good player but he isn't going to come in and own that 2C spot the way you'd want him to. Also, $5M is a lot for a guy that had one good outlier year but is otherwise a borderline 2nd/3rd liner. He's having a good playoffs but sort of reads to me like a JTC who actually plays a physical game.

JTC on that deal would be a major disappointment for a team like the Avs. For Chicago? He'd be perfect.

Avs Cup run
Signing Byram to a deal that walks him right up to UFA is an interesting idea. Treating Girard like a camp dump is also interesting as is paying to have someone take Frankie. This feels like making moves just to make moves as a knee-jerk reaction to a very depleted Avs losing in the first round this year but, okay.

Keeping G and Toews
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>earl08</b></div><div>local guys are ALWAYS more in-the-know than national ones that get fed info by the league. I've met my source at my neighborhood grocery store and built trust with them. I can say for certain that Bo wants to be The Man, and The Man doesn't play on the second pair nor take team friendly deals.</div></div>
I have no doubt Bo wants to be that top-pair guy playing next to Cale; dude is competitive and knows his value which is why I believe they need to trade Toews. It just does not make sense for them to keep both and they probably can't keep both. I guess they can pay Bo and let Toews walk but it seems silly to not get something they need back by trading Toews but I can see them being stubborn and just letting him walk.

That's fine and a good thing for them but is he ready to step in and be an impact player right now? CBJ have been patient but they need to step it up after going out and landing Gaudreau and their D are not up to the task currently.

Maybe they'd rather go with the "sure thing" with Toews rather than banking on kids that might make an impact somewhere down the road? I mean, the clock is ticking on Laine and Gaudreau right now so, can they afford to wait for the arrival of those players?

Oh, for the love of...teams are frequently permitted to speak with agents and players about potentially signing a new deal with the team they're being traded to. Since sign-and-trades rarely happen, that would be the situation here. It isn't at all unrealistic to think it couldn't play out that way.

Did you not see that he re-signs with CBJ? Pretty much any deal for pending UFA's assumes they re-sign the player coming to them.

Perhaps
Unless Landy really is done, I don't see how the Avs can afford that contract; I'm not even sure PLD is worth that much - I think I'd top out at $6.75M for him. He's a very good player and an ideal 2C but I am concerned with his history of being a malcontent. And that 4th line is pretty bad - Nieto and Meyers were a mess last season. Don't forget that Mikko needs to be re-signed after next season then Cale is up a few years later but Bo will also need a longer-term deal in that time period. If you're planning on re-signing Toews, that means you're committing a ton of money and cap space to Mac, Mikko, Cale, Toews, PLD, Nuke and possibly Bo. Yes, the cap will go up but that just means the players will make more money.

Internal 2C option
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>They desperately need one or you have to give it to Newhook and just live with growing pains. No Bednar nonsense about playing the top line 23 minutes and the bottom 6 15. I’m a big fan of Newhook but if he can’t handle the 2C spot and you don’t have somebody that can do it on the roster they will be fubar.</div></div>
I completely agree they need to find out if Newy is a 2C (or any kind of C) or not; it's what they should have done this season. It was always going to be an uphill climb to repeat with all the FA's they lost and then the injuries happened. Might as well just let the kid play and see what he can do then make a decision about him as C or W then figure it out from there. And Bednar, for all his positives, needs to take a more balanced approach to his playing time. The FO also needs to commit to calling up Foudy and Olausson multiple times and telling Bednar they need real playing time when they do get there. They will never become real options unless they get real opportunities. The Avs, if they want a dynasty, need to shift to being a bit more patient; they've got the core around for a while and can be contenders every year but they've traded away the pieces that bring back impact players. Grow their own talent, make smart acquisitions and win a few more Cups before Mac and Mikko and Cale are greybeards.

Internal 2C option
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>M96N29</b></div><div> any trade would have to be heavily in our favor.</div></div>
I keep telling people this when they try to get Toews or Girard for magic beans but they just keep doing it. At least Guentzel is a young-ish goal-scorer but even that isn't all that enticing because he's expiring and will want a raise; wings are also the easiest and cheapest pieces to acquire so this trade needs a lot more coming the Avs way for it work but the Pens don't have what the Avs need or want.

Keep Bert
Boston fans need to get realistic about Hall (although they are more realistic than Leafs fans are about Nylander): he's a 31 y/o wing (32 near the start of next season) with two more years at $6M. He performed like a $4M wing this season and the Bruins need that cap space to try and re-sign the guys they spent a ton of assets on at the TDL. That all translates to them practically giving him away rather than returning premium assets.

I'd ask for Johnston but that isn't happening. Sillinger would be a good get, his sophomore slump notwithstanding. Sillinger, Bemstrom/Foudy/Texier, LAK 2023 1st, CBJ 2023 2nd?

the nba never calls treliving
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AvsFanatic96_01_22</b></div><div>Oh yeah for sure, there’s no way they’d do Toews for Nylander, who would also be a rental, I was just saying Toews is untouchable unless the team and him can’t come to an agreement.</div></div>
I actually think they should just trade him. They have his replacement in Byram - whom they also need to re-sign long-term and probably can't afford both even if Toews takes a massive discount - and he'll be 30 soon. IMO, they'd be better served getting back good assets for him to fill out areas of need. This does deplete the D corps a bit but helps make the team much better up front which they clearly need. If I were GM, I'd be shopping him come July 1 to get back a couple of good middle-six players. Surely more than a couple teams would be very interested in Toews and be willing to give up guys like that.

I could see it if that is the case but I'd rather them go after someone they have a better chance at re-signing if they're going to trade DT.

This would be a buy-low proposition on a camp dump from Pitt in hopes Granny could rebound. Granlund has had some good years and is not terribly old but I imagine the Pens would be happy to get rid of his contract.

Developing? The guy that played the most 5v5 minutes in the SCF a year ago is "developing"? Any team would be grateful to have Byram and could easily play him top-pair to great effect; kid's already a stud. The injuries are unfortunate but it would be monumentally stupid for them to trade Byram for what would end up being a Nylander rental.
