Thread:
Marner for Saros
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>McJoe7</b></div><div>you have the same comment in a bunch of threads. I am curious if you think Nashville should trade for Marner and what you think Nashville should trade for him. I think there's probably a version where Nashville has a lot of really solid middle of the lineup type forward prospects, so if they can compile some of those guys with some picks and maybe the Leafs want like Fabbro or Lauzon or even McDonagh in a weird version and then the Leafs move some of that stuff to Calgary for Markstrom or Anaheim for Gibson but I'm curious what you actually think other than your copy and pasted comment lol.</div></div>
Fair enough, I'm just tired of the same Saros/Marner posts so I figured I'd just copy and paste the same comment so eventually it might sink in.
I would make an offer for Marner for sure, I'd even be interested in JT (50% retained). I would include the 2024 1st but not interested in paying Marners bonus so would have to be after July 1 meaning no 2024 picks. I'd look at any combination of:
2025 1st(s)/picks, Schaefer, Lind, Tomasino, Parssinen, Prokop, Wood Glass (I know he's not a future but Glass + for JT retained I think could work to save TOR money and garner some assets), Lauzon (I think he's the kind of defender TOR could use on the back end). Most/all of these guys are young enough to continue to develop and would help fill out the rest of the Leafs roster without loading all the money into 4 players. Plus the rest of what won't be deployed can be flipped for a goaltender from a rebuilding/retooling team and maybe another defender.
I'd include Fabbro here as well but I'm hoping Trotz makes a hail mary with CGY for Andersson with him and the 2024 1st++.
The goalie succession of Saros/Askarov lines up perfectly with both having 1 year remaining giving Askarov the year to learn directly under Saros and potentially overtake him naturally. I feel that, at the bare minimum, Nashville needs to start the season with both Saros and Askarov for this very reason.
If Nashville could bring in Marner, 50% JT, & Andersson this offseason using mostly the futures assets we currently possess I would be ecstatic. We would deplete plenty of our assets making these moves but would make us much stronger going into next season and possibly the subsequent seasons that follow.
Does this satisfy your curiosity? lol

Nope, but what you can have for Marner is a package of futures to send elsewhere for the goalie you desire.

Not my trade - read 1st comment before going off
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jeff902</b></div><div>To be 100% clear, I am not proposing this. I saw it on a few message boards.
It is reported that NJ's pick is up for trade, and was suggested they needed more depth and toughness on the back end, and this proposal made it out to the talking head pages.
I know NJ fans will say not likely, and some Habs fans will say that Wifi is not for sale.
I like Wifi, but the plethora of young depth on the LD means someone will have to go (I say both Guhle and Hutson should not be considered). Neither Harris, nor Stuble will fetch 10 OA, honestly, depending on who is left on the board I am not sure Wifi gets the deal done without adding another piece.
Habs fans: If Ignila, Catton, or other A-prospects were somehow available at 10, would you be tempted to accept this?
NJ fans, and Habs haters: would more need to be added to this to get it over the line - what reasonable piece would you add?</div></div>
Personally, value aside, I would not do this because the same reason Wifi would be coveted elsewhere is exactly why he is coveted here.
I get that the 10OA player would more than likely have more tools in the toolbox but I'm not going to fill one hole while digging another.
The grit and toughness, while being a viable NHL defenseman is exactly what is needed for any perennial contender (which MTL is shaping up to become in the future).
Would I be tempted? Sure. Would I do it? Not likely.
I don't like the idea of moving what should be a staple on our backend that other teams must equate for in any game or series. Wifi is the kind of player that breaks down opponents physically on a regular basis, I'd also hate to have to go against him in any circumstance.
IF he were to get traded, I would hope he heads West where we'd only have to beat him in the SCF.

I'd move prospects for Marner before ever moving Saros for him, maybe not Molendyk but definitely prospects.

Why add Myers to give away Barron? Just sign Barron.
Matheson for 10 OA, the rest is too much.
That's a lot going to NYI imo, could be cleaned up and a couple assets dropped. Send back a retained Dvorak.
Harris gets more or Harris stays/gets packaged.

Kings - Preds
This is worse than all the Marner to Nashville for Saros trades that will never happen. We will run a Saros/Askarov tandem to start the year at the very least, the succession of goaltenders lines up perfectly.

Montreal is not moving the Xhekaj's but the value favours Montreal in that offer imo. Still, don't see it as a deal that gets made.

Marner to Nashville
These trades never work for Nashville. We're not moving the goalie we could compete with for a winger you couldn't. I wouldn't mind Marner in Nashville, but for other pieces. He's not an organizational need and the move does not logically make sense. There are lots of picks and prospects in Nashville's system who may be available for the right return. Package some of them together, add in a 50% retained JT, and flip the assets you receive to another team interested in moving you a top goaltender.

Eiserman or Connelly
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Element23VM</b></div><div>Your odd man out is whoever other teams are asking for. Nobody's asking for a smallish left shot guy unless a team sorely lacks depth breakout guys. The guys other teams will ask for are Xhekaj, because he's big and physical, which is exactly what a lot of teams want in their bottom 4 D in the playoffs, and Matheson because he can run a power play and that might be in high demand in the offseason.
What Barron has going for him is that he isn't small and he's right shot, and he'll be good in a 4-5 spot in a year or two.</div></div>
Our odd man out is whoever our odd man out is, doesn't matter who's asking for who if he's going to be the one we've made available. Not acknowledging his value would be supplementary to this point. If there isn't a team specifically interested at this time then we play him on his off side or include him in a larger package. This does not mean we move someone we do not wish to move simply because another team is going to dictate our moves for us.
