Description
Let me start by saying: as a fan, I hate this idea. That said, it makes far too much sense. The Sabres aren't close to be a contender. They might not even be one or even two trades away from being a playoff team (considering the current GM). And I'd argue making those trades now would be a bad idea anyway. With the expansion draft following the 2021 season, you'd be making sure you lose a more talented player.

So, that said, what should be done? Do nothing. Double down on the tank for one more year and overpay some of the less desirable UFAs on one year deals with the understanding that they'll get more opportunity and a trade to a contender at the deadline. So sacrifice the 2020 season to put yourself in the position to take advantage of other teams in danger of losing quality players to the expansion draft for nothing. All the while, get some assets in the process.

Of course there are problems: another year of Eichel's prime wasted, a raw deal for Kruger, and can you trust Botterill to sell? Let's be honest: another year of Eichel's prime will probably be wasted either way. Fire Botterill and make Kruger Coach & GM. Give it a try. He's a smart guy with some relevant background. Also, what the hell is there to lose?

So...do nothing.

UFAs I considered (let me know if I missed someone obvious): Brassard, Maroon, Reaves, Larsson, Girgensons, Sheahan, Vesey. I picked the two I expected to be most marketable.

This gives you 6 players to move at the deadline: Johansson, Brassard, Maroon, McCabe, Montour, Hutton (if anyone will take him) - won't miss any of these.

For the long-term RFA signings, adjust term as needed to make the $ work.

You make a post about preparing for the expansion draft and you do nothing to show how we would be affected by the expansion draft.

And, if you try to tank again, 6 years later, the city will be burned to the ground. Its time to win. Its time for the GM to be bold and make moves to make the team better.

If we do the 7/3/1 with the current roster we are talking: Eichel, Reinhart, Skinner, Olofsson, Kahun, Mittlestadt, Larsson, Dahlin, Jokiharju, and one of montour/miller/ristolainen/pilut/mccabe and ullmark.

How many of these guys are you terrified to lose? You wont add a player because you might lose johan larsson or colin miller?

get it together

Players I wouldn't want to lose:

F: Eichel, Reinhart, Skinner, Olofsson, Kahun, Mittlestadt (6)
D: Dahlin, Jokiharju (2)
Goalies: Don't care

You're ignoring something so very, very obvious. Let's see if you can figure it out. LMAO

So what you are saying, even using your standards, we could add a premium forward and defensemen and still not be worse off for the draft?

Yes, but the timing is the key. That's the whole point of this entire suggestion. Do nothing for 2020-2021. Position yourself to have protected spots available for valuable assets you can hopefully fleece from other teams for less than market value before they lose them for nothing in the expansion draft. If you want to flip Reinhart for someone you'd want to protect or young high-upside guys you wouldn't have to rather than paying him, I'm listening to that conversation. Too soon to sell on Mittelstadt but that debate could be had as well. But barring either of those: do nothing. Sacrificing the season (even though the city might burn) looks like it might be the right call.

Those teams will just make deals with Seattle just like they did with Vegas.
