Note: Reports prior to Sept 2023 were originally graded out of ten, and also included additional categories that have been merged into the current categories.
This likely results in the overall ratings prior to 2023 being decreased in comparison to reports since Sept 2023.

For an `Apples to Apples` comparison between players, we recommend only comparing reports before, or after, Sept 2023.
Results will average out accordingly as more data is accumulated.

Luke TuchLogo of the Montreal CanadiensLW222 of 2
A-
L4
Tuch finished his college career as part of the leadership group for Boston University. He ends the season with 10G-20A - contributing offense at even strength and the power-play. On the PP he generally set up around the crease - creating screens and looking for rebounds and tips. Heavy set. Hard to move off the play. At times Tuch displays a sneaky 'extra gear' in transition and the ability to gain the edge and take the play to the net. Consistent compete. Reliable hockey sense. Recognizes his responsibilities in all situations. Although he is heavy in the trenches he isn't a punishing body checker. Pushes but doesn't punish. Leans 4th line utility forward at the NHL level.Apr. 11, 2024Apr. 14, 2024
Lane HutsonLogo of the Montreal CanadiensLD206 of 6
A+
P2
At Boston University, especially in the second half of the 23/24 season, Hutson logged an incredible amount of ice time. Considering he was used sparingly on the penalty kill, his average TOI ranging from 22:00 - 26:00 per game is an outlier. Plays to a consistent identity. Dynamic playmaker. Sees the ice. Escapes pressure in small areas. Has the legs to lead zone exits on his own and attack off the rush. Extends plays in the offensive zone with his read/react/elite hockey sense. Leans distributor more than shooter - but always in motion looking for open space and prime shooting lanes to get pucks to the net on his own as well - Transitional NHL 'D' on the horizon - Power-Play quarterback List size is now up to 5'10 162 lbs. Average plus defender. Active stick. Gets 'inside and under' opponents sticks. Relentless compete. Never backs down.Apr. 11, 2024Apr. 12, 2024
Josh AndersonLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRW292 of 2

L3
Anderson's season has been uneven overall. His offensive numbers are down considerably - year over year Through the first 56GP - Anderson has contributed 7G- 9A He's (-18) defensively. A two-way power forward who's a solid skater and can be a threat off the rush at times. Best attribute is his battle game in the interior of the offensive zone. Averaging 16:05 TOI - Primary ice comes at ES and PP Signed through 26/27 - 5.5M AAV - 8 team no trade listFeb. 27, 2024Mar. 2, 2024
Tanner PearsonLogo of the Montreal CanadiensLW314 of 4
78
L3
Through 37GP - Pearson has scored a pedestrian 4G-6A. He continues to average right around 13:00 TOI. He's deployed in all situations - second PP unit. His (-12) rating has to be a concern in relation to his overall TOI in relation to this offensive element. Credited with 56 shots on goal - 38 hits - 30 shot blocks $3.25M cap hit - pending UFA - Skates at NHL pace and has some mid-range push back physically. Continues to lean 4th line / depth forward / more than consistent top 9 contributor offensively. Feb. 21, 2024Feb. 23, 2024
David SavardLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRD335 of 5
75
P3
Savard is a 33 year-old veteran defenceman who has one year left on his current contract that pays $3.5M through 24/25. Through 34GP he produced 4G-9A. Savard plays heavy match up minutes in Montreal. He averages 20 minutes per game at even strength and the PK … which speaks to his (-11) rating defensively … no easy shifts. Savard produces some depth offense, but he's mostly counted on to defend with some push back. He isn't a burner. In fact he's an average skater who relies on his hockey sense and read/react game to get in shooting lanes and block shots. He's been credited with 43 hits and 98 shot blocks. Feb. 21, 2024Feb. 23, 2024
Jayden StrubleLogo of the Montreal CanadiensLD226 of 6
79
P3
In 36GP - as of February 17th - Struble was averaging 15:57 TOI - 15:26 ES - clean up duty on special teams - 0:28 overall on the PK Solid pace. Keeping the game simple for the most part / low risk. Competitive. Physical. Engaged. Closes on opponents. Doesn't give away any free ice. 2-way 'D' - potentially more offense in time. For now he is getting his feet wet at the NHL level and earning the trust of his coaches. Matches up, generally, versus middle six opponents. On the rise. Room for his category ranking to improve as he gets more miles as a pro. Tracking positive overall.Feb. 15, 2024Feb. 17, 2024
Cole CaufieldLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRW234 of 4
82
L1
Caufield continues to play to his identity offensively. He's a shooter / goal scorer more than a natural play maker - but his distribution game has improved overall. Average defensively. Not the kind of forward the Habs will utilize in key defensive zone scenarios. Solid skater - more quick than fast - explodes out of the blocks - not a pure burner in open ice Elite release. Pucks are on and off his stick quickly and accurately. Requires very little room to deposit pucks bar down. Through 54GP he Caufield averaged 19:10 TOI - 15:24 ES - 3:45 PP - doesn't PK 19G - 26A - 45PTS (-1) 11G on PP High volume shot producer. Aggressive getting pucks on net. P1
On the rise. Trending towards being a consistent top pairing / '2-way D' Fantastic skater. Ability to escape pressure. Legs to lead the rush if he chooses. Plenty fast enough to add an extra layer off the rush. Understated offensive upside. Not being used on the PP regularly but capable if asked. Good size. Pushes back physically. Through 50GP - 4G - 10A -14PTS (-6) Averages 20:54 TOI - 18:39 ES - 0:14 PP - 2:00 PK Credited with 73 hits and 134 shot blocks Matches up against top six forward groups every night.Feb. 15, 2024Feb. 17, 2024
Juraj SlafkovskyLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRW197 of 7

Slowly rounding into form. His overall game is easier to identify this season. Playing with power and more awareness. Not absorbing the physical contact he did last year / putting himself in dangerous situations. Better spatial awareness overall. Heavy in the trenches. Hard to move off pucks below the goal line. Solid pace but he does tend to fall off a bit after 30 seconds. Still evolving at the NHL level. Mid-size 2-way 'D'. Has the legs, skill, and vision to transport the puck or recognize options via outlets Competes but gives away some leverage in the hard areas. Veteran forward who can still be used in a variety of roles. Impact ranges, but generally can be trusted in a secondary role on the PP and PK if required Willing to bump in the hard areas. Blocks shots in the defensive zone. High end of average pace. Potential to go on a streak and produce some depth offense in the bottom six forward group. Has had a tough run with injuries the last several seasons. Last year of contract. Pending UFA at end of season. Cap hit $3.25M. Averages around 21:00 per game TOI. Deployed at ES and PK. Veteran, right-shot 'D' who provides heavy lifting versus top skill forwards / opponents. Adequate skater - not fast - not slow - but big body who is difficult to maneuver around. Proficient shot blocker. Averages over 3 shot blocks per game - or 9 per 60:00 TOI. Any offense that he brings should be considered a bonus. Has struggled, at times, with injury. Signed through 24/25. AAV $3.5MJan. 4, 2024Jan. 5, 2024
Filip MesarLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRW194 of 4
A-
L2
Mesar is easy to identify. The Canadiens first round (26th) pick in 2022 is always in motion hunting offense. Mesar is a solid skater who is a threat off the rush and scores goals a variety of ways. He has a good release and the ability to score off the weak side flank on the power-play. He also has some elusive net drive when he sees an open lane. The 5'10 1765lbs forward plays a generally light game physically. He's a skill player who isn't as comfortable along the wall and in the trenches. Dec. 19, 2023Dec. 21, 2023
Lane HutsonLogo of the Montreal CanadiensLD194 of 6
A+
P2
Teams better not sleep on Hutson due to his smaller stature (5'10 161lbs). He's dynamic offensively. Hutson will quarterback one of team USA's power-play units. He's a dual threat who is equal parts shooter / distributor. Hutson is elusive with the puck on his stick. He has elite escape ability from his zone. He's also not shy defensively. Hutson has no problem closing quickly to kill plays in his zone. He has plenty of battle in his DNA.Dec. 21, 2023-
Jacob FowlerLogo of the Montreal CanadiensG192 of 2

1A
Fowler is a freshman at Boston College and their starting netminder. He posted at 2.16GAA and .925% before he left for Team USA WJC training camp. The 6'2 214lbs goaltender was selected in the third round (69th) at the entry draft in Nashville. Fowler is a proven winner at every level. He plays a butterfly style. He's big in the net and generally efficient. Rarely does he get caught moving outside his crease. When he does, he has the athleticism to regroup and make saves with his long legs. He has excellent feet and balance overall. At this stage of his development Fowler doesn't present any holes in his game. Dec. 21, 2023-
Owen BeckLogo of the Montreal CanadiensC195 of 5
A-
L2
Beck is a 'do it all' forward who can be used in all situations. The 6'0 190lbs, right shot, forward produces offense without sacrificing detail defensively. He's above the play when his group doesn't have control in the offensive zone. He can take key face-offs on both sides of the ice. Simply put, Beck is a trustworthy, 200ft, forward who skates well and has plenty of battle in his game. The Canadiens second-round pick (33rd) in 2022 will likely match up against top forwards and provide a layer of secondary offense for Team Canada. Dec. 19, 2023Dec. 21, 2023
Owen BeckLogo of the Montreal CanadiensC194 of 5
A-
L2
Beck is the kind of player who can be thrust into a variety of roles. Excellent in the face-off dot. Watch closely for him to turn his blade over when taking draws on his weak side. Starting with the puck in all three zones is important for teams at the WJC. He will be tasked with taking key draws. Leans shooter more than play maker. Tracks the entire 200ft. Sound skater. Plays the game with detail. He's above the play when his group doesn't have control in the offensive zone. He's a strong defender down low / locking onto his man in the defensive zone. Likely to provide better than secondary scoring at the NHL level. Not an elite 2nd line prospect but better than a 3rd line center on projection.Dec. 13, 2023Dec. 18, 2023
Samuel MontembeaultLogo of the Montreal CanadiensG274 of 4

1A
Montembeault was presented the challenge of having to battle for the net in Montreal this season, and earn a new contract for the future. He's accomplished both goals in recent weeks. He's appeared in 10 games in 23/24 and posted a 2.73 GAA and .910 save % overall. In his last five game segment (ending Nov 29th) his game went to another level. His save percentage was .931% over that span of games. Big in the net. Athletic. Crease composure / tracking / rebound control / overall focus has improved. Much more consistent. Has the ability to steal games for the Habs. Waiver pick up from the Florida Panthers who is trending towards being Habs #1A in future.Nov. 30, 2023Dec. 1, 2023

Montembeault is playing for a new contract. He's a pending UFA who the Canadiens would like to sign to an extension. He will be making his tenth start of the season versus Colorado. He's starting to separate himself from the goalie logjam in Montreal. His overall stats - 9GP - 4W -4L - 1OTL - 2.81 GAA - .908 save % Big in the net. Butterfly/Athletic style. Good feet. Above average gloves. Competes to make second / third stops. Full sixty minutes without giving up a 50/50 goal remains the challenge to get him to the next level of possibly being a full time #1. Scored 21 goals last season but he's struggled offensively to start the 23/24 season. Ironically, his overall TOI is up - year over year - Anderson is averaging 17:02 TOI - 13:09 ES - 3:42 PP - 0:10 PK - Middle bumper on PP - A physical presence who extends plays in the hard areas. Solid skater. Plays with a presence. Credited with 37 hits and 6 shot blocks in 19GP Hasn't scored a goal. Only has 2 assists ... but he has directed 42 shots on goal. Plays hard between the whistles. Makes sure opponents don't take liberties on smaller, skill players on Habs roster. Has enough game to skate on any one of the top three lines.Nov. 22, 2023Nov. 24, 2023
Cole CaufieldLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRW223 of 4

L1
Caufield has contributed offensively, and played to his identity, through his first 17GP. He's scored 5g-10a. Half of his production comes on the PP. He has 3 GWG. Caufield averages 19:02 TOI - 14:36 ES - 4:25 PP. Taking a closer look at his overall game reveals a very streaky scorer who has only (1) goal in his last 10GP ... and it came on the PP. He has 6 assists in the segment ... 3 at ES and 3 on the PP. Monitor his impact at even strength. His battle. His vision to find open space. His catch and release directing pucks on net. He's a goal scorer who thrives on the PP, but the Habs could use more from him at ES.Nov. 16, 2023Nov. 18, 2023
Juraj SlafkovskyLogo of the Montreal CanadiensRW196 of 7
77
L2
Although his offense has been slow to arrive at the NHL level, Slafkovsky is evolving in several other categories. Through thirteen games he's averaging 14:40 TOI - 12:15 ES - 2:23 PP He's only scored 1G - 1A, but he's been credited with 21 hits and 11 shot blocks Slafkovsky is leaner than he was when he was drafted first overall in 2022. He's ten pounds lighter. It's clear that his fitness has changed. He has prepared differently and it has gone to his legs. His straight line skating is explosive. He easily tracks up and down the full 200ft. His spatial awareness has also improved. He's more aware of his surroundings. He's not exposing himself to heavy contact as much as last year. In order for his offense to go to another level he needs to recognize he's a big body with a long reach. His catch and release needs to be quicker. He can't afford to take an extra step off the flank, or between the dots in the offensive zone. He needs to get pucks on net immediately and follow up on rebounds. There's been a ton of growth in categories most fans of the game don't recognize. Gaining the edge off the rush, and asserting himself off the cycle / taking more plays to the net is the next area to monitor.Nov. 9, 2023Nov. 10, 2023
Michael MathesonLogo of the Montreal CanadiensLD292 of 2

P1
Sometimes players take time to settle in with new teams. It takes a year, sometimes more, to earn the trust of the organization and their coaching staff. Matheson is on his third NHL team, and it happens to be his home town club in Montreal. He's part of the leadership group of this young team. Matheson has always been an elite skater. He's capable of leading the rush or joining as an extra layer offensively. Defensively he's quick to space. If he does get caught up ice he has the quickness to track back and catch the play / defend his zone. Matheson isn't a perfect player, nobody is, but his impact his being felt throughout the Canadiens lineup. He's producing offense and being deployed in all situations. He matches up against all of the top players from the opposition. Arrives in Montreal after missing most of last season with injury in Vancouver. Veteran goal scorer. Should provide some leadership to the younger prospects. His last full season was (21/22). Has the hockey IQ, and commitment, to be used in a variety of roles. Not a punishing forward, but capable of taking a bump along the wall to extend plays. Has an accurate release. Leans shooter more than distributor. When he gets a look at the net he looks to get the puck on net ASAP. Might take some time to get his legs under him again but if he approaches the way he played two years ago he will be used in all situations.Oct. 11, 2023Oct. 12, 2023

Veteran / right shot / defenceman who does a lot of the heavy lifting for Montreal In (22/23) he averaged 22:23 TOI. Almost all of his ice time comes at ES and PK. He matches up all night versus top six opponents and rolls over the boards as part of the primary penalty killing unit. Skating is average for the NHL game but he makes up for it by understanding his limitations and keeping the game simple. On the PK he rarely rotates to far out of position - electing to keep the play to the perimeter and defend between the hash marks. Credited with only 61 hits last season - but his 176 shot blocks led the team. A mostly 'Defensive D' who does occasionally chip in with the offense.Sep. 29, 2023Oct. 5, 2023

One of the biggest surprises for Montreal in (22/23) Played 51 games before sustaining injury Established himself as one of the toughest customers in the entire NHL. Huge frame. Physical. Punishes opponents. Never backs down from a challenge. Averaged 15:16 TOI - with the majority of his ice time coming at ES and PP. Rarely used on the PK. Has a deceptive / heavy shot from distance. Capable role on PP#2. Reliable distributor at ES and PP. Still developing. Hard match-ups on the road (especially) can be a challenge at times. Has the potential to be a top pairing NHL 'D' in time. His first NHL training camp in Montreal went as well as could be expected. Pinches down appropriately in the offensive zone. Has the size and length to keep opponents to the perimeter. Big. Strong. Smart. Right shot. Montreal doesn't have to rush him. His upside will be determined by how much more strength and power he adds.Feb. 2, 2022Jul. 3, 2022

Size will be the discussion. If he can add 20lbs in the coming years he will have no problem at the NHL level. More of a distributor than shooter. He seems to have the puck on his stick every shift. Makes plays. Sees the ice. Elite vision overall. He can lead the rush or join it as an extra layer. His ability to spin off checks and make plays is exceptional. High end Hockey IQ and three zone awareness. He jumps to space quicker than opponents and relies on an active stick defensively.Mar. 27, 2022Jul. 2, 2022

Playing in the 'SHL' for 'Frolunda' his AVG TOI ranged from (12:30) - (19:50) in 21/22 season Deployed at (ES) and (PP). Does not (PK) in the SHL. Reliable defender at (ES) A distributor on the (PP). He wastes little time with the puck on his stick. He sees the ice and makes quick, accurate puck plays. Much more of a distributor than a shooter. A good skater. Quick out of the gate. He's agile. His read/react game is sound. Solid hockey IQ. Not much of a physical element but he will take a hit to make a play. Steady 2-way 'D'Apr. 1, 2022Jul. 2, 2022

High end offense. He scores equally at home and on the road. His game has grown month / month this year. In the month of March 2022 his production went to a season high (14GP-6G-18A-24pts). His ability to spin off pressure is excellent. Quick stick passing and shooting the puck. Sees the ice. In the offensive zone he thinks plays ahead of time (has a plan) Defensively he is responsible enough to take draws in his zone. Great stick. Not shy about driving to the middle of the ice and making plays in traffic. Moves well. Room for strength.Apr. 1, 2022Jul. 2, 2022

An undersized quick, fast, and skilled forward who plays his off-wing. Filip is dangerous off the rush. He transports the puck effectively and looks to create offense. At times he will use the entire width of the ice off the attack which makes him more difficult to defend but also a challenge to skate with on on the same line. On the PP he is equal parts distributor and shooter. His opens up from the flank and has a quick release. He's light along the boards and in traffic. Line mates will have to do the heavy lifting. He is not a player who will extend plays in the hard areas. Pure offense. Lacks detail defensively. The kind of player who values space. Off the rush he uses the entire width of the ice then uses his quickness to jump to the middle of the ice and get pucks to the net. On the PP he is equal parts distributor / shooter coming from the weak side. Not the kind of player who will extend plays in the hard areas. Quick release in traffic is attractive element. Easy to identify is potential upside.Apr. 2, 2022Jul. 2, 2022

There have been times in his developoment that he has scored in streaks. Juraj excelled playing against his own age group, had a fantastic Olympics, and contributed in Liiga before ending his season with an excellent showing at the Men's World Championships. A big body / power forward frame. A sound skater who has shown more attack off the rush as the season progressed. He uses his strength to extend plays along the boards and takes pucks to the net. His three zone detail and awareness is also reliable. Top 6 / Top 3 NHL forward.Apr. 25, 2022Jul. 1, 2022

A big, strong, physical defender who plays with a presence. Arber has the hockey IQ to be deployed in a variety of roles. As a pro he could provide some secondary offense. He distributes well and can shoot the puck accurately from long range. Defensively he takes away time and space with his size and leverage. In time he could develop into a top 4 NHL defenderJun. 29, 2022Jun. 30, 2022

Plays to his identity. A hard nosed 2-way 'D' who is being used upwards of 20:00 per game in all situations at the college level. As a pro he is not likely to contribute on the (PP). Good skater. Explosive. Fast on a straight line heading out of his zone or tracking back on pucks. Capable with the puck but not elite. High end compete. Physical element. Battles. Could end up being a solid #4 at the NHL level.Mar. 18, 2022Apr. 4, 2022

Complete player / prospect. A leader. Potentially a top pairing 'D' who can be deployed in all situations. He's big, agile and aggressive. Gaps up defending his blue line. Detailed. Competitive. Engaged. He battles. Offensively he is capable of moving pucks and joining the play. Hard and accurate release from distance. He gets pucks to the net. In a tight race for top scorer in the 'Q' Year over year his avg. PPG (0.73 / 1.0 / 1.83). An interesting statistic that has remained constant is his shooting %. His year over year shot generation (125 / 143 / 246 ) resulting in scoring % ( 12.8 / 15.4 / 15.4 ). His element is offense. He has been described as more shooter than distributor but he has been more of a playmaker overall this season. Skating is sound. At times he shows an extra gear. Three zone detail and commitment will need to improve as he turns pro. His role will be (ES/PPApr. 2, 2022Apr. 3, 2022

He has the knack to score goals at key times of the game. The game is about scoring goals and he fits the role. As F1 on the forecheck he has the ability to pressure the puck and create turnovers. Some bump to his game but he creates confusion with his quickness to take away time and space. Undersize skill forward who sees the ice and makes plays. His IQ with the puck on his stick is high end. Taking pucks off the wall in his zone he surveys options and makes sound decisions. On the (PP) he is comfortable in motion, making plays from the top of the zone or utilized as the middle bumper. Quick release when he gets puck on his stick in scoring areas. Quick out of the gate. Very good freshman year at OSU. A big body / butterfly goalie. Above average feet for his stature. Moves adequately. Not the quickest laterally but he makes up for it by being big in the net. Glove hand is average plus. At times he swats at the puck instead of absorbing it. Low blocker (around knee high) is an area of weakness that requires attention. Plays the puck very well. Can outlet long range. When he is on his game he doesn't stray outside the paint or his posts. Gets into trouble when he ranges to far tracking pucks side to side. Trending up. AVG TOI hovered close to (20:00) this season overall. Used in all situations. On the PP can skate pucks up ice and lead the PP B/O. When he gets a look at the net he directs pucks on net from range. Rarely takes a slap shot. Quick release snap and wrist shot. Capable distributor. At ES and on the PK he doesn't give away space in his end for free. Closes on opponents. Has an edge. Plays to the line and sometimes over it. A physical, 2-way D. Lower end secondary offense. Hard nosed. Pro style approach.Mar. 12, 2022Mar. 28, 2022
