Look at the contract details. He only counts for 775k against the cap and has the potential to earn 3.25m in bonuses.
If he isnt healthy then he doesnt get the bonuses, if he is healthy and hits his bonuses then the 3.25m would count towards the bonus overages for next year where the cap is already going up.

Regardless, the fact that the bonus money would come out of next years cap makes it an easy Oilers W
Does it though? It's not like Edmonton will magically have more cap space next year. I do like that it's performance related because there's risk he's not the same player.

The team wont magically have more space next year but the cap is projected to up around 4m so at worst theyre spending that money from next year on this season. Even if he's not the same player then theyre paying 775k total on a defensively responsible forward to play in the bottom 6, there is no downside for Edmonton.
If he plays like a 4m player then he's compensated as such, if he plays like a league min player then he gets paid accordingly as well.
is this a contract that the league is gonna come back and look at? really curious what the milestones are for the performance bonus's and wondering if this is trying to get around the salary cap
if he hits all those bonuses, edm is screwed under cap next year, and that could be what pushes mcdavid out
The cap is going up. You go for it in the window you don’t think about worse case scenario and try to overpay a bunch of middle 6 players like the Yzerplan.

fair, that is what boston did, and if it werent for bob going on a run it may have worked
