Fair enough, it did seem a bit unlikely, but I've spoken to a couple Flames fans who would.

The Athletics post lottery Mock
I like it for the Habs. There are four forwards I'd be okay with at 5 once Celebrini, Demidov, and Lindstrom are gone, so trading down to 9 makes a lot of sense and a late 1st is decent compensation. I wonder how high they could get by packaging together the Winnipeg and Vancouver 1sts.
Buium is a good pick if that's who the Flames want. I'd be a little wary about star NCAA defencemen if I were them, and trading up to avoid Iginla is a bit odd in a way, but it could be a good call.

Guessing Montreal's List Based on the TSN Article
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Z0ra</b></div><div>The three people that Montreal is currently high on are:
Demidov
Lindstrom
Iginla
Normally Montreal values hockey sense, compete, and character in their prospects. The three that make the most sense are Iginla, Sennecke, and Stiga. Yes Montreal has been drafting bigger prospects, but those 3 things are what Hughes and company value the most.
Lindstrom doesn't make a lot of sense for the Canadiens given his compete level in the playoffs, I didn't like the way he played. Demidov is from Russia and he would 100% be the pick if he's available. Montreal would have to win the lottery in order to get him. Iginla checks all the boxes: goal-scorer, physical player, but also has the hockey sense, character (Jarome's son), and compete (had a solid U18 and was the driving force for Kelowna).
But the question is, how do you know that certain players have met with Montreal?</div></div>
I think Stiga will be out of consideration for the same reason that Catton is; Habs management want to enough big, skilled forwards to support their smaller guys in the playoffs. Also, it's not impossible to imagine Stiga falling to the Winnipeg pick (even if some other teams would be making a mistake in letting it happen).
As for Lindstrom, I don't want to be too harsh on his playoff performance, since he was definitely still dealing with injury. Of course, that's cause for some concern itself, but every option after Celebrini comes with its own set of trade-offs. I do think there's a fit for him on the Habs playing on Dach's wing. He's strong in the face-off dot even though he's more of a natural winger, so he could split face-off duties with Dach. Lindstrom's more of a shooter while Dach is more of a playmaker, and their combined size could be difficult for teams to handle.
To answer your question, all my knowledge on that front comes from media reports throughout the season. Obviously, we can't know that they didn't talk with other prospects, but I'm using the information that we do have as best as I can.

Based on recent draft history - with explanations
Putting aside that 5OA is way too high for Boisvert, Montreal don't take low-pace forwards. If Montreal were to make a genuinely shocking forward selection, my guess would be Sennecke.

It's a random simulation; I just took what the site gave me. Not really predicting that or hoping for the Devils to move up (though I'd be okay with it if the Habs moved up as well)

Celebrini and Sennecke is the draft I dream about for the Habs. On the production front, Sennecke had an unremarkable season for his talent level, but he's up to 15 points in 10 playoff games, which puts him 2nd in playoff ppg among CHLers in their draft year.
I agree that Lindstrom is the perfect fit for New Jersey, and Levshunov makes a ton of sense for the Sharks if they drop.
Buffalo reaching for another LHD would be unexpected, but it wouldn't be an NHL draft without something weird happening, and the rest of the picks all make sense to me. It's nice to see so many steals and reaches that look actually plausible.

First 2024 Mock with Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Gotta love and appreciate the effort on this one, seems like you did your research on everything well.
That being said, I don’t see Igor Chernyshov being high on Toronto’s list - at least the people I know that work for the team haven’t mentioned his name a lot.
Treliving typically doesn’t draft a lot of Russians and Chernyshov doesn’t fit his style of play. He’s more of a skilled playmaker and perimetre player whereas Treliving values the bigger, stronger, meaner guys earlier on in the draft and typically saves the skilled players for later in the draft as project picks.
I’ve heard they’re keeping an eye on Charlie Elick - a big, strong skating right handed defender playing for Brandon in the WHL. & that seems to not only fit Treliving’s draft history style, but also the team needs. Elick should eventually round out as a solid #3 or #4 defender that plays a push back style game - it’s something the Leafs don’t have a single prospect in the system that plays that way at that position so I gotta believe my sources are right that Elick is high on their board. If he’s available, gotta think Treliving runs to the podium to get him</div></div>
Elick is already gone at 15 in the mock though. Maybe Badinka would be a good alternative.
Also, Chernyshov is 6'2", 192lbs, so hardly a small guy.

Great work on the analysis; I always learn a thing or two when I read through your draft lists. As a Habs fan, I'm happy to hear that the Hawks are looking at defensemen.
Utah with Celebrini would be very dangerous in a few years.
The picks all make sense to me, though I can't see Sennecke or Hage making it out of the 1st round at this point. I have them both in my top 20, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go even higher than that.
Other people have already pointed out some of the issues with your mock trades, but I can see the two pick swaps happening (probably with more compensation coming from the teams moving up though).

Predictions vs Reality in the 2023-3024 Season

Here's to hoping next season, with the addition of Cutter, we move up to 4/5 in the Pacific. Calgary and Seattle should be catchable to jump up.</div></div>
Yeah, I think you guys are well on track to be competitive in ~2 years. Next year should be more fun than this year at least.

Buyout Anderson and Dvorak
Habs don't need the money now and don't want the cap penalty for Anderson on the books for three extra years. Send him to the AHL and wait for 2026 to buy him out. Dvorak buyout makes no sense, he isn't even on that bad of a contract.
Habs can't afford to add all those contracts, they would run out of money in the next two years between Slaf, Guhle, Dach, Reinbacher, and Hutson needing raises.

This would make sense if the Habs were desperate for cap space. Maybe if they add a big free agency signing or trade acquisition, but as it stands, it doesn't really work.

No, retention remains even if a player rejoins the retaining team, so we would have both Petry and the Petry retention as separate entities at that point.

Thanks!
And thanks for the tip. I do like Stiga, though anywhere in the top 16 would be a big risk in my eyes. I think he could be in the mold of a Yanni Gourde if he develops properly, but that's a long development path with lots of room to go sideways.
