Chicago Blackhawks signed Madison Bowey (2 Years / $725,000 AAV)
Dirt cheap for 2 years, even if its just a depth/injury replacement signing- its great value.
I think he still has potential to be a NHL regular, still young, surprised he wasnt signed earlier.

Time for Roslovic to produce, if he does both the contract and the trade will be steals for Columbus.

Sell off and TDL
btw- the cap is still in effect after the TDL, it is not in effect during the playoffs. How all this plays out with the 'taxi squad' Im not certain, but if the NHL calls shenanigans on some creative roster management by teams that Bettman doesnt like (Vancouver, most canadian teams outside Toronto)..then expect some heavy 'recapture' penalties for years.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed John Marino (6 Years / $4,400,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pens3lieve</b></div><div>This is an incredible contract!
Early estimates were around 5 1/2-6 M.
Marino was in the 90th percentile in EV defence this year and I think he has more offence to give!
He’s amazing!
Thanks, Edmonton!!!</div></div>
Who was predicting 6mil? for a guy with less than a full season under his belt, considering his short track record and the flat cap issue on a team near the limit- this is an overpay! He may turn into the next Slavin or Pesce- but they had longer track records and werent signing on a cap strapped team during a pandemic. A risky move (and unnecessary) at this time.

Sell off and TDL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wqrrior</b></div><div>Blake Coleman essentially got a 1st and a 2nd, and he is older and not an RFA. I'd also argue less talented. This is the market for this type of player at the TDL.
Remember, teams add at the TDL... just because guys are still on the market now doesn't mean they won't be adding later.</div></div>
Your original trade breakdown doesnt mention a TDL for Garland (only Raanta specifically)- but the fact Coleman was signed at a low hit for 1 more year- made him more valuable - he wasnt a rental- Garland could very well be, his future cost is unknown. Also comparing where Tampa was at the TDL this past year vs where Calgary is- isnt even close (although i think Calgary has improved- they arent the powerhouse that Tampa has been for a few years now).
Arizona is a mess of a team, Garland may be moved- but their focus is going to be moving out the bigger contracts (Kessel, Hjalmarsson, Larsson) rather than Garland.

Sell off and TDL
Garland maybe cheap, but giving up a 1st,2nd and 3rd for him and a bottom pairing (at best) dman is way too much.
Hoffman is still out there, and Duclair signed for cheap- both capable of providing the same offense- and the Flames didnt make those moves. Arizona is looking to move pricey contracts- not get rid of cheap ones.

Cap Ammo
Ottawa missed a great opportunity to weaponize their capspace. I like the idea of picking up Fleury, retain some salary and then flipping him to a team (and Carolina needs a goalie!), but last I heard Nilsson is questionable, he still has issues with a concussion, so i doubt he has any trade value until he is able to return to play. Hogberg should be fine as a backup, and they have a few good goalie prospects coming.
Why they gave up anything to acquire Gudbrandson when they couldve likely gotten another asset/pick to take on a contract like Boychuk, Hjalmarsson,Demers etc. is dumbfounding.
Adding Eriksson (who is owed very little, and is fine on your 4th line) and getting another asset for nothing more than capspace (or a LTIR waste like Gaborik), should be a no brainer, although I doubt the Canucks are willing to move a 1st rounder to do it.

Florida Panthers signed MacKenzie Weegar (3 Years / $3,250,000 AAV)
I swear 9 out of 10 deals posted here are met with overwhelming 'great deal/ total steal' comments. Kinda redundant- especially if its the same people posting the same bs every signing.
Especially when they qualify it with the tired 'well I had him at 4.5 for 6 years- so this is fantastic! ' newsflash- youre not the gm, and you probably cant even build a decent hockey pool team!
Im sure plenty of you loved when Lucic, Eriksson, Gudbrandson, Bobrovsky all signed their latest deals. How did that work out?
I vote only slightly positive overall- and most of that is due to all the minimum salary deals out there, where teams are only risking a roster spot.

At this point in Ottawa, hes an injury call-up, but why Ottawa went out and gave up assets for Gudbrandson and Brown (and EG contract is punitive to move to put it mildly), when they had Jaros,Zub,Brannstrom etc in the pipeline, not to mention lots of better options than EG for much less money as UFA's is beyond me.

Really? resorting to insults for stating that the money is running out? Cap space is running out for many teams, still a few decent players without contracts that are now scrambling for paychecks. The chances for the situation to be better next year- are slim, but the chances of being much worse- are pretty high. Still no idea how theyre going to play games, how many, how many with fans, with just tv revenue (and sports tv ratings have plummeted) the NHL isnt on solid footing. Even if the salaries are pro-rated for games played, with zero gate revenue, there are quite a few teams losing millions next year.

The Leivo/Hawryluk numbers are very close per game. Hawryluk is also 3 years younger, any advantage one has the over the other is minimal at best.
Leivo's is just one of many value deals available at the bottom end of FA. Just no money to spend for most teams, and it will likely get worse next year.

Vancouver Canucks signed Jake Virtanen (2 Years / $2,550,000 AAV)
I like the deal, like the player- despite the fact his play can be infuriating at times. He takes too many stupid penalties , can get lazy in his own end, but both fixable. Hes one of the fastest players, yet apparently he isnt always in top shape! He can hit hard, but rarely does it, so much potential, yet he doesnt seem to take it very serious or apply himself. With the talent around him, if he did- he could get 30 goals easily. he just has to want it more.

Ottawa Senators signed Connor Brown (3 Years / $3,600,000 AAV)
He got almost 1.1 million more than Virtanen....frankly i dont see it. Hes a decent 3rd liner- but 2nd line is a stretch, but if any of the young players falter, I guess he can slide up the roster. Virtanen has much more upside, but he takes bad penalties, needs to mature.
Sens did some strange moves, I dont think they managed all that cap space well, buying out Ryan? not taking on similar contracts and getting other prospects/drafts as well? Why the hell would you give up anything for Gudbrandson (who seems to be on a 'guess what team Im going to disappoint next' contract tour), while taking on the full salary? $4mil per can get you a decent dman. Hamonic is still out there, and he is miles better than Gudbrandson. Hell i would rather go with Bowey or Koekkoek than him. They cost less and have much more upside ( i thought Koekkoek played well in the playoffs for the Hawks, surprised they didnt bring him back).

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Ilya Mikheyev (2 Years / $1,645,000 AAV)
Joey Anderson hasnt played a full season in the NHL, he got into only 18 games last year... with the Devils being a bottom feeder. Moving Johnsson was all about cap space.
Canucks walked away from Stecher, who was nothing more than a bottom pairing dman, he sucked when they tried to move him up into top 4. He wasnt as quick as Hughes, or anywhere near as smart a player, and he is easily manhandled in his own zone. He played much better this year- but no way was he getting his old salary from the Canucks or anyone.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Danny12357</b></div><div>Cap hell is a fun term. .. but it doesn't really apply here. Last year was cap hell, they had to pay assets to move bad contracts and still ended up with some bad deals on the books.
The cap situation right now is quite clean. They were easily able to move players to make room for their offseason plans, and actually got assets back in those deals. Right now they can sign their final RFA without making a trade, and while they will be tight to the cap, they really don't have any cap issues.</div></div>
Yah, getting out of caphell is easy- when you give away first round picks to take on contracts (Marleau) or just give up good young and reasonably priced players (Johnsson) for nothing. He was projected to play in their top 6- and they got an unsigned minor leaguer for him.
If they demote Engvall (the 2nd coming!) and use Marincin as their 7th dman (yikes!)...and carry only 22 NHLers...and dont keep Dermott on their NHL roster (via demotion or trade)..then they barely squeak under the cap- by about $100k. yup- squeaky clean!

It doesnt matter how the contract is paid out, his AVERAGE for the 2 years is what matters, his caphit doesnt change in year #2.

Players signed at the minimum (or close to it) arent an issue for the cap- they can be sent down to the minors with zero penalty. A buyout, a trade, or demoting someone like Eriksson will give you some relief. Considering that Tyler Johnson at $5mil was unmoveable- how much do you think teams are willing to spend on Virtanen? he has very little bargaining power.

Great signing, surprised they didnt go for 2 years just to avoid the headache next year.
As for the long prediction posted above- Leivo isnt signed by anyone. Ferland is likely to be on the LTIR, and who says they want to resign Edler and Pearson at those values? Nor does anyone know what the cap situation is going to be like- RFA's wont be able to demand big raises if the money isnt there. some are finding out now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafs_and_Sens_Fan</b></div><div>Not sure if your being sarcastic or not. Schmidt >>> Tanev</div></div>
Different styles of play- I think the Canucks need a pure shot blocker like Tanev more, but Schmidt has much more offense to his game, and isnt lost in his own zone either. IF they didnt have cap issues- then 5.9 for a dman like Schmidt isnt terrible...but they do, and they just helped out a team with HUGE issues- and a deadline to sign AP! they shouldve got him for nothing,if not some cap relief (via contract dumping) or by Vegas keeping something of that contract.

Benning sucks. Could have had Tanev (whose only 1 year older) for 1.5mil less and keep that 3rd! Bad asset management by Benning, meanwhile he lets another team off the hook and out of cap hell....and gives up a decent draft pick to do so? while his own team remains in caphell??? one of Bennings bad contracts shouldve gone the other way (and there is plenty to choose from).

This is more than I thought anyone would spend on Toffoli (just due to the cap situation), and the four years is okay, but he isnt the fastest guy out there- and the game is more speed orientated than ever, anything longer than 4 years- is dicey.
