I think he's talking about the trade from 18 to 20 and how it makes sense. When I made this I just looked up who had pick 20 and traded for it, it indeed does not make sense given what happened a week ago.

Thanks for keeping it polite. I'm just mocking up some trade concepts, if Armstrong can strongarm (:halo) some better returns then I'd be all for it.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>It's going to take 2-3 years before they push too much further than teetering the line of playoff team regardless. See this is the key point for me. And I know the FO is factoring in revenue, ticket sales, team morale, etc. during the retool, so I get where they're coming from. I just worry they're not doing enough to really turn a corner. If they think they can land a no.1 defenseman with pick 16 or fill that hole with 7 years of big money handed to a 28 yr old free agent, they are playing a much riskier game than they think. Sometimes you gotta ride the wave, up-down-up. If they pick a guy at 16 this year and again next year in a similar draft slot, and then think the retool is done and it's time to buy a couple FAs and make a push, it will not go very well. I don't want them to trade away the core players and sit at the bottom of the league forever, I just want 1-2 years of committing to it (i.e. trading guys that can speed up the process).

They drafted top 10 for 6 years before getting on Makar. They didn’t really reach that next level until they had drafted Makar either.
By that design, are we better off wasting all of the Thomas contract?</div></div>
I just think the half-measures they're taking right now might set them back to where they do waste the entire Thomas contract. How are the Blues going to reach the next level?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>While yes I agree, you can’t completely quantify the issue I believe the front office wants to avoid.
There’s a real possibility that throwing guys in over their head, and not having guys who have been there before, and even just going into a season knowing you’re going to lose, creates a very bad environment. Not toxic necessarily, but there’s a level of contempt was and not playing the right way that can easily leak into a dressing room in situations like that. That’s the absolute last thing you want this wave of young players we have coming up stepping in to.</div></div>
Only guy that would apply to here is Dvorsky and I'd be happy with him in the AHL for a season. 21 yr old Nathan Mackinnon played 20 min per night for 82 games on a team that went 22-56-4 (48 points). The next season they went 43-30-9 (95 points). A bad season that garnered a top pick would not ruin the franchise, I disagree with that line of thinking.

True I forgot about that, I just grabbed a team with a pick around #20, feels like targeting Solberg at #16 is a little too early although I've seen him mocked there a few times now.

What about Buch and Hayes (50% retained twice) for 11oa and Krebs. Depending on what the board looks like when they get to 11 this could be a great move for STL's D in the future; not sure if BUF would want to move that pick though. Plus there's trade protection hurdles.

We can sit and debate whether its wise to trade binner and im sure we'd agree on a lot of points, but for me, trading binner would indicate to the fans, management is shutting this thing down for the next 3-5, top out at 50-60pts a year and rebuild through the draft. At that point is anyone not named Thomas untouchable?</div></div>
Yeah they're trying to do a difficult thing - trying to build a future roster without saying "rebuild" out loud or hitting rock bottom - but I think you can justify dealing #89 and #50 as part of a re-tool. They're not core players in the 2027-2030 window that is more or less written on the wall. Armstrong should be stressing to the fans that he's going to ensure that the prime of Thomas and Kyrou isn't going to be wasted in a long rebuild. Instead he's saying "yeah I could trade my 4 best players and be bad until 2035" which is just maddening. Nobody is asking for that. We simply want a couple more high end pieces to be ready when it's time to really push. Those pieces are gonna be really hard to find if your ammunition is 16oa picks and free agent contracts.
About your title, do we think they've already got something in the works?

Just to play Devil's Advocate on Binnington... this is probably the first offseason since signing this contract that his trade value will be significant/positive. He was trending in the wrong direction for the last few years. I'm sure there is an argument to be made that his numbers were sewered by a bad team in front of him, but reality is that right now may be the best time to shop him. And with the Blues a few years away from competing, why would he be untouchable? To be honest I would've liked to see Buch and Binner traded last deadline. Considering the buyer's market that developed, it's understandable that they're still here but for me they are the obvious pieces to move in any effort to re-tool. They have the most trade value, a large impact on whether the team is bottom third or middle third in the standings, and the least importance to a 2026-and-beyond roster.

For the Blues Fans - Buchnevich
The first bullet for the Blues to dodge is the 8x8 contract framework that they're likely working on. Great player, wrong direction to take the roster. If they break up those talks and put him on the board this summer at 50% I think he fetches a pick in the 11-22 range and a pretty solid young prospect from teams on the cusp. At the deadline the pick is probably later in the round coming from a contender.
An interesting wrinkle is that the Blues have been using him at center. If other teams think of him as a center, history would suggest an even higher price tag.

Buying out Krug opens up almost his entire cap hit for this season, and 4M for the next, which would allow them to add a 6M player now (via FA/trade) and not have to worry about it the following year assuming the cap goes up at least 2M (which it should).</div></div>
Moving out Krug is the prerequisite to essentially any offseason movement - for the roster spot and the cap money. He probably doesn’t waive to anywhere that would take him. And I don’t think he gets bought out yet, maybe next summer. That’s why I think this offseason will be a quiet one for the Blues. Not a bad thing, just wish they would’ve bottomed out a little harder for these years.

I would love Marner on the Blues. However we aren’t in a position to shell out future assets or trade off the guys that fit what Toronto needs. If there’s something around Kyrou and Faulk for Marner at an extension number that isn’t much above 10m/year I’d be happy.
But with Kyrou on the roster, we can’t afford to add a Marner. And we can’t afford to trade Parayko.</div></div>
Not a bad player but not the right one for the Blues right now and not worth the presumed cost to acquire. The concept should be dead by now.

It's usually a dead giveaway by how slanted the trade is one way or the other. I've seen people give him up for nothing and I've seen him traded for a team's 3 best assets. The fact is, I doubt it ever goes further than Treliving asking him to waive the NMC. And if it does, that means Mitch picks where he's going, and that won't be a fun trade for Leafs Land. If he's a nice guy (no evidence from past dealings) he'll give them a list that has more than one destination but we'll see.

FWIW that package seems steep to me from the STL side but 16oa is starting to look like no-man's land in this draft whereas a much-needed impact RHD should be there at 10. I'm thinking the Blues should move up or down but we'll see how it unfolds.

Yeah I remember when Theo signed they said the plan is to stay in Sweden. I'm sure Otto will be the same. The interesting one is going to be Pekarcik... hasn't committed to NCAA, doubt they'll send him back to USHL again, and he's AHL eligible out of Europe. Whats the plan
Plan is the same as last year. Armstrong calls it a "Retool" but I call it a "Quiet Rebuild". Trying to make playoffs for some extra revenue, but stuck between not trying hard enough and not tearing down enough. I doubt much will change - just getting another year closer to the end of some contracts, and integrating some of the younger guys as they become ready.
Unless it's a top pair guy coming in (precursor being one of Leddy/Krug/Faulk moved out somehow) I don't think they'll change the defense. Hopefully they can find a gem or two in the draft and start to plot out the turnover that will happen in 2-3 years.
FWIW I don't think Kapanen is gonna be invited back, I think his spot is going to Marcus Sylvegard who they just signed out of SHL.

Chychrun isn't a perfect target but if they could add 22 minutes from him every night, it could really improve the output of the rest of the guys that have been a little out of their depth. I still have some concerns about his durability but he finally played 82 this season so that's a nice surprise.
