Description
The only way that Pavel Datsyuk can sign a contract with a KHL team is to "retire" from the NHL (i.e pull a Kovalchuk). Since Datsyuk is over 35 and has another year left on his contract, this would invoke the 'Cap Advantage Recapture Penalty' (which is explained really well here: https://slappersandstats.com/2016/02/09/the-cap-advantage-recapture-penalty-what-it-is-and-why-it-matters/). The C.A.R.P on the Red Wings would be $2 Million for 1 year, because the team has derived a net 'Cap Advantage' (the difference between how much they've paid Datsyuk and what his Cap Hit is) is currently $2M, and Pavel has 1 year left on his contract. I simulated this by trading away Datsyuk and creating a fictional player representing Detroit's C.A.R.P. I encourage to use these moves as a format for realistically representing Datsyuk's departure in your own Armchair GM rosters.

The full amount counts against the cap because it's a 35+ contract. End of story.

Hi, Slappers and Stats author here. Thanks for referencing my article! However, as others have mentioned, the CARP is not invoked in this situation. As mentioned near the end of my article:

Quote:

1. It can only be triggered by contracts signed prior to 9/15/12.

2. It can only be triggered by contracts that are 6+ years long.

3. The only early termination of a contract that will not trigger the CARP is by death of the player.

Datsyuk's contract was signed in June 2013 and only carried a 3-year term. So it is not subject to CARP. Instead, the full cap hit of Datsyuk's contract will count against the Detroit Red Wings, in accordance with Article 50 of the CBA [specifically, see Sections 50.2(c), 50.5(d)(i)(B)], unless they trade his contract to another team.

Was this only to show an untrue scenario based on one contract? Didn't feel the need to fill in the rest of the team or anything like that?
