Awful contract but Chicago doesn't care about that in the slightest

Limited sample size and none of them are good signings.

Because he's had to. Even with all the overpays, Hawks still have the lowest cap and will likely be at or near the bottom for the next 2 years. None of his signings are worth judging yet because they're all meaningless placeholder overpays. His first real evaluation as a negotiator will come in the offseason with Vlasic

Immovable contract. I would go as far as to say that no team in the NHL would take Nick Foligno, even at 50% retention. Is he a leadership guy? Absolutely. But that is his singular job within the organization. He's not a great point producer, he is not a great defensive player, he is an off ice presence at that's it. Which, isn't bad to sign. But it is bad to give up $4.5mil at a time where expensive, quality players are going to be readily available this year and next. Waste of cap space.

In the next 2 years they have 8ish million in dead cap coming off the books with only Vlasic and maybe Reichel due for big raises plus AA, Beau, Hall and Zaitsev all making over 4million expiring. Plus the cap likely going up 6-8 million over the next 2 years, They're going to be near the cap floor for a few years even with massive overpays

But hitting the cap floor or using their cap space this way is part of the opportunity cost to take on other teams bad contracts and acquire assets (prospects, draft picks).

It's only 500k above his current cap hit and they currently have more than enough space to take bad contracts if they wanted to. Davidson doesn't even have much appetite for cap dumps right now anyway; they already have a large stockpile of picks, want to keep some roster spots open for competition as prospects start coming up, and are heavily focused on locker room culture.

Contract is terrible. But good for chicago, keeps them above the cap floor I guess. Great leader, I respect him a lot.

No it's a bad deal. I get they have lots of cap room, but this is two years down the road. Cap room has value. Spending it on veteran leadership fine, but this is shortsighted.

Who would have thought Foligno would have made so much money once he hit UFA.

$53.6 million for 11 years.

A 2-year raise, at that price? Are they planning on contending this decade?

Apparently you think decades are two years long...

He's not living up to his contract this year and he's getting a raise? I would have concerns at half this price.

Man, being a Veteran player on Chicago and NOT sleeping with Bedard's mom really pays dividends.

Really don't understand the second year nor the money. Seems like a guy you'd want to trade since you're not getting out of the basement this year and probably not next either. Great for Nick though, hell yeah get that money my man.

It can be both a good signing and a bad contract.
He's getting paid to be part of a rebuild instead of chasing a cup and Chicago isn't worried about the money right now. At the end they can retain and find the best fit for him to maybe join a contender down the line.

I get that Chicago wanted to keep him around, but for this AAV, seems like they could have done one year deals. If he falls off a cliff in year 2 he wouldn't even be tradeable half off come TDL his final season.

More than likely, the organization wants to keep him after this deal takes him to retirement in a player development role, and this contract is building good will with him.

He will have made $20m+ AFTER leaving Columbus. Would not have been my bet.

Well since the contract is for 2 years and they don’t plan on contending for the next 2 years… yes. They plan to contend in the remaining 8 years when the prospects are ready and they can make legit FA signings.

Maybe I’m expecting too much from them. Still, Pittsburgh made the playoffs in Crosby’s second year with the team.
