Description

Sign a UFA forward (Duchene). Trade a top 6 forward (Drouin) in a package for a top 4 D (Gostisbehere).

Used evolving wild's contract projections as a guide. Went lower for the RFA's. They project Duchene to sign at $8M for a 7 year deal, although it could take $8.75M. I would be cautious if that is indeed what it takes. $8M is worth it IMO, $8.75M is pushing it when the habs have many young players coming that will need paid.

Didn't go after a backup goalie. The habs have Lindgren (career .912 sv% in the NHL), McNiven (2016-17 CHL Goalie of the year), and Primeau (2018-19 NCAA Goalie of the year). Signing a backup goalie would push Lindgren into the AHL and limit the development of all 3 goalies. As insurance I decided to sign Conner LaCouvee (Better .sv% than both McNiven and Lindgren in Laval last season.) Worst case scenario the habs trade for a backup goalie or claim one of waivers if necessary.
