Vancouver Canucks signed Braden Holtby (2 Years / $4,300,000 AAV)
The back end of this deal will cost the Emerald City $5.7M in real dollars if they select him in the expansion draft. Here's hoping!

Wish him all the best but a risky move considering his age and his torn meniscus. Turned down Edmonton 7x $5M.

Feel good story. I can't wait to hear about how he started playing roller hockey. Talk about finding one's game and 'never saw this coming'. What a difference to his career by moving to Europe.

Temporary back up to Demko. But I don't get it. A fringer for an AHLer straight up? Maybe returning future considerations?

Big win for the Canucks. Unlike recent trades, this isn't an overpayment.

Maybe they should throw in Pettersson as sweetener?

Canadian teams help each other
Vancouver is 'OK' with it. GMJB excitedly hangs up the phone. He bumps into a reporter at the sushi table and blurts out the trade. The media goes wild and Edmonton nixes the trade faster than Chiarelli was driven to the airport.

3 team trade
Hughes is already the best defenseman the Canucks have ever had. Why would they pay a 1st and 2x 5th more for a comparable player? Vancouver politely declines.

(TOR/LAK) - Moore, 2020 3rd round pick, Conditionial 2021 3rd round pick for Campbell, Clifford
Now that the conditions are public this is a huge win for LA. TML must ride Hutchison in hopes Campbell fails to win 6 games.
They will probably make the playoffs so the conditional 3rd becomes a 2nd. Moore and two thirds* for a grinder and a backup? Yikes!

Det using cap space as asset
Hard pass from the Canucks. LE21 gets his signing bonus on July 1st then he is only paid $5M over the next 2 seasons, If Van retains half, the cap hit is $3M and pay is $2.5M. That is quite average for a bottom six player that is currently playing on the second line.

(NJD/ARI) - Hall, Speers for Bahl, Merkley, Schnarr, 1sr round pick, conditional 3rd round pick
I wonder what Hall would be worth if he was locked up at $5.25M for the upcoming 3 seasons, was 2 years younger and not prone to injury?
Surely a lot more than a 1st, a 3rd and a prospect...

Having seen them both play quite a bit, there is zero question that while Makar is a great player, Pettersson is easily the better of the two.

5 Questions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brian2016</b></div><div>1. What are Doug Armstrong's options now that Tarasenko is probably out for the rest of the regular season? Is there a trade he can make to augment the Blues scoring? Are the Blues still a playoff team w/o one of their best players?
2. Are the Sabres, Coyotes, Oilers, and Canucks for real this season? Which of these 4 teams make the playoffs?
3. What should the Leafs do to sure up their struggling Defense? A trade? A lineup shuffle? A coaching change? All 3?
4. Even with Malkin set to return to the Pens lineup is Pittsburgh deep enough to make the playoffs again this season? If not, what can or should Rutherford do to make them a real contender in the Metro?
5. Which player is the biggest surprise and which player has been the biggest disappointment so far this season?</div></div>
1 & 3) Blues trade Pietrangelo to the Leafs for Kapanen.
2) Oilers are punching above their weight class and are in the process of a free-fall. Their goaltending is highly suspicious. Missing the playoffs for certain. I don't see Arizona sustaining this either. Buffalo and Vancouver make it.
4) Every year a good team will fall out of the playoff picture. This year it is the Penguin's turn.
5) James Neal for sure. New Jersey for the bad.
