sorry but that's a ridiculous over pay on both Holtby and Backstrom. Holtby would most likely get dealt to develop Samsonov anyway, and Backstrom wants nothing more that to complete his career in DC and raise his family. He's said many times he wouldn't stand in the way of having a competitive team as his career winds down and that DC is the home for him.

Sign Backie to a 5 x $7.5M deal and you've got a HoF caliber guy at a solid team friendly price. He wants security over money.
Ovi could also get a matching 5 x $8M to go on his terms obviously as a Capital.

Keeping Holtby is unlikely even at his current $6.1M

On Holtby, I probably agree with you. Backstrom, though? Probably an underpay when it comes to term. He's very nearly a career point-per-game player and will have played on possibly the best contract in hockey for a decade. $9.25mil is a hometown discount based on where the salary cap will be. If the Caps don't give him the term, you better believe someone will empty a vault out for him. Of everyone that's played at least 550 games since he signed his current contract (2010-11; 160 players overall), he's 2nd in assists, 8th in points, 7th in points per game, and 13th in faceoffs taken.
