You still need goalies to put up .915 save % or better to have a better probability of winning the cup. Could say Vegas got lucky Hill put up a random .932 save %
Sure the Devils can roll out Kahkonen and Allen, but don’t be surprised if they don’t last 4 round in the playoffs. But if the Devils out-score their problems, then I’d be wrong as well
My philosophy is there is very few goalies I can really trust. Most are a basic crapshoot. Igor Shesterkin is one of those few goalies. If he was out there, I'd pay the moon for him.
But other than that, I'd rather build a roster that will be as good as possible for as long as possible, and then try to fill the goalie in afterwards.
-If you find a Swayman or a Shesterkin type in the late rounds like so often happens, fantastic!!
-if you can ride a hot goalie who's otherwise mediocre, fantastic!!
-If you have to buy short term fixes like Colorado did to fill those gaps in and it gets you the success you need, fantastic!!
But no matter how high caliber a goalie you buy, It really doesn't guarantee top tier goaltending. Has it really ever worked, besides Roy, a top 3 goalie of all time?
Heck, Detroit tried to buy Hasek after he won 6 vezina's in 8 years and it didn't work.
Cory Schneider was about as high caliber, perfect aged goalie as you can get. 1st in SV%, 1st in GAA. 3 years of incredible play later and injuries still caught up to him at age 30.
