Don’t see anything wrong with cheap depth that is familiar with the system

DeMelo is a big RD right in his prime.
I'm sure he loves playing for the Jets but he's going to be trying to cash in on a retirement deal this summer.
Top 4D always get paid in UFA.
Ben Chiarot got 4.75 mil and Justin Holl got 3.2!
They're not even top 4D! 😬
Matt Roy will be getting the Brinks Truck as well for the same reasons as DeMelo.
Edit: You edited Roy ok.</div></div>
I never edited Roy, that was what I proposed the entire time for him
But yeah that’s a good point about DeMelo, I’ll take it into consideration going forward!

Leafs Rumours
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Not likely that Treliving pays Matt Roy 6.25M. Something in the 4.25-5Mx4 range is more reasonable, same for DeMelo. Bertuzzi would need at least 4-years probably (5.75MX3 is under 20M). I think he was looking for 6-6.5Mx6 last year, so I would imagine for him to sign, he'll need a 25-30M contract this year. He might take the deal that you proposed if he thinks he can get a bigger payday at 32.</div></div>
Fair enough, thanks for the feedback I’ll take it into consideration for the future!!

Leafs Rumours
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>The odds of a team trading for a large contract at the draft or prior to most of the large UFAs signing is very slim.
Why? Well as nice as it is to map out all of these extra signings you can do with the cap space, other teams are exploring those options and going hey we can probably address our needs with our cap space instead of having to trade a core piece and future assets to bring a guy in.
I’ll give you that Marner is likely a bit of an exception given the caliber of player he is. But with that, teams likely are wary of what that players production would be A. In a different system and B. Without the caliber of forward talent the player is currently surrounded by.
This doesn’t factor in either that Marner pretty much holds all of the chips in his hand with the NMC, and with it taking him right to UFA, he can pretty much decide where he’d go.
The one benefit for you in this hypothetical is there is a hypothetical where Saros is expendable. I’m not sure if Marner would re-sign in Nashville though with them banking on rookie goaltending with a lesser roster than the team he came from doing the same with a better roster.</div></div>
Fair enough, thanks for your input! I appreciate the feedback and will look at this more

He is higher on the center depth chart than Minten (not as high of potential but closer to reaching his).
I'd be shocked if he didn't get some games in the NHL and wouldn't be surprised if he got a job out of camp or earned a place on the roster during the season.
Out of the names you provided, Webber will be the 7-9th D so likely to get games. Niemla could honestly be traded, he isn't going to be a stud and even if he hit his potential today he's at best a Lili replacement if Lili flops. But he could get games if he's in the organization.</div></div>
I agree on Quillan, I think he could make an impact quicker than a lot of people realize. I just listed those names bc they’re defence and I think that’s more of a weakness than F right now so they have more of a chance for more callups.

I think if LA moves on from Roy, the Leafs should be all over him for a 5-6 year deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>See this is where Bias and not looking at the bigger picture comes in
At the time Kadri was traded people all over the NHL praised the return
Barrie was a offensive weapon with the Avs giving them around 50 points and 10 goals a season and Kerfoot was a 40+ point young C for them. And considering how much Kerfoot influenced this teams bottom 6 and PK and when he left the numbers dropped pretty evident. For Barrie Babcock pretty much almost ruined the guy. Could we have gotten better sure but Kadri had hurt his rep with suspensions and his trade protection didnt help. Sounds like someone else we know minus the suspensions
For Marleau had to move him as Marner was due for a new deal. Maybe could have done it for 2 2nds or 2nd + 3rd but would still have not been cheap
Why would we have traded JVR and Bozak when in 2017-2018 Leafs were having their best season at the time (105 points) and can apply the same to Gardiner to
Like I get it but competing teams dont trade their pending UFA's. Did TBL trade Stamkos?, did NYI trade JT?, did CBJ trade Panarin or CGY Gaudreau?
These are the risks competing teams go through year in and out
The only guys I will agree were Boyle and Plekenic thats it</div></div>
The cap hit for Marleau was insane with the term too, I think the signing was a mistake for the price and I love Marleau.
Zaitsev contract was bad too don't forget

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>One thing that really gets overlooked when judging the organization/Shanahan is how poorly they handled the years after drafting Matthews.
From 2017-2021 when Matthews was 19-23 the Leafs:
1. Let Kadri go for no substantial return (Could have got a 1st+)
2. Traded a 1st to dump Marleau
3. Traded a 2nd for 2 months of Plekanec
4. Traded a 2nd for 2 months of Boyle
5. Let Bozak walk (Could have got a 1st+)
6. Let JVR walk (Could have got a 1st+)
7. Let Gardiner walk (Could have got a 2nd)
8. Signed Zaitsev to a deal that cost use Brown
If the team had continued to remain commited to the rebuild and longterm, even just through the end of the 2018 season (thats two years of Matthews career where they don't prioritize winning). Today we'd have 4 more 1st round picks, 3 more 2nd round picks. This is the depth/trade pieces/capital/etc. that we've been missing.
I really think Shanahan's failures go way beyond his commitment to the core 4. He drafted three studs in his first three years as President but I don't think any other decision he's made is beyond criticism and with hindsight they are pretty much all wrong. From hiring Babcock to firing Lou, hiring Dubas, hiring Keefe, going for it in Matthews first few seasons, Kadri trade, Contract negotiations, team building strategy, all failures.</div></div>
1. Dubas
2. Lamoriello (Signed) Dubas (Dumped)
3. Lamoriello
4. Lamoriello
5. Dubas
6. Dubas
7. Dubas
8. Lamoriello
TLDR: Dubas loves letting guys walk for nothing, but Lamoriello seems to love giving horrible contracts that takes assets to dump and overpays on trades

Yep. It has been real frustrating looking back on all the players/picks/assets we've missed over dumb decisions.
