Description
NOTE DEVILS FANS: I am having a hard time gauging Holtz's value right now. Obviously I know Ruff didn't really like Holtz and didn't give him good minutes. I also know Holtz had some solid 5v5 numbers this season. So I've given this as a starting point. A 2nd in this draft, a 2nd round pick from last year's draft, and a roster player that performs really well in a bottom 6 role with retained salary. Please let me know what you think and give me some counter offers back if you don't like it.

They probably just keep Holtz or else package him for a significant roster upgrade.

Ok I get the Raymond-Holtz junior connection but that's not enough to acquire Holtz.

Ya I kinda figured that, I put in my description that this was a starting point cuz I was having a hard time gauging his value. What do you think it would take?

I'm not sure what the Devils needs are.

But I don't think cap dump Fabbri would be part of it.

Cleveland is too far away to project.

I'm not sure what he'll be.

At 50% retained I don't consider Fabbri a cap dump, I consider him a useful bottom 6 roster player. I agree Cleveland is too tough to project right now, I think he'll be a really solid 4-6 dman in an NHL lineup in a few years.

Fabbri is useful as long as he's healthy.

He can still score.

But if I'm NJ I'm not swapping out Holtz for a guy who's had 3 knee surgeries.

I agree, that's why I've got 2 seconds in there too. This is all on the presumption that Holtz and NJ just wanna move on. But I would imagine with a new head coach Holtz will get some better looks next year

There’s a ton of problems with a Holtz trade TBH from an NJ standpoint.. Jersey isn’t moving him for a depth piece or a future draft pick. I agree his value has fallen to a degree but he still had a decent year considering his usage so there is uncertainty in value there but the real issue for most teams trying to acquire him is that NJ is only looking for a goalie or a top 6 power forward for him. Those are really the only pieces NJ could be enticed to trade for, NJ isn’t going to accept an offer just because it’s there value wise, it’s gotta be something that will plug a hole for the team they have now. NJ would absolutely have to add in either of those cases if the player is elite but that’s fine for NJ

Ehh, he's going into his D+5 and hasn't shown much of anything at the NHL level. His D+4 performance wasn't all that different from Filip Zadina's.

NJD probably wants to move him as part of a package, and there's no point in Detroit taking him on for a 2nd that they can draft and develop from "Scratch".

That's a totally fair assessment and the EXACT response I was looking for on this. I just genuinely couldn't overly gauge NJs needs outside of a goalie so I just went strictly value wise and maybe still ended up on the low end. So I really appreciate the insight on that. Might work on a revised one in a bit so hopefully I'll see you on that one too lol.

Red Wings have enough talented prospects who should become good NHLers.

I don't think they need to be scouring other teams prospects.

Yzerman and his guys will do their due diligence of course if a player they like become available.

I don't know how "available" Holtz really is?

Holtz is tricky one to evaluate since Lindy stuck him on 4th line with wither away. But his scoring rates, even without much PP time or playing with Hughes or Hischier, were still promising. The shot is nasty. The play-making has its moments, but not consistent. There are still some wrinkles to iron out, such as puck protection in transition. But with another year on ELC, there is no pressing need to move him.

NJD only trade Holtz if it returns (a) an upgrade on blueline; (b) a goalie; (c) anyone named Moritz; in no particular order.

Totally a fair assessment and I appreciate it! You can't have mortiz tho aha

I felt odd throwing Cleveland in there because obviously you guys have Nemec Hughes and Hamilton on the backend and that's unreal. I put him in there moreso as a "hey we're gonna need some guys to play in that 4-6 role in the future, can't hurt to have one of those in the pipeline outside of Casey"

Ultimately I think you are right, they shouldn't be in the rush to move holtz cuz he does look promising. This was moreso a scenario where team and player decide a fresh start is needed.

Jake Walman would be an interesting target imo. I don’t think I’d give up Holtz for him without some kind of add from Detroit and Detroit shouldn’t be looking to move him

D+4 5v5 P/60 rates
Holtz: 1.87
Zadina: 0.96

For point of reference, for 2023-24
Debrincat 2.23
Larkin 1.95
Compher 1.75
Perron 1.69
Fabbri 1.67

Holtz may not be taking the world by storm....but he is a lot better than Zadina.
